Julian watches Mark in new ‘The Dark Artifices’ snippet

Yesterday Cassandra Clare took to her tumblr to share another The Dark Artifices snippet. The following paragraph could be from Lady Midnight or Lord of Shadows, which is set to be released in April 2017:

Far below them the world spun by, a patchwork of summer-gold fields, green hills, and luminous, winding rivers of blue and green. It was beautiful, but Julian could not take his eyes off his brother. So this is the Wild Hunt, he thought. This freedom, this expanse, this ferocity of joy. For the first time, he understood how and why Mark’s choice to stay with his family might not be an easy one. For the first time he thought in wonder of how much his brother must love him after all, to consider giving up the sky for his sake.

A little while ago Cassie also tweeted a link to a short snippet on her TDA Pinterest board:

I’m so excited to learn more about Mark, Julian and all the other characters :-)

Lady Midnight will be published in 29 days (March 8)!

Morena Baccarin from ‘Gotham’ to narrate ‘Lady Midnight’

Audio book news! Gotham actress Morena Baccarin will narrate of the Lady Midnight audio book.

Here’s what Happy Ever After also revealed:

Word has it that the narrating has already begun, and we can’t wait to hear the finished product.

Here’s a bit more about Morena (courtesy of Simon & Schuster Audio):

Morena Baccarin is known for portraying Inara Serra in the series Firefly and the follow-up film Serenity, Adria in the series Stargate SG-1 and the follow-up film Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Anna in the 2009 version of the series V, and Jessica Brody in the Showtime series Homeland (for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2013). She plays the role of Dr. Leslie Thompkins in the Fox television series Gotham.

About Lady Midnight:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip.

The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

Welcome to the Shadowhunter Chronicles family, Morena! Other audio book narrators include Ed Westwick, Daniel Sharman, Molly C. Quinn and Sophie Turner.

Lady Midnight will be published on March 8.

Cassandra Clare talks ‘Lady Midnight’ and ‘Shadowhunters’ with Publishers Weekly

cassie clare headshotCassandra Clare is busy writing the second book of her The Dark Artifices trilogy – Lord of Shadows – and the next book in her Magisterium series with Holly Black, but she found the time to answer four questions that Publishers Weekly had for her.

You always have some cool contest or giveaway for your readers when you release a new book. What are you planning for Lady Midnight?

Well, I really wanted to be able to sign the entire first run of Lady Midnight but then they told me how many books that would be (at least 600,000) and I realized no human being could do that. I’m aware of what signing 150,000 copies [of The Fault in Our Stars] did to John Green. So I remembered that when Suzanne Collins hurt her wrist and couldn’t autograph any copies of Mockingjay, she had a special stamp made that she used during her tour but then retired, never to be used again. So I asked if we could create some kind of unique stamp and I would stamp as many books as I could, which still turned out to be less than they were going to actually print. So we drafted a bunch of people with connections to the book – the designer, the editor, the president of Simon and Schuster – and we had stamping parties to get it done. So if you get a stamped book, it was done by me or by somebody very close to the production of the book.

All this and a TV show, too! Freeform [formerly ABC Family] just launched Shadowhunters, its own series based on the books. Did you get to have any input?

I’m actually not involved at all. I mean, I did visit the set but I am as clueless as the next person as to what will happen next. Well, I do know a little, but I wasn’t involved in writing it and I didn’t have right of approval or get a consultant fee or anything like that. But, of course, all my readers always come to me with questions about it. That’s the thing about having a close relationship with your fans: they think to ask me first even though the TV series is really a completely separate thing that doesn’t have anything to do with me or the books. I think that will change. I think fans of Pretty Little Liars have finally separated the books from the show. [The show] is a riff on my work, not my work. A lot of people want to know, ‘Why aren’t you involved?’ and the real answer is, if I insisted on being involved, nobody would have bought the rights to make it. That’s just not the way these things work except in very special circumstances. And I’m okay with that.

You can read the whole interview here.

Lady Midnight will be published on March 8 and if you preorder now, you will get a stamped book with other cool extras.

Win one of three ‘Lady Midnight’ Advanced Reader Copies

LM ARC

From Cassandra Clare’s Instagram

At the beginning of the week Cassandra Clare unpacked the gorgeous Lady Midnight box which contained an ARC of the book, a map and other cool stuff. She announced that she would be giving away three of these ARC boxes and today she shared what fans have to do to win one ARC:

I have three ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) of Lady Midnight to give away, in their beautiful boxes with their amazing artwork, maps, and cool additions! You can see the video of the ARC here.

Here’s how you enter the contest:

Take a picture of yourself holding a copy of any Shadowhunter book you already own.
(Foreign editions are totally fine. Ereaders are OK as long as there’s a visible image of the front cover on the screen.)

