Happy release day to ‘The Lost Herondale’

The Lost Herondale, the second installment of Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, is out today! It was co-written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman and it focuses on Simon’s training at Shadowhunter Academy and Tobias Herondale, one of Will and Jace’s ancestors.

Here’s the official description and a short snippet:

Simon learns about the worst thing a Shadowhunter can do: desert their comrades. In the early 19th century, Tobias Herondale abdandoned his fellow Shadowhunters in the heat of battle and left them to die. His life was forfeit, but Tobias never returned, and the Clave claimed his wife’s life in exchange for Tobias’s. Simon and his fellow students are shocked to learn of this brutality, especially when it is revealed the woman was pregnant. But what if the child survived…could there be a lost Herondale line out in the world today?

“Demons and warlocks can’t help what they are,” Balogh said darkly. “Shadowhunters are held to a higher standard. The deaths of those three men sit squarely on the shoulders of Tobias Herondale. And he would have been punished in kind, had he ever been foolish enough to show his face again. He never did, but debts need repaying. A trial was held in absentia. He was judged guilty, and punishment was carried out.”
“But I thought you said he never came back?” Julie said.

“Indeed. So the punishment was carried out on his wife, in his stead.”

“His pregnant wife?” Marisol said, looking like she was about to be sick.
“Sed lex, dura lex,” Balogh said. The Latin phrase had been hammered into them from the first day at the Academy, and Simon was coming to hate the sound of it—so often was it used as an excuse for acting like monsters.

Balogh steepled his fingers and contemplated the classroom, watching in satisfaction as his message came clear. This was how the Clave treated cowardice on the battlefield; this was justice under the Covenant. “The Law is hard,” Balogh translated for the hushed students. “But it is the Law.”

Due to the time difference between the States and Europe, I’ve already read The Lost Herondale and I urge you to buy the ebook. There is a surprise at the end which you do not want to miss!

Happy reading, Shadowhunters!

The next ebook – The Whitechapel Fiend – will be released on April 21.

Will and Tessa share a sweet moment in ‘The Whitechapel Fiend’ snippet

Art by Cassandra Jean

We really are getting spoilt this week! There are new UK covers for The Mortal Instruments, exciting Shadowhunters TV news, a new Lady Midnight snippet and now Cassandra Clare has posted a short excerpt from The Whitechapel Fiend, the third short story from her co-written Tales from the Shadowunter Academy series.

Awww, right?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Whitechapel Fiend:

Simon learns the truth behind the Jack the Ripper murders―“Jack” was hunted by Will Herondale and his institute of Victorian Shadowhunters.

It was co-written by Cassie and Maureen Johnson and will be released on April 21.

Emma is told about love in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

The Dark Artifices art

Yesterday was a busy day for Shadowhunters! We got really exciting news about Shadowhunters, the Mortal Instruments television show, the new UK covers for The Mortal Instruments were revealed and Cassandra Clare shared another Lady Midnight snippet.

In this snippet Emma Carstairs is told about love and the negative reactions it can generate:

“Let me tell you a truth before you die, Emma,” said the voice. “It is a secret about the Nephilim. They hate love, human love, because they were born of angels. And while God charged his angels to take care of humans, the angels were made first, and they have always hated God’s second creation. That is why Lucifer fell. He was an angel who would not bow to mankind, God’s favored child. Love is the weakness of human beings, and the Angels despise them for it, and the Clave despises it too, and therefore they punish it. Do you know what happens to parabatai who fall in love? Do you know why it’s forbidden?”

I cannot wait to finally find out why romantic parabatai love is forbidden! Only one more year until Lady Midnight is published.

New UK covers for ‘The Mortal Instruments’

It was recently revealed that Simon & Schuster will repackage the covers of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices and USA Today shared the new cover for the paperback edition for City of Bones. It was also announced that the covers for the English The Mortal Instruments paperback editions are going to change and today, on World Book Day, the website FemaleFirst.co.uk revealed the new covers.

In July 2015 Walker Books UK will publish a major re-issue programme of New York Times No.1 bestselling The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare to attract a whole new audience as well as being a collectable for existing fans.

Each of the six titles in the series features gorgeous cover illustrations by Mila Furstova, the artist who created the album artwork for Coldplay’s Ghost Stories. The first book in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Bones, was a major movie release in 2013.

Cassie also posted about the covers and said:

Lots of people asked about the new designs for the covers of TMI in the UK/Australia/NZ/Ireland. Now, these covers aren’t going to replace the existing covers. The existing covers will still be sold. These will be sold also, either in the teen or adult section. They simply give an alternate look.

