Five Questions Raised by ‘City of Lost Souls’ Book Trailer

The countdown to the highly-anticipated release of City of Lost Souls has dipped below the three week mark and after the trailer debuted on EW.com on Wednesday there are more questions than ever about what lies in store for the characters.

After watching the trailer a dozen or so times (but hey, who’s counting?) here are some of the many questions the trailer raised:

1. What is Sebastian’s Plan for Jace?

That’s a major question that fans have been wondering since the City of Fallen Angels cliffhanger last April. It looked originally that Sebastian had a plan for Jace, but after watching that trailer it looks as if he’s using Jace to get to Clary. Surely Sebastian must have a plan for Jace, as well, but it looks like Clary is the object of his attention.

2. What are Sebastian’s Intentions with Clary?

When Sebastian says, “I have a sister and I will teach her to love me,” it was a line that struck a cord with the fandom. Cassandra Clare recently pointed out that Sebastian’s intentions are supposed to be uncertain at this point. She also insisted that incest, which played a role in the first three installments, is a recurring theme in the series. So perhaps Sebastian’s intention to make his sister love him may not be in the familial way.

3. What Happens When Sebastian Comes Face-to-Face with Jocelyn?

Who could forget this teaser: “Well, hello there, Mother,” Sebastian said in a voice like silk. “Surprised to see me?”. We all know how Sebastian feels about his mother, “I had a mother, but she is dead to me,” he said in the trailer. This face-to-face meeting is a scene that is sure to be deadly terrifying.

4. What Happens to Clary and Jace?

Certainly everyone is wondering what lies in store for Clary and Jace. City of Lost Souls introduces a Jace that fans nor Clary is used to. No doubt their relationship will tested in this next installment and we have to wonder that if Jace goes too far if Clary would be able to still stand by him?

5. How Will the Events in ‘Lost Souls’ Set Up ‘Heavenly Fire?’

We know Sebastian’s plan is to “burn down the world,” but with one book remaining certainly that plan will go into full effect in the series’ conclusion in City of Heavenly Fire. With a cliffhanger surely on the horizon, what will go down in City of Lost Souls to set up what is sure to be an emotionally gripping City of Heavenly Fire?

  1. HOLY CRAP. THIS IS INTENSE.

  2. I’m very excited about reading, The City of Lost Souls. The trailer was very dark and very exciting. The events shown in the trailer, gave me the impression, that The Mortal Instrument series we know and love, is going to change in a very dark way. I see loss coming again for our beloved Shadowhunters, and this truly saddens me. But after being apart of Clary’s journey of self discovery into the world of Shadowhunters, I couldn’t bear to leave her. I really want to see Clary become, who she was truly meant to be. Into every light a bit of darkness must fall.

  3. TeamEdwardJace says:

I loved the trailer it was dark and intense and it mad me even more excited. I want to see jace and clary and everyone come through and sebasitan to fall. though he’s a a really well written villian and hot but still. but very interesting article. here are some possible insights on what I think it might be

1.Sebastian has some sort of devious plan that could potenially threaten other shadowhunters, downworlder and the rest of the human world and perhaps destry so that is no longer what is. Sebastian is using Jace to help him as Jace plus he’s evil so it may also amuse him

    2. Sebastian may feel he needs Clary to keep Jace under his control(as Jace under his influence not still loves her), plus he does have care about(in a familia way or maybe not) so by teaching her to love him, he keeps Jace and hets gets Clary

    3. between sebastian and jocelayn, there is going to be something big

    4. Jace and clary are going to still hav their romantic moments as well as ones that are snesual and romantic but there are still gonna be some issues.

    5. sebstian will still likely be around even if Jace is freed

    • TeamEdwardJace says:

ffor number 2 i meant to say whether jace is infuenced or not, his feelings for clary havne’t hcanged

  4. why do i have this bad feeling that in CoHF everyone is going to die???
    don’t hate me!

  5. mina blak says:

Well, since Cassie said on Twitter that in the new series TDA everyone is suffering from some form of PTSD after the events that take place towards the end of TMI series, I can only assume that Sebastian’s plans come to full fruition in CoHF.
And even if all of our beloved characters survive – which I’m dreading won’t be the case, their world will be irrevocably affected by whatever Sebastian has in store.

  6. Of course Sebastion wants Clary to love him romantially rather than just as family. We’ve had two major clues.

    His one quote:
“There are no other relatives. You and I, we are the last. The last of the Morgensterns. You are the only one left whose blood runs in my veins, too. You are my last chance.”

And his new one in the traier
“I have a sister and I will teach her to love me”

So, I have a feeling he’s going to try to get Clary to love him to create more
Morgenstern. (gross) But, it’s a possibility.

    • I agree with you. I’m thinking the same thing…hes part demon he wouldn’t care that Clary’s his sister… and he must be jealous of jace I kind of feel bad for sebation I think he wants to feel loved…
