‘Shadowhunters’ showrunner Ed Decter joins Twitter and shares another Clace photo

Great news, Shadowhunters! Ed Decter, the showrunner of ABC Family’s Shadowhunters has joined Twitter!

Ed’s profile photo is particularly interesting since it shows another ‘Clace’ photo and we kind of see Clary’s outfit:

Admit it, you totally fangirled (again)! :)

Ed’s header photo is also worth a look:

Last week Harry Shum Jr. and Alan Van Sprang were cast as Magnus Bane and Valentine Morgenstern respectively and today the Shadowhunters Facebook page shared videos where Harry and Alan thank the fans for their support.
Have a look at our Magnus (who sports fabulous hair):

And here is our Valentine who also serenaded the fans:

I cannot wait to see Maxim’s video and pictures of the whole cast once they are all together in Toronto!

Shadowhunters will start filming next Monday and it will air on ABC Family early next year.

Due to the time difference between the States and Europe, I’ve already read Nothing but Shadows and I urge you to buy the ebook. The characters from The Last Hours are very loveable and we are reunited with Will Herondale *swoons* and ‘Uncle Jem’.

Happy reading, Shadowhunters!

The next ebook – The Evil We Love – will be released on June 16.

Cassandra Clare writes a ‘Shadowhunters’ FAQ

Shadowhunters banner

ABC Family’s Shadowhunters is scheduled to start filming in eight days so naturally The Mortal Instruments fans all over the world are very excited to see our beloved book series come to the small screen. Today Cassandra Clare published a FAQ on her website and her tumblr to share what she knows about Shadowhunters. Spoiler alert: it is just as much as we know because Cassie sold her rights and has no say in anything!

Shadowhunters Tv faqsy thing

I updated my TV FAQ on my website — long past due for doing that — and then it immediately crashed from traffic, so I thought I’d repost it here. I’ll try to keep my website updated as production goes on.

1) Who is in the cast?

Cast announced so far:

Katherine McNamara…Clary Fray

Dominic Sherwood…Jace Wayland

Alberto Rosende…Simon Lewis

Emeraude Toubia…Isabelle Lightwood

Matthew Daddario…Alec Lightwood

Isaiah Mustafa…Luke Garroway

Alan Van Sprang…Valentine Morgenstern

Harry Shum, Jr… Magnus Bane

2) Who would you like to play Sebastian/Maia/Jocelyn/Raphael/etc? What do you think of this actor I like for Sebastian/Maia/Jocelyn/Raphael/etc?

I feel like the casting team has done a great job so far, and I trust them to cast the future roles. I try not to participate in any kind of fan casting, or giving opinions on actors who have not been cast. If you are really dedicated, you could tweet to ABC Family, or to the casting director on Twitter, with your thoughts. :)

3) Have you met the cast?

No – at the moment we are on different continents. Hopefully I will meet them on set, since they will be filming through October. You can follow them on their Twitters.

4) When will they start filming?

The projected start date for filming is May 25.

5) When will the show air?

The likelihood is that the show will air in early 2016. There’s no specific date set yet, though.

6) Will the show air in other countries than the US and Canada?

Unfortunately,  there’s no way for me to know that. You’re better off looking out for news in your own country.

7) Where’s the best place to get news and information about the show?

Well, TMI Source (www.tmisource.com) is a great resource. ABC Family is also running many of its own social media accounts, which are worth following:

https://www.facebook.com/ShadowhuntersSeries

http://shadowhuntersseries.tumblr.com

http://twitter.com/shadowhunterstv

https://instagram.com/shadowhunterstv/

8) Will Dominic dye his hair blond/Will Kat dye her hair more red/Will Matthew wear contacts?

I have absolutely no idea, and no influence over those kinds of decisions. I’ll probably find out when you do–when they release promo photos.

9) Are you involved with the scripts?

No, I am not involved with the scripts. I don’t know what happens in the show, and the scripts are embargoed, meaning that they are distributed to only a very few people, so that no information will leak.

10) But IMDB has you listed as the co-writer of the first episode!

IMDB is wrong. I am not a co-writer, or a staff writer, or a consultant on this show.