These are some of my favorite covers I’ve ever had. These are etchings done by artist Mila Fürstová. Within each shape, you can see careful details: Clary and Jace separated on City of Bones, together in City of Heavenly Fire, Alicante in the rose on City of Glass.

Furstova also did the cover for Coldplay’s Ghost Stories, which I love!

These are delicate and ethereal and lovely — very different from other covers I’ve had. I love the range!

You should definitely visit Cassie’s tumblr to see a larger and more HQ version of the covers. The details on the covers are amazing! Simply click on the picture and then click it again to enlarge it!
I love the colours of the new covers and I think that City of Ashes is my favourite.
Furthermore, I was told that

the scans of the artwork don’t quite do them justice, the real pieces are absolutely stunning!

What do you think of the new UK covers and which one do you like best?

Yesterday Cassandra Clare shared that Jack Falahee from ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder will be the narrator of The Lost Herondale and today Cassie posted an excerpt:

“Demons and warlocks can’t help what they are,” Balogh said darkly. “Shadowhunters are held to a higher standard. The deaths of those three men sit squarely on the shoulders of Tobias Herondale. And he would have been punished in kind, had he ever been foolish enough to show his face again. He never did, but debts need repaying. A trial was held in absentia.

The Lost Herondale is the second installment of Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and it will be released on March 17. It is also the first installment which is co-written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

‘How To Get Away With Murder’ star Jack Falahee to narrate ‘The Lost Herondale’

Jack Falahee Jack Falahee attends The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) And InStyle Celebrate The 2015 Golden Globe Award Season - Press Conference at Fig & Olive Melrose Place on November 20, 2014 in West Hollywood, California.

Cassandra Clare just shared the latest narrator for her co-written series Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy.

Jack Falahee, who plays Connor Walsh on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, will narrate the second installment The Lost Herondale.

Continuing in our tradition of Cute Brown-Haired Boys Read You Tales From the Shadowhunter Academy, Jack Falahee has signed on to record the audiobook of THE LOST HERONDALE. Jack stars as Connor Walsh in the show HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER.

Team TFTSA loves Jack and loves Connor and is totally thrilled! We’re also excited for the next two installments, since they’ll likely have British readers. Anyone you want to see particularly? :)

As a huge fan of How To Get Away With Murder we are super excited and can’t wait to listen to the audiobook. Welcome to the Shadowunter family, Jack!

The Lost Herondale will be released on March 17 and is co-written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

Cassandra Clare talks new covers for her ‘Shadowhunters’ novels

Yesterday, USA Today revealed that The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices will be repackaged with new covers and new extra content. Of course this caused a lot of buzz in the Shadowhunter fandom and many questions arose: Will the cover for Lady Midnight look more modern as well? Who will be on the other covers? Who is the designer? and so on.

Cassie answered a lot of these questions on her tumblr and also shared another picture of the new cover for City of Bones. We’ve highlighted the most important information from her post:

City of Bones has a brand new look! USA Today debuted it on their blog earlier today — you can check it out here.

Just to answer a few things I’ve been asked: my publisher has wanted to redesign the covers for a long time, but needed to finish out TMI first. They have for a long time wanted to make the Shadowhunters books overall look more unified (the paperback TID will also be repackaged, and every book will have the “Shadowhunters” type down the side) and also make them look more modern — the first book was designed ten years ago, and book styles change.

These are paperback repackages. The hardback books will retain the original covers.

These repackages will contain some fun new elements like maps of Shadowhunter New York and London.

These covers were designed by Cliff Nielson, who also did all the other Shadowhunters covers. He’s always been a great designer and I’ve always loved his work. I am happy that the new design carries over elements of the old design (Cliff’s work, the light effects, the fonts — even the model for Jace is the same one used on Lost Souls) so that it’s more of an updating that a complete change.

I don’t know how Lady Midnight’s cover will look. That hasn’t been decided yet. It may well be a fusion of the old and the new, as really, they aren’t that different.

I love Jace’s pose in this cover, and the fact that he’s reaching for a tarot card, and that you can see little details like the Morgenstern ring on his hand. The cover is actually a brilliantly bright bronze, which you can’t tell onscreen unfortunately.

Each cover will feature one character. The first three will be Jace, then Clary, then Simon. But this time around you’ll also get to see Alec have his own cover, and Isabelle have hers.

(I have no info about covers being repackaged in any country other than the US/Canada. The UK are working on some very cool “alternate” covers but they won’t replace the old ones, just exist alongside them.)

Hope you like the covers as well!

We talked to Walker Books and they confirmed:

Walker Books UK will be re-issuing the Mortal Instruments series in July with an entirely different cover look. We are set to launch a cover reveal next week.