Try to make your the picture creative. For example, you could take the picture in an interesting location, include elements of what you love about the books, or wear a costume. (You don’t have to go anywhere elaborate to do this: one girl won a contest like this for taking a picture in a bathtub full of spaghetti!)

Post it to social media: tumblr, twitter, instagram. Whatever your favorite platform is.

Then email the link to that post to ladymidnightcontest@gmail.com before February 7th. DO NOT EMAIL THE PICTURE. EMAIL THE LINK TO THE POST.

Winners will be contacted shortly after the contest ends.

This contest is open to readers all over the world, ages 13 and up. One entry per person.

How amazing and generous is this contest? Fans from all over the world can enter and I hope that Cassie will share the most creative pictures after the winners have been picked.

Cassie also tweeted about the contest and established two more rules:

Good luck, Shadowhunters and please make sure to follow Cassie’s rules :-)

For all the US fans out there, Goodreads is giving away 20 Lady Midnight ARC – you can enter here. We don’t know whether they are giving away an ARC or the box with an ARC, but it’s still a great opportunity for all the fans in the USA.

Lady Midnight will be released on March 8!

Livvy, Ty and Mark talk about syphilis in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

The Dark Artifices

Interesting title, huh? Cassandra Clare shared a new Lady Midnight snippet and it features Livia, Mark and Tiberius Blackthorn as well as a mundie girl:

Livvy made an exasperated noise, stomped forward, and seized Mark by the back of the shirt. “You don’t want him,” she said to the pink-haired girl. “He has syphilis.”

The girl goggled. “Syphilis?”

“Five percent of people in America have it,” said Ty, helpfully.

“I do not have syphilis,” Mark said in a fury. “There are no sexually transmitted diseases in Faerieland!”

The mundane girls fell instantly silent.

By the Angel, I’d really like to know why they are talking about STDs.

Lady Midnight will be published on March 8 and you can still preorder your special edition from Waterstones who have worldwide shipping!

Preorder an exclusive Waterstones hardcover of ‘Lady Midnight’

Cordelia, Lucie and Matthew drive in a carriage in new ‘The Last Hours’ snippet

TLH spring newIt’s been a while since Cassandra Clare has shared a snippet from her second new trilogy, The Last Hours, but today she took to her tumblr to publish a snippet that features the parabatai pair Lucie and Cordelia as well as Matthew:

Cordelia clutched Lucie’s hand as they jolted through the streets in the Carstairs’ carriage, surrounded by the blurred traffic of omnibuses, motorcars, and pedestrians. Advertisements whirled past. THE HORSESHOE HOTEL. THREE GUINEA STOUT. NEW PALACE STEAMERS. Signs advertising tailors and fishmongers, hair tonic and cheap printing.

Matthew, sitting across from them on the upholstered carriage seat, was muttering and swearing to himself, his hair sticking out madly.

“Hidebound,” he muttered. “Weasels.”

“What?” said Lucie.

“I think he said hidebound weasels,” said Cordelia. “But who do you mean, Matthew? Are you angry at us?”

Matthew flung himself sideways so his long legs were pulled up on the bench seat in front of him, and his profile was presented to Lucie and Cordelia. It was a fine profile: he was much more delicate-featured than his brother, who had a broad, strong face. Matthew had a face that looked as if it had been meant to be painted on china.

“Of course not,” he said. “It’s just appalling how they all treat James.” He glanced at Cordelia, and then at Lucie. “She knows, doesn’t she?”

The Last Hours does not have a release date yet, but it is likely that it will be published after the second book of Cassie’s The Dark Artifices trilogy.

You can check out all the previously released snippets here or have a look at Cassie’s TLH Pinterest page.

Fantastic news, Shadowhunters fans!

According to Deadline, Netflix has acquired the GLOBAL rights to Shadowhunters!

Netflix has acquired global rights, excluding the U.S., to Constantin Film’s The Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. The streaming giant will premiere the title as an original series globally on Netflix a day after the U.S. broadcast on Freeform (fka ABC Family), with the first episode launching globally January 13. Subsequent episodes will release weekly thereafter.

Shadowhunters is the TV adaptation spinoff of the bestselling book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The book was previously the basis for the 2013 feature The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, directed by Harald Zwart and starring Lily Collins. The TV series follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who discovers on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – humans born with angelic blood who protect humanity from demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped by a powerful foe from her past, Clary is thrown into a new life of demon hunting under the guidance of charming and headstrong Shadowhunter Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood). Now living in the Shadow World among warlocks, vampires, werewolves and faeries, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

Kudos to Constantin Film for understanding that the love for Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series is a world-wide phenomenon!

