Cassandra Clare shares snippet from the ‘City of Bones’ Collector’s Edition

New CoB cover

Repackaged editions of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices will be published in less than a week (September 1) and to celebrate, Cassandra Clare shared something very special: a snippet from Jace’s POV in the City of Bones Collector’s Edition.

The special edition of City of Bones is the only repackage that’s hardcover.

It is only available through Barnes and Noble. Unless people decide to sell it on Ebay, it will never be available anywhere else.

All the repackages have maps of New York (TMI) or London (TID) and forwards by me talking a bit about why I wrote each series. Only the B&N edition is 1) in hardcover 2) a book that contains the opening scene from City of Bones from Jace’s viewpoint.

It’s called “Awake”, from this quote: It was like he was always half-awake where other people were concerned. And then we met you, and he woke up. — Isabelle to Clary, City of Glass

A snippet:

Jace glanced over at Alec and Isabelle. Killing a demon in front of a mundane, unless there was an immediate threat, was something of a no-no. Mundanes weren’t supposed to know about demons.  For one of the first times in his life, Jace found himself at a loss. They couldn’t leave the girl with the Eidolon; it would kill her. If they left the Eidolon alone, it would escape, and kill someone else. If they stayed and killed it, they’d be exposed.

“Knock her out,” Alec muttered, under his breath. “Just … whack her on the head with something.”

“Just go,” Jace said to the girl. “Get out of here, if you know what’s good for you.”

But she only planted her feet harder. He could see the look in her eyes, like exclamation points: No! No!

“I’m not going anywhere,” she said. “If I do, you’ll kill him.”

Jace had to admit that was true. “What do you care?” He pointed at the demon with his knife. “That’s not a person, little girl. It may look like a person and talk like a person and bleed like a person. But it’s a monster.”

“Jace!” Isabelle’s eyes flashed. They were depthless, black, angry. Isabelle never got angrier than when Jace risked getting himself in trouble or danger. And he was risking both, now. Breaking the Law — talking about Shadowhunter business with mundanes — and what was worse, he was liking it. Something about this girl, her stormcloud of red hair and her snapping green eyes, made him feel as if his veins were filled with gunpowder and she was a match.

As if, if she touched him, he’d burn up. But then, he loved explosions.

Aw, the Clace feels! :-)

The Collector’s Edition is only $16.24 right now and international shipping is almost $13.

Which editions will you be buying?

Happy release day to ‘Bitter of Tongue’

Today the seventh installment of Tales from the Shadowhunter AcademyBitter of Tongue – is available in ebook format! It was co-written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan and here is the official synopsis:

When an Academy mission goes wrong, Simon is kidnapped by faeries (why is he always kidnapped?). He must escape the Fey, relying on his only ally, former Shadowhunter and Dark Artifices character Mark Blackthorn.

To celebrate its release, Cassie shared a snippet on her tumblr:

“Just tell me if Aline is helping with the younger ones,” said Mark, his voice growing sharper. “Helen cannot do it all by herself, and Julian will not be able to help her!” His voice softened again. “Julian,” he said. “Jules. My artist, my dreamer. Hold him up to the light and he would shine a dozen different colors. All he cares about is his art and his Emma. He will try to help Helen, of course, but he is still so young. They are so young and so easily lost. I know what I am saying, Shadowhunter. In the land under the hill we know to prey on the tender and new-hearted. And they never grow old, with us. They never have the chance.”

“Oh, Mark Blackthorn, what are they doing to you?” Simon whispered.

He could not keep the pity out of his voice, and he saw it sting Mark: the slow flush that rose to his thin cheeks, and the way he lifted his chin, holding his head high.

He said: “Nothing I cannot bear.”

Simon was silent. He did not remember everything, but he remembered how much he had been changed. People could bear so much, but Simon did not know how much of the original you was left when the world had twisted you into a whole different shape.