11) Why is Luke a police officer? Why is Simon an accounting student?

Again, I’m sorry, but I don’t know. I’m just not involved in those kinds of decisions. We will just have to wait and see how it plays out.

12) Do you like the cast?

Yes, I like the cast.

13) Do you know anything about who will be cast next?

I sure don’t! I have no idea literally about who is even being considered for other roles. And if I did, I am legally forbidden from saying so anyway. So asking me is sort of a wash.

14) Will the TV show take up where the film ended?

No. It is unrelated to the film. It is not like Buffy — it is a reboot. It begins from the beginning of the first book.

15) Will Raphael/Ragnor/Church be in it?

I don’t know. I only know who was cast, and that those characters will be in it since they cast them.

16) What happened to the cast of the movie? Didn’t you like the cast of the movie? Are you sad that the cast of the movie aren’t playing the roles in the TV show?

The cast of the movie are well and thriving doing other projects. I like them all very much, and consider it a privilege to have met them. The Mortal Instruments movie and the Shadowhunters TV show are two totally different projects made by totally different people, and therefore have different casts, just like they’ll have different sets and different scripts. I’m also a fan of the cast of the TV show, and don’t want to pick favorites as it seems hurtful to both parties.

Thanks for the shout-out, Cassie :-)

Make sure to follow the twitter accounts of ShadowhuntersTV, our executive producer and director of the first episode, McG, the casting directors, Jonathan Clay Harris and Anthony Kraus, and the newly created ShadowhuntersWriters in case you want to tweet them.

Cassandra Clare shares a few lines from ‘Lady Midnight’, ‘The Last Hours’ and ‘Nothing but Shadows’

TDAThe Last HoursTales from the Shadowhunter Academy featured image

Today Cassandra Clare took to Twitter to share a few lines from three of her upcoming books – Lady Midnight, The Last Hours and Nothing but Shadows:

Lady Midnight will be released on March 8, 2016 and Nothing but Shadows in two days (May 19).

New Covers for ‘The Infernal Devices’ Are Unveiled

Yesterday fans of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments were treated to the repackaged covers of books two to six and today it is time to reveal the covers of Cassie’s second Shadowhunter Chronicles series – The Infernal Devices.

Tor.com unveiled the three gorgeous covers which you can see below:

The Infernal Devices Cassandra Clare

The Infernal Devices Cassandra Clare

The Infernal Devices Cassandra Clare

From Russell Gordon, Executive Director of Art, Production, and Design:

The repackaging of Cassandra Clare’s epic Shadowhunter novels has been a rewarding, year-long adventure. Right from the start, when Karen Wojtyla, Justin Chanda, Annie Nybo and I sat down with Cassie to discuss the new direction, I knew it was going to be something truly special. Cassie had a wonderful vision for the new-look: for the characters to be the main focus, to infuse them with a real intensity, and passion, but also keep them a little mysterious. We all wanted to give these new covers as much “heart” as possible. We commissioned the extraordinary Cliff Nielsen (who had worked on the original packaging) as the cover artist. Cliff’s work is not only beautiful in a lyrical way—but it’s edgy and bold and mesmerizing—the perfect match for Cassie’s books. I especially love the details in his work, the way he united a different rune with the featured character on each of the Mortal Instruments covers, and the way the Clockwork Angel is woven into the character on each Infernal Devices cover.

I’ve always thought the best covers were those that will not only draw a new reader in, but also give that reader something else to explore after they’ve finished reading the book; when they go back and pore over all the visual details of the cover they maybe hadn’t understood, or even noticed, before reading the story. There are so many details on every part of the packaging of these books, and I really think it will keep Cassandra Clare’s fans—the new ones and the already-established-ones—engaged long after they’ve closed the books.

From Cliff Neilsen, illustrator:

Creating the cover to a novel is an exciting task. I get to work with really smart people (like Russell Gordon and Karen Wojtyla) that admire beauty and strive for originality. I get a chance to selfishly explore my artistic interests. I get an opportunity to be the first person to investigate and describe visually the world that sprouts from the creative heart of the author.

Cassandra Clare’s stories are special because her heart is special. Her words beautifully interweave the wonder and excitement of youth with myth, cultural history and mysticism. She makes them the popular culture.

