Cassandra Clare shares mysterious lines from ‘The Dark Artifices’ and ‘The Last Hours’

TDA

The Last Hours

After already treating her fans to a new Lady Midnight snippet, Cassandra Clare took to her twitter to share two very short snippets from Lady Midnight and Chain of Thorns. Have a look:

I love how mysterious Jesse Blackthorn’s snippet sounds and I cannot wait to find out more about him!

Here is a very short synopsis for The Last Hours:

The Shadowhunters enter the Downton Abbey era in The Last Hours. Will Herondale is head of the London Institute, where he lives with his wife Tessa. But now it’s their children, James and Lucie, who take center stage, alongside their parabatai, Matthew Fairchild and Cordelia Carstairs. Begin their adventures in Chain of Thorns.

UPDATE

Cassie shared another The Last Hours snippet on twitter:

Lady Midnight will be published on March 8, 2016 and Chain of Thorns is expected to be released in 2017.

Shadowhunter Weekend Day 2: Cassandra Clare at YALC + a worldwide giveaway

YALC

It is the second day of our Shadowhunter Weekend recap and today we will tell you what happened at Cassandra Clare’s event at the Young Adult Literature Convention on July 18. This talk was once again moderated by Sarah Rees Brennan and like the Q & A the day before, it was over way too soon.

Due to YALC’s policy we were not allowed to film the talk, but we have still managed to sum up Cassie’s answers.

Cassie first talked about Lady Midnight and gave a short overview of the most important details: first book in her The Dark Artifices series, it is set in her hometown Los Angeles and it takes place five years after the events of City of Heavenly Fire.
She addressed the challenges of writing Lady Midnight because it is a huge book and it is the first real mystery she has written, clues have to be collected and the characters almost act like detectives. The structure of the book is very different and caused her to bang her head on a table. Weaving all the different Blackthorns and their personalities together was definitely a challenge and since the characters from The Mortal Instruments will also “check in”, Cassie needed to figure out what they are like as adults and what is going on in their lives (“There is at least one engagement”).
Emma was a lot of fun to write since she has known from the start that she is a Shadowhunter whereas Clary and Tessa did not know anything about the Shadow World. Emma is a badass, she trains constantly, she loves her weapons and “she is a little bit of a girl Jace”.
Her parabatai Julian is completely different, much calmer and focused on his family. “It was interesting to write a bit of a gender-flip about what people tend to expect from men and expect from women.”

Cassie then talked about The Last Hours, the sequel to The Infernal Devices, and its main characters which live in London. “It takes place around 1903 which is an awesome time period in history and I’ve been having a lot of fun researching it.”
Most of the parents in these books are a little questionable – dead, evil or missing. Except for Will and Tessa who are great parents.

Since Cassie came straight from the set of the Shadowhunters TV show, she told the audience about watching the filming, meeting the actors and talking about their characters. She also had dinner with the cast and had “a really lovely time”.
For Cassie it is “interesting to have a show after having a movie, because they’re such different formats. Also because we already had a cast that played these parts and that I really loved … It was interesting to get used to a whole new cast … They are approaching the characters in different ways” since the characters in the show are written differently.
While on set she was shown a sizzle reel, “highlights from the stuff they’ve already filmed”, and she also saw some funny dailies. One was Dominic Sherwood in Pandemonium and he kept holding his sword wrong so they had to do it again, which also ended up wrong so Dom swore a lot.

Cassie revealed that she developed a crush on Valentine while she was on set.

She also watched Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus film a scene and she described him as graceful. Since a lot of fans want Magnus to dance on Shadowhunters, they talked about it and Harry said “maybe”.