Cassie also answered more questions on twitter:

Sarah Rees Brennan recently tweeted about Simon’s hotness:

Although she was talking about the cover model for Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy it is possible that he will also be on the cover for City of Glass since Simon & Schuster kept the model for Jace.

That’s everything we know for now. Once Walker Books has revealed the alternate cover for City of Bones, we will post it here and of course we will keep you up to date on the other covers.

New covers for ‘The Mortal Instruments’ and ‘The Infernal Devices’

Simon & Schuster won’t be publishing a new Cassandra Clare book this year, but Shadowhunters all over the world can look forward to new covers for Cassie’s The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices!

USA Today revealed the new cover for City of Bones, which will hit shelves on September 1:

New CoB coverCassandra Clare’s publisher is repackaging all of the bestselling novels in her massively popular Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series. And we at HEA have the first peek at the new cover of City of Bones, which, as you know, was made into a movie in 2013 called The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The new cover of City of Bones arrives on Sept. 1. And bonus: Each repackaged book will have a new map and new exclusive content written by Cassandra.

What a great new cover for City of Bones! Jace looks really cool and I am already so excited to find out what Cassie has written for the re-releases!

Right now we are not sure if Walker Books, Cassie’s publisher in the UK, will also re-release the books, but we will let you know once we have more information!

What do you think of the cover and and which cover are you looking forward to most? Sound off in the comments!

Thanks to our friends over at British Nephilim for the heads up x

Happy release day to ‘Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy’

Last May we had to say goodbye to the gang from Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments but some of them are back now because it’s the release day of Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy!

The first of ten ebooks centered around Simon was written by Cassie and Sarah Rees Brennan and it focuses on Simon’s training at Shadowhunter Academy in Idris with a special guest appearance by one Isabelle Lightwood.

Here’s the official description:

After living as a mundane and a vampire, Simon never thought he would become a Shadowhunter, but today he begins his training at Shadowhunter Academy. Simon Lewis has been many things. A mundane. A vampire. A hero. But Simon can’t remember any of that. His memories of adventures with Clary, Isabelle, and the rest of the New York Shadowhunters were erased by a demon, and now Simon is eager to reclaim that part of himself. But will he ever get back the parts of himself that he lost? Does he even want to?

One day before its release, Cassie shared a final snippet on her tumblr:

“Oh,” Jace said carelessly, as if he hadn’t been waiting out here for the express purpose of seeing Simon off. He looked up, golden gaze casual, then looked away. “You.”

Being too cool for school was Jace’s thing. Simon supposed he must have understood and been fond of it, once.

“Hey, I figured I wasn’t going to get the chance to ask this again. You and me,” Simon said. “We’re pretty tight, aren’t we?”

Jace looked at him for a moment, face very still, and then bounded to his feet and said: “Absolutely. We’re like this.” He crossed two of his fingers together. “Actually, we’re more like this.” He tried to cross them again. “We had a little bit of initial tension, as you may later recall, but that was all cleared up when you came to me and confessed that you were struggling with your feelings of intense jealousy over my—these were your words—stunning good looks and irresistible charm.”

“Did I,” said Simon.

Jace clapped him on the shoulder. “Yeah, buddy. I remember it clearly.”

“Okay, whatever. The thing is … Alec’s always really quiet around me,” Simon said. “Is he just shy, or did I tick him off and I don’t remember it? I wouldn’t like to go away without trying to make things right.”

Jace’s expression took on that peculiar stillness again. “I’m glad you asked me that,” he said finally. “There is something more going on. The girls didn’t want me to tell you, but the truth is—”

Thanks to the time difference between the States and Europe, I’ve already read Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy and I urge you to have tissues ready.

Happy reading, Shadowhunters!

Cover reveal: Entertainment Weekly shares first two covers of ‘Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy’

We are less than a week away from the release of Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy – the first installment in Cassandra Clare’s co-written Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy series – and Entertainment Weekly has shared not one but two covers with us! They also posted an official description which sounds super cool.

Have a look at the cover:

And here is the new description:

After living as a mundane and a vampire, Simon never thought he would become a Shadowhunter, but today he begins his training at Shadowhunter Academy. Simon Lewis has been many things. A mundane. A vampire. A hero. But Simon can’t remember any of that. His memories of adventures with Clary, Isabelle, and the rest of the New York Shadowhunters were erased by a demon, and now Simon is eager to reclaim that part of himself. But will he ever get back the parts of himself that he lost? Does he even want to?