Due to the time difference between the States and Europe, I’ve already read Bitter of Tongue and I can strongly recommend this ebook. Like it’s predecessor Pale Kings and Princes, it focuses on the Blackthorns and you cannot help but feel even more heartbroken for the whole family once you’ve read this ebook.

Happy reading, Shadowhunters!

The next ebook – The Fiery Trial – will be released on September 15.

You don’t actually need an iPad, Kindle or Nook to read Bitter of Tongue. If you have an Amazon account, you can download the free Kindle Reading Apps for smartphones, computers or tablets.

Amazon US/Amazon UK/Amazon Germany/Amazon Canada/Amazon France/Amazon Spain/Amazon Italy/Amazon Australia/Amazon Brasil/Amazon India/Amazon Japan/Amazon China

When all the ebooks are published, the book will be released in print format (just like the Bane Chronicles).

If you aren’t a fan of ebooks, but love audiobooks then you can listen to Reign‘s Torrance Coombs narrate the Bitter of Tongue audiobook.

Cover Reveal: Entertainment Weekly shares 7th and 8th cover of ‘Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy’

TSFA-FB-Coverphoto

It’s less than a week until the seventh installment of Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy will be released in ebook format so Entertainment Weekly has shared the cover and official synopsis for Bitter of Tongue.

When an Academy mission goes wrong, Simon is kidnapped by faeries (why is he always kidnapped?). He must escape the Fey, relying on his only ally, former Shadowhunter and Dark Artifices character Mark Blackthorn.

EW also revealed the cover and synopsis for The Fiery Trial which is the eighth installment and which will be released on September 15.

Simon and Clary witness the parabatai ceremony of Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn…and discuss their own parabatai plans in this precursor to The Dark Artifices.

I cannot wait to read the next installments and I am already looking forward to the last two covers – we will finally see Simon’s face :-)

Will is being a loving dad in new ‘The Last Hours’ snippet

Art by Cassandra Jean

It’s Cassandra Clare’s birthday and since she received a lot of birthday wishes, Cassie took to her tumblr to say ‘thank you’:

Thank you all for the lovely birthday tweets and messages; I’m overwhelmed! I’m spending the day with my family but you all will be in my thoughts and long-distance hugs.

A birthday snippet from The Last Hours: Will being such a dad. :)

“Matthew told me what happened at the park,” Will muttered in a voice no one but James could hear. James shot a betrayed look at Matthew, who shrugged and gave him a half-smile. Matthew could be relied on to tattle on James if he thought it was for his own good. “Thank the Angel for Matthew and Thomas and Christopher.” He touched James’ face. “I regret ever having said that your generation was wasting its time with parties and boating and dancing. All I wish for you is to be able to amuse yourself in a pointless fashion during peace and never, ever be in danger.”

Happy birthday, Cassie, and thank you for such a lovely snippet ♥

If you want to wish Cassie a happy birthday you can tweet her @cassieclare or send a fanmail if you follow her on tumblr.

Cassandra Clare shares mysterious lines from ‘The Dark Artifices’ and ‘The Last Hours’

TDA

The Last Hours

After already treating her fans to a new Lady Midnight snippet, Cassandra Clare took to her twitter to share two very short snippets from Lady Midnight and Chain of Thorns. Have a look:

I love how mysterious Jesse Blackthorn’s snippet sounds and I cannot wait to find out more about him!

Here is a very short synopsis for The Last Hours:

The Shadowhunters enter the Downton Abbey era in The Last Hours. Will Herondale is head of the London Institute, where he lives with his wife Tessa. But now it’s their children, James and Lucie, who take center stage, alongside their parabatai, Matthew Fairchild and Cordelia Carstairs. Begin their adventures in Chain of Thorns.

UPDATE

Cassie shared another The Last Hours snippet on twitter:

Lady Midnight will be published on March 8, 2016 and Chain of Thorns is expected to be released in 2017.