After the TV show talk, Cassie talked about the different layers of the world she made up. At first there were vampires and warlocks, but then Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters were also added and the already established world got even bigger.
Cassie always wanted to add more to it and to created more magic so the Praetor Lupus, the Council were introduced. The reopening of the Shadowhunter Academy also changed a lot of things and “by the time that we get to The Dark Artifices, they have also reopened this school called the Scholomance which is up in the mountains and trains really elite Shadowhunters called Centurions.”
Adding new layers to the world was a lot of fun since you do not want to stay with the old stuff.
Sarah Rees Brennan also teased that we will see one of the specially trained Centurions in The Dark Artifices.

After twenty minutes fans were then able to ask some really great questions.

One fan wanted to know which Shadowhunter bloodline Cassie would want to belong to. First she wanted to pick the Fairchilds because of the red hair and freckles, but then she decided on the Blackthorns since they are such a big and close family and as an only child, having so many siblings is appealing to her.

Another fan asked for Cassie’s favourite type of Downworlder and her favourite quality about them: warlocks because she would like to live forever. She would not want to be a vampire because they have to drink blood which is disgusting and they also cannot go out during the day. “Warlocks seem to have it pretty great.”
Sarah prefers vampires and she would just drink Jace or Clary’s blood – “I’d drink Jace like a smoothie” – so that she could walk in the sunlight.

Jace gets to know Tessa and gets told stories of what has happened in the Herondale manor.

Jem is always interested in what Emma is doing and checks up on her because she is a Carstairs.

Cassandra and Sarah also talked about collaborating on The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowunter Academy. They live far away from each other so they write “over the computer”. Cassie, Sarah, Maureen Johnson and Robin Wasserman all sat down together to plan out Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. They picked the stories based on favourite characters and themes. When it is time for the individual stories, the collaborator sends an outline, a rough draft gets written and someone else will edit everything “until we get a combined version of a story.”
Cassie’s collaboration with Holly is very different compared to this since they write Magisterium together in the same room, but do not have a planned outline. They take turns writing and editing the other’s paragraphs.

Cassandra’s author friends sometimes help her with certain scenes by playing them out.

(Sarah Rees Brennan was Magnus and Cassie’s husband Joshua was Henry)

Jem would be sympathetic, but wouldn’t get her off the island; Will would just sunbathe; Jace would be practical and build a raft, but he would annoy Cassie so that’s another reason why she picked Magnus.

Another fan wanted to know about forbidden love in Cassie’s new books and she teased that there is definitely forbidden love in The Dark Artifices and some in The Last Hours.
She likes to write about all types of love; Magnus and Alec because they are so different or Simon and Isabelle since Simon first likes her and then it is turned around. The power balance that goes back and forth is interesting. Gideon and Sophie’s love was not forbidden but it was about crossing class barriers for love.

The idea of what you could do if you were not afraid sounds great. The fearless rune does not only make you not afraid in battle, but also not afraid in life in general. Anyone gets held back by fear and therefore does not do something they would want to do and the rune would enable them to follow through.

In her penultimate answer Cassie talked about the differences and difficulties of novels and short stories. “With a short story you have to convey a lot in a much smaller space”. In a novel you obviously have more space, but you also have to pay attention to the pace and remember all the story lines.

The last question dealt with different point of views and whether switching between the characters and chapters is hard. Cassie enjoys multiple point of views, jumping from one head into the next, but they can be hard because you have to keep track of everything that is happening and match up all the times (Hell – Idris – New York).

Cassandra’s second London event ended with another signing where over 300 fans got their books signed.

Saturday was another fabulous day with Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan and I am already looking forward to meeting them again. I also cannot thank them and my friends from British Nephilim and Dutch Nephilim enough for an absolutely incredible time in London. Having fellow Shadowhunters as friends is the best. ♥

And now for the giveaway:

One fan has the chance to win the Lady Midnight chapter sampler and postcards of the new UK TMI covers and another fan can win the postcards.

Fill out the Rafflecopter form (tweet and follow) and leave a comment and your name on either this post or day one of the Shadowhunter Weekend recap – we will check.