So much work went into creating these covers. The process includes combining traditional mixed media painting, digital painting, photography, 3D rendering, found objects, and calligraphy. I’m passionate about these things, but the STORY is the true King. A good illustrator will understand that, above all else. Nevertheless, with this project I found myself asking “What drives the King”? What is the purpose of the story?

Emotion.

Reimagining these covers has been an exercise in trying to capture that emotion through iconography. It has been an attempt to personally connect with these beloved characters and their fictional lives, and share it as a visual parable to the throngs of Cassandra’s fans, past present and future. I hope you experience them with as much wonder and joy as I had creating them.

UPDATE

Cassandra Clare said that

The new paperbacks will come complete with maps of London and a forward by me about writing the trilogy.

and she also shared the spine art:

These new paperbacks will be published on September 1.

Cassandra Clare talks new ‘The Mortal Instruments’ covers

Yesterday the social media pages of Shadowhunters TV revealed the repackaged covers of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments and today Cassie has taken to tumblr to talk about the new covers. Since we’ve already shared the book covers, we’ve only included the spine art which looks incredible!

I love these [covers] — I have great fondness for the old covers, but it was time for a change, and these feel fresh and new to me, cleanly designed, and with each character seeming frozen in a moment of story.

City of Bones: Jace

City of Ashes: Clary

City of Glass: Simon

City of Fallen Angels: Isabelle

City of Lost Souls: Alec

City of Heavenly Fire: Sebastian/Jonathan

At the bottom you can see the spine art — it stretches across the spines of all the books; each has a piece, and when they are placed together, you can see the whole picture.

Any Shadowhunters going to BookCon NYC this year? If so, stop by the S&S booth #2620 @11:00 each day to get your limited-edition poster featuring the new spine art from the TMI repackages coming September 1st!

Cliff Nielsen and Russell Gordon did great jobs, kudos to them!

Stay tuned for the new The Infernal Devices covers which will be revealed later today!

‘Shadowhunters’ to start filming on May 25!

Exciting news, Shadowhunters! After finding our female lead in Kat McNamara, executive producer McG has just tweeted when Shadowhunters will start principal photography:

That’s less than 3 weeks. I’m so thrilled that everything is working out and that the fandom is getting a second chance to see our beloved book series on the small screen.

Filming will take place in Toronto.

Shadowhunters is scheduled to air early next year on ABC Family.

Cassandra Clare shares a new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet and talks about ARCs

TDA

We’ve got a release date – March 8, 2016 in case you haven’t heard – and now we have a brandnew snippet for Cassandra Clare’s Lady Midnight, the first book in her new The Dark Artifices trilogy! In this new snippet Cristina thinks about Diego Rosales and their relationship when they were younger:

Not since she’d left home had Cristina so clearly and painfully remembered what they had been to each other when they were younger. How much she had loved Diego. Her heart had felt torn to pieces when he cried out for his brother, pleading with him. Jaime, Jaime, ayúdame. Help me. And then he had cried out for her, and that was worse. Cristina, no me dejes. Regresa.

Cristina, don’t leave me. Come back. I love you.

I’m here, she’d told him. Not gone. She remembered him asking if there was someone else …

Well, this is certainly something for the Cristina x Diego shippers and makes us really curious what happened between these two – especially when you also read this previous snippet.

Furthermore, Cassie answered a question about Lady Midnight ARCs (Advanced Reading Copies):

They’ll be available in October. There are going to be very few, and there will be no e-copies on things like Edelweiss and Netgalley. But there will be physical ones, and there will be giveaway contests, etc, that I’ll keep you up to date with.

As soon as we know more about ARCs we will let you know!

Catch up with all the snippets from The Dark Artifices here.

Cassandra Clare reacts to the Simon and Isabelle casting announcements

IMG_2757

Yesterday was an exciting day for the Shadowhunter Chronicles fans because the actors who will be playing Isabelle Lightwood and Simon Lewis in ABC Family’s Shadowhunters were announced. Emeraude Toubia is our Isabelle and Alberto Rosende is portraying our Simon.

Reactions to their castings were mixed, to put it mildly, so Cassandra Clare took to her social media pages to let fans know her thoughts.

