Benjamin Stone says ‘Mortal Instruments’ “would have been a great opportunity”

Benjamin Stone read for the role of Jace Wayland.

Prior to the announcement that Jamie Campbell Bower would be taking on the role of Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments, there was a lot of speculation as to who would land the role.

One of the actors that was rumored to have read for the part was The Nine Lives of Chloe King star Benjamin Stone, who quickly became a fan-favorite after this tweet.

Stone chatted with We Love Soaps to talk about his show Nine Lives, as well as future acting gigs, and he revealed that he would have loved to be a part of  The Mortal Instruments:

Could you picture yourself in a type of live action role in the future? If so, what character would it be?

Benjamin Stone: You know, I definitely could. They’re filming a lot of young adult fantasy novel-type films now. One of the ones I could have seen myself doing but they had already cast it, was Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments. It was funny, because again reading that was actually like when I read Nine Lives. It had very familiar characters in it as well and I immediately felt really good about it. It didn’t work out in the end, but that would have been a great opportunity.

  1. Oh well, I guess he never saw the casting call? He would have been a good choice too. But I’ve fully accepted the idea of Jamie being Jace and so it’s full steam ahead. I just wish we had more development. Camelot has not been picked up for a second season so what’s the hold up? Why hasn’t Simon been casted yet?

  2. Why would you tell us about this news now? It’s kind of a downer because he would have made a great Jace. However, it’s too late now & i guess we just have to have faith in Jamie. 🙂

  3. Well that’s a relief (regarding the active casting that is ongoing)! I was starting to think that they liked torturing us with these long gaps between each casting LOL. My faith that a movie was actually going to be made this year was starting to waiver a little. We really need some news ASAP.

As for having faith in Jamie, I don’t think we need to worry. I believe he will convince us all in the end that he was the perfect choice.

    • I had a feeling that we’d have to wait a bit for Simon (not 5 months like for Jace though) but after we have Simon the rest should come quickly if filming is set to begin in October or November.

Saundra Coller (who played Izzy in the CoFA boom trailer) said that auditons for Izzy began back in early June and that she’s going out for the role. So casting for other characters is quite active, as well.

  4. I have complete faith in Jaime. He’s a great actor (I being a Harry Potter and semi-twilight fan) Though I would have much prefered Benjamin Stone or Alex Pettyfer(mostly Alex!), I still think Jaime’s great. As for the Clary role, being played by Lily Collins, i’m completely let down. She looks like a 12 year old, and I don’t like her that much as an actress. As for Valentine, I seriously want the principal from Easy A to play him! I couldn’t picture anyone more perfect. Lol i’m very opionated.

    • That’s how I feel about Jamie as well ;). I probably would have preferred Ben or Alex based solely on looks but I’m not sure if they would have been able to pull it off acting-wise.

As for Clary, in CoB she’s 15 going on 16 but Lily’s 22 years old. So if you think she looks 12, that’s actually a good thing LOL. Acting wise, I’ve only seen her in The Blind Side and her role wasn’t big so I can’t say how she’s going to be. But I have faith that’s she’s going to pull it off nicely.

  5. Yeah, see. I think Alex could. I’m not sure about Ben. I’ve only seen him in the Nine Lives of Chloe King. But I think Alex would be perfect. If you’ve seen some of his movies, like Beastly, he makes a really good cocky jerk that you just want to smack, much like Jace. But he can also be sensitive and sweet. He’s quite talented with that. But for Lilly, I just don’t have much of an appeal to her as an actress. I would’ve much more preferred Alexz Johnson or someone like that. I’m scared Lilly won’t be awesome like Clary. Also, for the movies, I hope they don’t screw it up and make it nothing like the books. I hate it when they do that!

    • I understand your concerns about Lily. Like I said, I haven’t seen her in anything except Blind Side. But from the clips of Priest I saw, I think she embodied Clary a little bit. I could be totally wrong but I hope not.

Like you, I want the movie to be as faithful to the book as they can. And from what Cassie and others have said, the script is very faithful to the book. Will the actors be faithful to their book counterpart? I guess we will have to see.

I know that for Twilight, the script was somewhat similar but different than the book as well as Kristen and Rob’s interpretation. Did it ruin the movie? Having read the books before seeing the movie (as will be the case for most TMI readers), I don’t think it did. So I guess we will have to wait and see about the CoB movie.

If it bombs, we won’t get any sequels but hopefully, they can all pull it off and give us 6 movies in total ;).

  6. See, i’m not that big of a Twilight fan. I’m definately not a Twihard. But I am a Potterhead. I feel like the twilight books weren’t good enough to ruin in the first place. But I hope they stay faithful to the books like the Harry Potter movies have these past 10 years. If they do, they probably won’t make it as big as Harry Potter, considering how large of an industry it is, but it should definately go above and beyond Twilight. It’s an amazing series.

Okay… I am 100% supportive of Jamie, but am I the only one who watches Nine Lives of Chloe King and everytime I see this guy I’m reminded of Jace? XD Hahaha their characters have a very similar cocky-awesome attitude. Lol just thought I had to mention that. It makes me think that if Jamie beat out this guy, he has GOT to be a kick-ass Jace 🙂 So excited.

  8. @Shadowhunter Gal :)- I think the exact same thing! They’re both cocky and arrogant, they’re both these demon-butt-kickin hotties, and both are practically desperately in love with the main girls. His character Alek is soo much like Jace. I think about it every time I watch the show!

Lol it is a seriously terrible habit, but I do think of Jace everytime I watch it… Maybe that’s why I love him so much, hahaha. ❤

  9. I’m the exact same way 😛 And he is soo cute! Seeing him play Alek as amazingly as he does makes me believe he’d be a perfect Jace 😀 “I will love you until the very end, and if there’s a life after that, I will love you then.” ❤

  10. “I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there’s a life after that, I will love you then.” hehe sorry had to correct myself ^.^ To love is to destroy, and to be the one who is loved, is to be the one destroyed.

  11. 😮 ohmygosh. I could have totally seen Ben as Jace. He’s could at playing the cocky guy who everyone can’t help but love. (; but oh well! Now it’s up to Jamie. 😀