Shadowhunter Weekend Day 2: Cassandra Clare at YALC + a worldwide giveaway

YALC

It is the second day of our Shadowhunter Weekend recap and today we will tell you what happened at Cassandra Clare’s event at the Young Adult Literature Convention on July 18. This talk was once again moderated by Sarah Rees Brennan and like the Q & A the day before, it was over way too soon.

Due to YALC’s policy we were not allowed to film the talk, but we have still managed to sum up Cassie’s answers.

Cassie first talked about Lady Midnight and gave a short overview of the most important details: first book in her The Dark Artifices series, it is set in her hometown Los Angeles and it takes place five years after the events of City of Heavenly Fire.
She addressed the challenges of writing Lady Midnight because it is a huge book and it is the first real mystery she has written, clues have to be collected and the characters almost act like detectives. The structure of the book is very different and caused her to bang her head on a table. Weaving all the different Blackthorns and their personalities together was definitely a challenge and since the characters from The Mortal Instruments will also “check in”, Cassie needed to figure out what they are like as adults and what is going on in their lives (“There is at least one engagement”).
Emma was a lot of fun to write since she has known from the start that she is a Shadowhunter whereas Clary and Tessa did not know anything about the Shadow World. Emma is a badass, she trains constantly, she loves her weapons and “she is a little bit of a girl Jace”.
Her parabatai Julian is completely different, much calmer and focused on his family. “It was interesting to write a bit of a gender-flip about what people tend to expect from men and expect from women.”

Cassie then talked about The Last Hours, the sequel to The Infernal Devices, and its main characters which live in London. “It takes place around 1903 which is an awesome time period in history and I’ve been having a lot of fun researching it.”
Most of the parents in these books are a little questionable – dead, evil or missing. Except for Will and Tessa who are great parents.

Since Cassie came straight from the set of the Shadowhunters TV show, she told the audience about watching the filming, meeting the actors and talking about their characters. She also had dinner with the cast and had “a really lovely time”.
For Cassie it is “interesting to have a show after having a movie, because they’re such different formats. Also because we already had a cast that played these parts and that I really loved … It was interesting to get used to a whole new cast … They are approaching the characters in different ways” since the characters in the show are written differently.
While on set she was shown a sizzle reel, “highlights from the stuff they’ve already filmed”, and she also saw some funny dailies. One was Dominic Sherwood in Pandemonium and he kept holding his sword wrong so they had to do it again, which also ended up wrong so Dom swore a lot.

Cassie revealed that she developed a crush on Valentine while she was on set.

She also watched Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus film a scene and she described him as graceful. Since a lot of fans want Magnus to dance on Shadowhunters, they talked about it and Harry said “maybe”.

After the TV show talk, Cassie talked about the different layers of the world she made up. At first there were vampires and warlocks, but then Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters were also added and the already established world got even bigger.
Cassie always wanted to add more to it and to created more magic so the Praetor Lupus, the Council were introduced. The reopening of the Shadowhunter Academy also changed a lot of things and “by the time that we get to The Dark Artifices, they have also reopened this school called the Scholomance which is up in the mountains and trains really elite Shadowhunters called Centurions.”
Adding new layers to the world was a lot of fun since you do not want to stay with the old stuff.
Sarah Rees Brennan also teased that we will see one of the specially trained Centurions in The Dark Artifices.

After twenty minutes fans were then able to ask some really great questions.

One fan wanted to know which Shadowhunter bloodline Cassie would want to belong to. First she wanted to pick the Fairchilds because of the red hair and freckles, but then she decided on the Blackthorns since they are such a big and close family and as an only child, having so many siblings is appealing to her.

Another fan asked for Cassie’s favourite type of Downworlder and her favourite quality about them: warlocks because she would like to live forever. She would not want to be a vampire because they have to drink blood which is disgusting and they also cannot go out during the day. “Warlocks seem to have it pretty great.”
Sarah prefers vampires and she would just drink Jace or Clary’s blood – “I’d drink Jace like a smoothie” – so that she could walk in the sunlight.