Since Breia Brissey from EW seems to be a Shadowhunter just like us, we were also treated to the cover of The Lost Herondale (March 17):

http://www.ew.com/sites/default/files/i/2015/02/09/shadowhunter-academy-02.jpg

The official description:

Simon learns about the worst thing a Shadowhunter can do: desert their comrades. In the early 19th century, Tobias Herondale abdandoned his fellow Shadowhunters in the heat of battle and left them to die. His life was forfeit, but Tobias never returned, and the Clave claimed his wife’s life in exchange for Tobias’s. Simon and his fellow students are shocked to learn of this brutality, especially when it is revealed the woman was pregnant. But what if the child survived…could there be a lost Herondale line out in the world today?

It looks like the covers of Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy and The Lost Herondale are just two-tenth of the final cover – just like it was the case with The Bane Chronicles. Each cover of the ensuing installments will fit together as puzzle pieces to compete the full cover of Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy.

We are so excited for more Simon and can’t wait to go on this adventure with him and other beloved characters from The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices!

Who else is counting down the days? :-D

Cassandra Clare introduces new ‘The Dark Artifices’ characters

For the past 2.5 years Cassandra Clare has shared lots of exciting information about the characters in her upcoming The Dark Artifices trilogy and today she has introduced her fans to two completely new characters.

Shadowhunters, meet Cameron Ashdown and Johnny Rook:

Can we expect any new artwork soon? — frenchfilmelephant :)

The problem is that Cassandra Jean has mostly been drawing secret or unknown characters from TDA (which has the largest cast of any book I’ve ever written, yikes.)  I can’t post some of them, but here’s a few to wonder about.

Doesn’t Cameron look like a cutie and Johnny like a badass rock star?

Cassie later revealed

Some fans think that Cameron could be Emma’s ginger boyfriend who she is dating at the beginning of Lady Midnight.

Lady Midnight will be released in 2016 so there is a lot more characters to meet and look forward to before then! :-)

Merry Christmas, Shadowhunters!

Merry Christmas, Shadowhunters from your friends at TMI Source!

We hope that you got amazing (Shadowhunter-related) gifts and that you are now having a wonderful and peaceful time with everyone you love.

If you received any Shadowhunter-related gifts or if you do have a Christmas tree that looks like it could be straight from one of the Institutes, share your story or photos below in the comments or share them with us on Twitter!

Since the time before Christmas was really busy, we totally missed two snippets that Cassie posted on her tumblr (ops).

Let’s have a look and happy holidays:

“I don’t know,” Mark said, looking down at his own long pale fingers tangled in the little boy’s brown curls. “He just – Julian left, and Tavvy fell asleep on my lap.”

He sounded amazed, wondering.

“Of course he did,” Cristina said. “He’s your brother. He trusts you.”

“Nobody trusts a Hunter,” Mark said.

- Lady Midnight snippet

Simon could barely believe any of his new memories, but the idea that Isabelle Lightwood had been his girlfriend seemed more unbelievable than the fact vampires were real and Simon had been one.

- Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy snippet

Cassandra Clare shares more deleted scenes from ‘City of Heavenly Fire’

Shadowhunters, are you ready for two more early Christmas treats? Cassandra Clare shared another comic strip scene from City of Heavenly Fire and also a cut scene that features Jonathan Morgenstern/Sebastian Verlac.

In the spirit of the holidays, more deleted and cut things! In this case, the comic Cassandra Jean drew for some editions of City of Heavenly Fire. It’s a scene I sketched out but deleted (there’s nothing written to post, just notes) because it didn’t fit — Magnus sends Emma, Julian and the Blackthorns back through a Portal to Los Angeles. Jace and Clary come to say goodbye. The passing of the torch, to a new group. And some Clace. :)

And here’s the cut scene:

I haven’t got much in the way of substantive cut scenes from City of Heavenly Fire. Most things were rewritten rather than removed. But here’s a bit of Sebastian’s death scene that didn’t make it in.

“We forgive you,” Jocelyn said. She was still crying, in the same soundless terrible way, just as she had every year on Jonathan’s birthday when she had held the box with his initials on it and wept.

“No,” he said. “There’s no forgiveness for what I did. I know where I will burn when I die.”

“Heaven does not forgive, but mothers do,” said Jocelyn. “When you were a baby inside me, I dreamed of everything for you. That you would be handsome and strong and good. That I would sing to you and love you and take care of you.” She gripped his hand tightly. “Maybe not in this world, but in another, I believe that was the truth.”

“Don’t forgive me,” he whispered. “Hate me. Rejoice that I’m dead. After all I have done, the last thing I would wish to bring to you was more grief.”

“Jonathan,” Clary whispered.

His eyes moved toward her. “And sisters,” he said. “Do sisters forgive?”

Aww 😢

All the feels, right? Tell us your thoughts in the comments and check out the unedited Clary and Jace cave scene and the other comic strip scene in case you missed them!