Emma is angry in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

TDA

At the beginning of the month Cassandra Clare shared a mysterious and steamy Lady Midnight snippet and today she has taken to her tumblr to share a very sweet snippet of Emma, Julian and Tavy:

“I’m here,” he said, and went over to pick up Tavvy. Tavvy put his head down on Jules’ shoulder, looking sleepy, and getting paint all over Jules’ t-shirt. But Jules didn’t seem to care. He put his chin down in his younger brother’s curls and smiled at Emma.

“Forget it,” he said. “I’m going to take this one off to bed. You should probably get some sleep, too.”

But Emma’s veins were buzzing with a sharp elixir of anger and protectiveness. She could almost taste it in her mouth. No one hurt Julian. No one. Not even his much-missed, much-loved brother.

“I will,” she said. “I’ve got something to do, first.”

Julian’s blue-green eyes narrowed. “Emma, don’t try to —”

But she was already gone.

I love Emma and Julian’s relationship and how protective they are of each other!

Lady Midnight, the first book from her new trilogy, will be published on March 8, 2016.

Cassandra Clare shares mysterious and steamy ‘The Dark Artifices’ snippet

TDA Aaand the spoiling continues. ;-) Cassandra Clare took to her tumblr to share a ‘sexy business’ snippet, but see for yourselves:

Do I have to sacrifice my firstborn in order for you to give us a sexy Lady Midnight snippet? Because I don’t want to sacrifice my firstborn but I do want that snippet, Cassie!!!! — emmacordeliacarstairs

The problem with SEXY BUSINESS is that it is spoilery. So since I don’t want any firstborn children turning up on my doorstep I racked my brains for a bit and decided to share a snippet with no names or descriptions. Could be any girl/boy couple, and there are a bunch. There are non girl/boy couples too, but those are dead spoilery.

She clutched at him, at his shoulders, his sides, her fingers digging into his skin, dragging him harder against her. He gasped into her mouth when she reached down to grab his soaking wet shirt and tore it up over his head. Her knees came up to clasp his hips and he shuddered, once, as if he were going to break.

Like Cassie said, there are a couple of girl/boy relationships, but who do you want it to be? Lady Midnight, the first book from her new trilogy, will be published on March 8, 2016.

James asks Cordelia for a dance in new ‘The Last Hours’ snippet

TLH spring new

While we are still waiting for a release date or release year for the first book in Cassandra Clare’s The Last Hours trilogy, Cassie has shared another unspoilery snippet on tumblr:

James and Matthew separated, Matthew to dance with Lucie, and James to speak to his parents. Cordelia saw them glance over toward her and looked away quickly; still, she was not at all surprised when James appeared a moment later in front of her, flashing a smile at his aunt and uncle.

“Miss Carstairs,” he said, with a slight bow in Cordelia’s direction. “Would you favor me with this dance?”

“It’s a waltz,” said Cordelia’s mother, before Cordelia could speak. “My daughter does not know how to waltz.”

Cordelia bit her lip. She certainly knew how to dance: her mother had engaged an expert instructor to teach her the quadrille and the lancer, the stately minuet and the cotilion. But the waltz was a seductive dance, one where you could feel your partner’s body against yours, scandalous when it had first become popular.

She very much wanted to waltz with James.

This could be right before snippet #5 on our The Last Hours snippets page!

Right now the publishing schedule for The Dark Artifices and The Last Hours seems to look like this:

Cassandra Clare shares a new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet and talks about ARCs

TDA

We’ve got a release date – March 8, 2016 in case you haven’t heard – and now we have a brandnew snippet for Cassandra Clare’s Lady Midnight, the first book in her new The Dark Artifices trilogy! In this new snippet Cristina thinks about Diego Rosales and their relationship when they were younger:

Not since she’d left home had Cristina so clearly and painfully remembered what they had been to each other when they were younger. How much she had loved Diego. Her heart had felt torn to pieces when he cried out for his brother, pleading with him. Jaime, Jaime, ayúdame. Help me. And then he had cried out for her, and that was worse. Cristina, no me dejes. Regresa.