Jace gets to know Tessa and gets told stories of what has happened in the Herondale manor.

Jem is always interested in what Emma is doing and checks up on her because she is a Carstairs.

Cassandra and Sarah also talked about collaborating on The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowunter Academy. They live far away from each other so they write “over the computer”. Cassie, Sarah, Maureen Johnson and Robin Wasserman all sat down together to plan out Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. They picked the stories based on favourite characters and themes. When it is time for the individual stories, the collaborator sends an outline, a rough draft gets written and someone else will edit everything “until we get a combined version of a story.”
Cassie’s collaboration with Holly is very different compared to this since they write Magisterium together in the same room, but do not have a planned outline. They take turns writing and editing the other’s paragraphs.

Cassandra’s author friends sometimes help her with certain scenes by playing them out.

(Sarah Rees Brennan was Magnus and Cassie’s husband Joshua was Henry)

Jem would be sympathetic, but wouldn’t get her off the island; Will would just sunbathe; Jace would be practical and build a raft, but he would annoy Cassie so that’s another reason why she picked Magnus.

Another fan wanted to know about forbidden love in Cassie’s new books and she teased that there is definitely forbidden love in The Dark Artifices and some in The Last Hours.
She likes to write about all types of love; Magnus and Alec because they are so different or Simon and Isabelle since Simon first likes her and then it is turned around. The power balance that goes back and forth is interesting. Gideon and Sophie’s love was not forbidden but it was about crossing class barriers for love.

The idea of what you could do if you were not afraid sounds great. The fearless rune does not only make you not afraid in battle, but also not afraid in life in general. Anyone gets held back by fear and therefore does not do something they would want to do and the rune would enable them to follow through.

In her penultimate answer Cassie talked about the differences and difficulties of novels and short stories. “With a short story you have to convey a lot in a much smaller space”. In a novel you obviously have more space, but you also have to pay attention to the pace and remember all the story lines.

The last question dealt with different point of views and whether switching between the characters and chapters is hard. Cassie enjoys multiple point of views, jumping from one head into the next, but they can be hard because you have to keep track of everything that is happening and match up all the times (Hell – Idris – New York).

Cassandra’s second London event ended with another signing where over 300 fans got their books signed.

Saturday was another fabulous day with Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan and I am already looking forward to meeting them again. I also cannot thank them and my friends from British Nephilim and Dutch Nephilim enough for an absolutely incredible time in London. Having fellow Shadowhunters as friends is the best. ♥

And now for the giveaway:

One fan has the chance to win the Lady Midnight chapter sampler and postcards of the new UK TMI covers and another fan can win the postcards.

Emma is angry in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

TDA

At the beginning of the month Cassandra Clare shared a mysterious and steamy Lady Midnight snippet and today she has taken to her tumblr to share a very sweet snippet of Emma, Julian and Tavy:

“I’m here,” he said, and went over to pick up Tavvy. Tavvy put his head down on Jules’ shoulder, looking sleepy, and getting paint all over Jules’ t-shirt. But Jules didn’t seem to care. He put his chin down in his younger brother’s curls and smiled at Emma.

“Forget it,” he said. “I’m going to take this one off to bed. You should probably get some sleep, too.”

But Emma’s veins were buzzing with a sharp elixir of anger and protectiveness. She could almost taste it in her mouth. No one hurt Julian. No one. Not even his much-missed, much-loved brother.

“I will,” she said. “I’ve got something to do, first.”

Julian’s blue-green eyes narrowed. “Emma, don’t try to —”

But she was already gone.

I love Emma and Julian’s relationship and how protective they are of each other!

Lady Midnight, the first book from her new trilogy, will be published on March 8, 2016.

