We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
Week 35: Hugin attacks Clary
Alyssa, TMI Source: This is a scene that I’m looking forward to seeing play out on screen. It’s a moment where the audience (minus the readers, of course) probably believes the movie is nearing its end, but they will be taken aback by the revelation with Hodge, as well as Hugin attacking Clary. So much goes down in this scene–from Hodge’s betrayal to the attack to Valentine’s appearance to Jace’s kidnapping–there will no doubt be a lot of superb acting talent in this one scene that leave the audience on edge of their seats.
Amber, TMI Institute: The scene where Hugin attacks Clary is important because it unfolds the true deception of Hodge. I believe this scene will be included with Hugin’s attack being CGI. The dastardly bird will fly into Clary, clawing and grabbing the Mortal Cup to give it Hodge. For fans of the book, it’s a moment of shock and disappointment. I am hoping fans will enjoy seeing Jared Harris deliver what I expect to be a genius performance as Hodge!
Natalie, TMI Examiner: The scene where Hugin attacks Clary delivers a very crucial twist in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” This is when we learn about Hodge’s (Jared Harris) grand deception. I was most thrilled with the casting of Jared Harris in this role. He is an exceptional actor that I feel will most accurately deliver Clare’s intended complexities of Hodge’s character to the big screen. It will be interesting to see how director Harald Zwart brings this scene to life. During production when Clare couldn’t share actual character pictures she got creative by sharing pictures of various actors hands. In one shot she shared an image of Hugin but it is unclear if this character will be played by an actual bird or a CGI image. My hope and guess is both.
Tita, TMI News en Español: Hugin is a character that from the beginning freaked me out. He’s always looking suspiciously to everybody and you never know what he’s going to do next. In chapter 19th get to know a lot of things: Hodge is a traitor, is working with Valentine, and Hugin is such a despicable animal, because when Hodge says “Hugin” to him, he directly knows he has to attach Clary and get the mortal cup for him in order to continue with his master’s plan.
This chapter is…. illuminating, evil, and sad for the reader, and I really hope we’ll be able to see this part of the book in the movie.