Cristina, don’t leave me. Come back. I love you.

I’m here, she’d told him. Not gone. She remembered him asking if there was someone else …

Well, this is certainly something for the Cristina x Diego shippers and makes us really curious what happened between these two – especially when you also read this previous snippet.

Furthermore, Cassie answered a question about Lady Midnight ARCs (Advanced Reading Copies):

They’ll be available in October. There are going to be very few, and there will be no e-copies on things like Edelweiss and Netgalley. But there will be physical ones, and there will be giveaway contests, etc, that I’ll keep you up to date with.

As soon as we know more about ARCs we will let you know!

Who’s excited?! :-)

‘Perfect’ Diego Rosales is discussed in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

If everything goes according to plan we now have less than a year until Lady Midnight, the first book in Cassandra Clare’s The Dark Artifices trilogy, is released! Today Cassie shared a snippet in which there is some serious girl talk:

“Perfect Diego is the boy Cristina’s mother wants her to marry,” Emma told Livvy. Now it was Cristina’s turn to look betrayed. “It’s not an arranged marriage, not exactly, it’s just that her mother loves him, he’s a Rosales —“

“He’s related to you?” Livvy asked Cristina. “Isn’t that a problem? I mean, I know Clary Fairchild and Jace Herondale are a famous love story, but they weren’t actually brother and sister. Otherwise I think it would probably be a …”

“Less famous love story,” said Emma, with a grin.

Cristina waved her hand dissmisively. “The Rosaleses are a huge Shadowhunting family. I don’t think he’s even a cousin. My mother just thinks it would help cement the Rosales empire. She thinks he’s perfect, so handsome, so smart, such a Shadowhunter, perfect perfect perfect —”

“And now you know how he got his nickname,” said Emma.

I can’t wait to find out more about the Rosaleses!

Lady Midnight will be released in March 2016.

Emma is told about love in new ‘Lady Midnight’ snippet

The Dark Artifices art

Yesterday was a busy day for Shadowhunters! We got really exciting news about Shadowhunters, the Mortal Instruments television show, the new UK covers for The Mortal Instruments were revealed and Cassandra Clare shared another Lady Midnight snippet.

In this snippet Emma Carstairs is told about love and the negative reactions it can generate:

“Let me tell you a truth before you die, Emma,” said the voice. “It is a secret about the Nephilim. They hate love, human love, because they were born of angels. And while God charged his angels to take care of humans, the angels were made first, and they have always hated God’s second creation. That is why Lucifer fell. He was an angel who would not bow to mankind, God’s favored child. Love is the weakness of human beings, and the Angels despise them for it, and the Clave despises it too, and therefore they punish it. Do you know what happens to parabatai who fall in love? Do you know why it’s forbidden?”

I cannot wait to finally find out why romantic parabatai love is forbidden! Only one more year until Lady Midnight is published.

Cassandra Clare introduces new ‘The Dark Artifices’ characters

For the past 2.5 years Cassandra Clare has shared lots of exciting information about the characters in her upcoming The Dark Artifices trilogy and today she has introduced her fans to two completely new characters.

Shadowhunters, meet Cameron Ashdown and Johnny Rook:

Can we expect any new artwork soon? — frenchfilmelephant :)

The problem is that Cassandra Jean has mostly been drawing secret or unknown characters from TDA (which has the largest cast of any book I’ve ever written, yikes.)  I can’t post some of them, but here’s a few to wonder about.

Doesn’t Cameron look like a cutie and Johnny like a badass rock star?

Cassie later revealed

Some fans think that Cameron could be Emma’s ginger boyfriend who she is dating at the beginning of Lady Midnight.

Lady Midnight will be released in 2016 so there is a lot more characters to meet and look forward to before then! :-)