The countries in red have Netflix so this is where the Shadowhunters episodes will be aired one day after the US release:

Shadowhunters premieres Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 9/8c on Freeform and on Netflix on Wednesday, 13 for all the international fans :-)

Have yourself a Merry Shadowhunter Christmas/holidays with limited edition art and more!

December

Art by Cassandra Jean

It’s 20 days until Christmas/the holidays and if you still don’t know what to give to your parabatai, your sibling or your own personal Jace or Clary, we have once again come up with a Shadowhunter Christmas gift list for you.

The first item on this list is something very, very special!

The English editions of Cassie’s The Mortal Instruments were reissued with new and gorgeous covers by the artist Mìla Fürstová and fans now have the unique opportunity to buy Mìla’s designs. Every single one of the etchings (an etching is an ancient type of printmaking technique where the artist scratches onto metal and then prints from that) is signed by Mìla and Cassie herself! These limited edition etchings are 45 x 45 cm (~ 18 in x 18 in) and if you order before December 11 your present will arrive just in time for Christmas.

We were told that “Cassandra owns these works herself and is about to hang them in her house, so whoever buys these works will have a very limited edition etching the same as Cassandra has in her home!”

Cassie was asked about the most interesting fan reaction to the new covers and she said that “many readers outside the UK have asked if the same artwork would be used for future repackages in the US and around the world. They want a piece of the beauty, too!”

Mìla’s favourite cover is “the star because of the complexity of the structure” and she said “I found the cover with the Wings [City of Bones] most difficult to make. I wanted to get the relationship between Clary and Jace just right and kept re-drawing this image.”

Check out/buy the etchings here.

Emma watches Mark in new ‘The Dark Artifices’ snippet

The Dark ArtificesLooks like Cassandra Clare fans are getting spoilt today. Cassie just shared a The Dark Artifices snippet on her tumblr and we just cannot wait for this series! :-)

Julian had stepped away from them and was on the phone again, speaking in a low voice. Mark splashed up out of the water and jammed his wet feet into his boots. Neither he nor Cristina was glamoured, and Emma noticed the stares of mundane passers-by as he came toward her — because he was tall, and beautiful, and because he had eyes that shone brighter than the lights of the ferris wheel. And because one of his eyes was blue, and the other one was gold.

And because there was something about him, something indefinably strange, a trace of the wildness of Faerie that never failed to make Emma think of untrammeled, wide-open spaces, of freedom and lawlessness. I am a lost boy, his eyes seemed to say. Find me.

Cassie later confirmed that Mark, Emma and Co. are at the Santa Monica Pier:

Lady Midnight, book one of The Dark Artifices, will be published on March 8, 2016.

Who do you ship with Emma, Julian or Mark? Sound off in the comments!

Cassandra Clare updates fans on ‘The Last Hours’ and shares a new snippet

TLH spring new

While the publication of Cassandra Clare’s Lady Midnight is getting closer and closer, 110 days left, Cassie’s other new trilogy The Last Hours does not have a release date yet, but she addressed this issue in a recent tumblr post:

The first book of TLH isn’t scheduled. It is most likely, unless something weird happens, to come out after the second book of TDA. It is likely to go like this:

2016 TDA 1
2017 TDA 2
? TLH 1
? TDA 3

Etc. But none of this is set in stone, and I feel very squirrelly about even suggesting dates and order, because they are not final. In the past, when I’ve said a date was tentative and it was then moved, as tentative dates are, people have asked in droves why the book was pushed back.

I totally get that: when you’re looking forward to something, it’s nice to have a specific date you can know when you’ll get it. And I’m grateful people are looking forward to these! Part of the reason, though, that I asked — so this is on me — my publisher not to set release dates yet was to give myself a little creative freedom. To figure out the right order of publication for the story I want to tell, and not to be constantly panicked about deadlines. (Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean I am not writing. I am a workaholic. I write 20/24.) To be able to preserve my health a bit and provide a cushion in case unexpected stuff happens (like traveling to New York to meet a contest winner!)

I don’t know what’s up with Goodreads, but like IMDB, before a book comes out, I am not sure I would entirely trust the information provided. For instance the official site of my publisher, http://shadowhunters.com/ , says TLH 1 is coming in 2017. And it might. But I can tell you it sure isn’t coming in 2016!

I know it sucks to wait. It sucks for me, too. Every time I write a scene I like with Mark, or a funny line for Anna, I want you guys to see it. But ultimately I want you to see the polished form, the best I can make it. And that does take some time.

Looks like we have to be patient and see what Cassie’s publisher will decide!

To make us even more excited for The Last Hours, Cassie shared a short snippet about Lucie Herondale:

He really did have a most arresting face, Lucie thought. She firmly believed it was all right to stare at people when you were a writer. Writers needed to gather material. That was all there was to it.

Who do you think Lucie is watching and what series are you looking forward to more? Sound off in the comments below!