Cassie also tweeted Emeraude and Alberto:

From her tumblr:

I’ve seen their auditions. They were both terrific. Emeraude is beautiful and sweet and tough. Alberto is charming and nerdy and adorkable.

[…]

I kind of can’t believe how gorgeous everyone in this cast is! And they’re also sweet and enthusiastic. We are a lucky bunch, Shadowhunters. :)

Finally Cassandra wrote another tumblr post where she addressed the racism that had floated around on tumblr and twitter:

maggzee said: People are making racist remarks about the Hispanic actors portraying Simon and Isabelle in the TV series. How do you feel about the casting?

I am really happy about the casting.

I said this on twitter and I will say it here. The producers and network did approach me about how I would feel about “colorblind” casting — casting the best actors and actresses they could find, regardless of race. There were some actors and actresses of color that they were especially excited about looking into and they wanted to know if that would be an issue.

I said it wasn’t an issue for me. That I supported the idea, they’d have my unconditional backing, I would love to see diversity in the cast. That while the characters who are characters of color in the book (Magnus, Maia, Raphael) must remain as characters of color, and be cast that way, I had no such feelings about characters who were white or white-assumed.

There are a lot of white people on our movie and television screens, and in our books. You can find white people everywhere. They are overrepresented, not underrepresented. So while it is very important that, for instance, Maia be cast with a black actress because the fact that she is black is a significant part of her character, affecting the way she sees the world and is reacted to by a racist society (she talks about the difficulty of finding black dolls as a child, about growing up biracial in a conservative town), the idea that Isabelle is white is not a significant part of her character. (Many have argued that she is not necessarily white. I don’t want to undermine that idea since I never specified. Never thought about it — which is a function of my own privilege and something I’m working on.)

The actress cast for Izzy is fierce and fabulous. If she can represent for Latina and Hispanic girls, all the better. The actor cast for Simon is adorable. If he can represent for Latino and Hispanic boys, terrific. Many have asked if this affects Simon being Jewish: it does not. He is still Jewish. There are plenty of brown-skinned Jews. Quite a bit of my own family, in fact.

I don’t know how this will affect the casting of Alec. I hope they will pick the best actor, and they have shown this does not necessarily mean a white actor. I also do not know whether S&I will be Latin* in the show, whether that will be written in as part of their characters. I simply don’t know.

If you have a problem with POC being cast in these roles, well, you’ll have to take it up elsewhere. I am for it. I told the network that my fandom would be supportive; that they were diverse and awesome. I want you to live up to my description of you. Most of you already are. I believe the rest of you will.

There you have it. Let us show Cassie, the network and most importantly Emeraude and Alberto how supportive we really can be! Both are excited to be a part of Shadowhunters – check out their videos so let us try and be excited with them :)

Please keep comments respectful. All hateful comments will be deleted.

Emeraude Toubia aka Isabelle sends kisses to the fans

After Dominic Sherwood (Jace) and Alberto Rosende (Simon) Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle) has also filmed a video for all the fans out there:

Emeraude’s hair looks just like I’ve always pictured Isabelle’s hair and she seems very sweet!

The TMI Source ladies are so excited and we think that …

Alberto Rosende says hi to the fans

Two and a half hours after announcing that Alberto Rosende will be playing our favourite mundie Simon Lewis, @ShadowhuntersTV has tweeted a lovely video message from our new Simon:

I love his enthusiasm and the glasses!

Fingers crossed that we’ll also get a video from Emeraude AKA Isabelle. :-)

Keep comments respectful. All hateful comments will be deleted.

Dominic Sherwood thanks the fans for their support

DominicOur Jace has spoken! Dominic Sherwood, who will play our beloved Jace Wayland/Morgenstern/Lightwood/Herondale, in ABC Family’s Shadowhunters has filmed a short video to thank all the fans for their support.

A few hours before casting director Jonathan Clay Harris tweeted a quote from City of Ashes and it makes us wonder if they are casting Jocelyn Fray right now.

Tweet @ShadowhuntersTV and @TMI_Source to show your excitement for the TV series and let’s hope that there’ll be more casting news soon!