Happy release day to ‘Pale Kings and Princes’

Today the sixth installment of Tales from the Shadowhunter AcademyPale Kings and Princes – is available in ebook format! It was co-written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman and here is the official synopsis:

As a former vampire, Simon’s always been sympathetic to Downworlders. But after a training exercise goes wrong, he gets a glimpse into the Shadowhunters’ prejudice as he learns about the origin of Helen and Mark Blackthorn, principle characters in The Dark Artifices.

Due to the time difference between the States and Europe, I’ve already read Pale Kings and Princes and I urge you to buy the ebook. We find out more about Helen and Mark Blackthorn’s mother and Isabelle visits Simon again to go on a date with him. Sizzy shippers will love this ebook!

Happy reading, Shadowhunters!

The next ebook – Bitter of Tongue – will be released on August 18.

You don’t actually need an iPad, Kindle or Nook to read Pale Kings and Princes.

Shadowhunter Weekend Day 1: Cassandra Clare at Waterstones

This past weekend Cassandra Clare was in London to celebrate the release of Walker Books’ reissued The Mortal Instruments editions and to attend Book Trust’s Young Adult Literature Convention. TMI Source was present at both events and although we live tweeted about what Cassie had to say, we obviously were not able to share everything with you – until now!

Casssandra Clare’s first event was at Waterstones Hampstead on Friday (July 17) with Sarah Rees Brennan, co-author of The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, as the moderator and Mìla Fürstová, the designer of the new UK TMI editions. These lovely ladies sat down together to talk about art, feminism, the Shadowhunters TV cast, a Malec wedding and more. You can look at our tweets again in case you missed them, but we have also filmed everything for you. Enjoy :-)

(It is actually the City of Ashes etching plate, mea culpa)

Here is a better look at the plate:

You can find the City of Lost Souls scene Cassie talked about here. Scroll down to “Dirty Sexy Club Scene (cut)” or search for it with Ctrl+F.
The evening was fanastic, everyone was very friendly and the book shop was the perfect venue for Cassie’s talk so thank you so much to Cassie, Míla, Sarah, Waterstones Hampstead and also Sarah from Walker Books for an incredible evening!

Shadowhunters, come back tomorrow for Day 2 of TMI Source’s Shadowhunter Weekend and a worldwide giveaway!

Cassandra Clare shares mysterious and steamy ‘The Dark Artifices’ snippet

TDA Aaand the spoiling continues. ;-) Cassandra Clare took to her tumblr to share a ‘sexy business’ snippet, but see for yourselves:

Do I have to sacrifice my firstborn in order for you to give us a sexy Lady Midnight snippet? Because I don’t want to sacrifice my firstborn but I do want that snippet, Cassie!!!! — emmacordeliacarstairs

The problem with SEXY BUSINESS is that it is spoilery. So since I don’t want any firstborn children turning up on my doorstep I racked my brains for a bit and decided to share a snippet with no names or descriptions. Could be any girl/boy couple, and there are a bunch. There are non girl/boy couples too, but those are dead spoilery.

She clutched at him, at his shoulders, his sides, her fingers digging into his skin, dragging him harder against her. He gasped into her mouth when she reached down to grab his soaking wet shirt and tore it up over his head. Her knees came up to clasp his hips and he shuddered, once, as if he were going to break.

Like Cassie said, there are a couple of girl/boy relationships, but who do you want it to be? Lady Midnight, the first book from her new trilogy, will be published on March 8, 2016.

Cassandra Clare shares character lines from ‘The Last Hours’

TLH spring new

Cassandra Clare was in a generous mood this past week – thanks, Cassie – because she shared lots of Shadowhunter Chronicles related stuff with her fans. She posted character lines from The Dark Artifices, her and Holly Black’s short story Not for humans and a short snippet from The Last Hours. Cassie then ended the week with tweeting a few character lines from the latter:

My favourite line is from Matthew, but the Will & Tessa line has me a bit worried. :-/
