‘The Mortal Instruments’ returning as a TV series

CityofBones

The Mortal Instruments is continuing. As a television series.

The Hollywood Reporter made the announcement that The Mortal Instruments is returning as a TV series, which is currently in development and set to begin production next year. Ed Decter will act as showrunner.

“It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told THR. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”

There are no broadcast partners yet attached.

Since production is set to begin next year (2015), it sounds like they’ll begin filming on the pilot around March next year and are aiming for a spot on the Fall 2015 TV schedule. More than likely this unfortunately means they will be recasting.

  3. Are they going to start City of Bones all over again?

That’s a good question. The original article doesn’t say anything about that. What do you think they’ll do?

    • They better, the movie was a shitty adaptation. I mean, come on, Clary wasn’t supposed to have the Mortal Cup but she did in the ending. And Valentine’s hair was supposed to be white. And just. Everything was so wrong about the movie, they need to remake the movie into the TV show because it was just plain awful.

      • I agree. It could’ve been done so much better. Now I just hope that they don’t change so much in the show like they did with the Vampire Diaries. Keep it al close to the source material as possible guys!!

      • Agreed The Movie was good for people who didn’t read the book. my friends liked it but the didn’t like the book i read the book and was about 10 seconds from ripping my hair out of my head in frustration. also i really want the cast to stay the same I really liked Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell bower as Jace and Clary. That was something the movie had right was the cast, i thought they did well on casting.

      • Alec Montoito & Kim Jackson // October 13, 2014 at 4:16 AM //

SAME, i agree with you. I mean, if you’re gonna do an adapation and you want it to succeed you better fucking do it right! Let’s just hope this thing of a tv show has green light and this time, they can do it like the book says.

      • Amy Hughes // October 13, 2014 at 9:30 AM //

        I agree!

      • Totally! I mean I disliked Valentine in the movie (and not in the good way), because he wasn’t Valentine at all! WHAT’S WITH THE HAIR? And in the books he’s so calm and convincing psycopath… I the movie he’s just screaming like a little girl… NOT so convincing… I sure hope the TV series will be better… just… ditroiuwrpurtuidimbnlcv! Am I making any sense? 😀

      • clary jackson // October 14, 2014 at 1:37 AM //

i hope the series is really good since the movies almost always skip important details, i thought the cast was ok but i didn’t like Jamie as Jace :/

    • I think they should, the movie left out a lot of things so I think it’s better to start all over again.

    • They really should

  4. Well finally! The only logical way to go. I always wanted it to be a TV series so I’m totally happy with this 🙂

  5. Id watch it
    I’m going to watch it.
    We need a network

  6. Are the same actors returning? And will it start with City of Ashes or go back to City of Bones? Either way I’m really excited!

they have to redo City of Bones. its only logical that they do. they would have to seriously change City of Ashes if they don’t.

I really hope the actors will be the same but I’m so excited either way💞💞💞💞💞💞

    • Yeah I feel like after the movie, it would be weird to have any one else playing the characters. Even if you don’t like the actors, they already know the characters and shouldn’t really be changed.

  12. not liking this. tv shows never follow the source material. secondly, there’s a good chance they’re gonna recast EVERYONE one the show. these all big screen stars, a tv show wont pay these actors the same at the movies would. the silver screen (TV shows) and the big screen (Hollywood movies) are 2 separate entities. tv shows have probably a fraction of a movie’s budget, lower budget means, crappy special effects, props, and even worse script writing. I want this series to succeed. but not as a tv show. honestly just give the mortal instruments over to Peter Jackson and let him work his magic like he did Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

  13. Well I’m not getting my hopes up too high just yet. I mean, look at what happened to Delirium. Anyway, if it turns out, I will be super happy – especially since they can stay a lot truer to the books this way.

    • Don’t forget The Selection. They tried that one TWICE and it still didn’t work out..

Just because a tv show is being developed doesn’t mean it will get picked up by a network. Also, TV shows rarely follow the books they are based on. Just look at The Vampire Diaries. That one is also based on a YA book series and while the show is good, it’s nothing like the books! Another example is True Blood and Witches of East End.

Sorry to be so negatieve but we should try not to get our hopes up too much..

      • I think the success of the series depends on where it ends up. I love what Starz has done with the Outlander series. It has been visually stunning and largely faithful to the book. I would love to see TMI end up on Starz, HBO, or Showtime. But I’m afraid it all end up on CW with Vampire Diaries or on Syfy.

      • I totally understand! They did the same exact thing with pretty little liars, the show is way different then the books! If they actually change them I will get so freaking mad!

  14. I wonder if they will still film it in Canada.

  15. Elizabeth Murray // October 12, 2014 at 4:11 PM // Reply

I would Love Lily Collins to play Clary!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I might watch it as a tv series. I couldn’t watch the movie, it just completely ruined the book for me. I wasn’t happy with the casting, and I just couldn’t warm up to movie Jace at all.

    • Glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t happy with the casting choices for the movie. Everyone else seems to love the cast. However, they did choose a perfect actor for Simon in my opinion.

    • I liked most of the cast but I did NOT like Jamie CB as Jace. It has nothing to do with his looks (even though I still think he’s too plain/skinny looking for Jace) but it’s because of the way he played the role. He was way too serious. Jace has to be snarky and sarcastic not as serious as Jamie played him.

Same with Valentine. Jonathan Rhys Myers, while actually a pretty decent actor, acted nothing like the Valentine in the books. However, I think a big part of that is the way the role was written in the script. They got him completely wrong! Also, the costume. Dreads. Seriously?

Simon was perfect. The others were okay. Lily Collins as Clary was pretty good but part of me thinks that’s because Lily is such a big TMI fan. She had fun playing the role and that showed.

Magnus looked perfect. The acting though…

  17. Nooooooo!! Its needs to be a film:( I LOVE TMI and i loved the film and understood everything they did, and even more the CAST!! they cant change it after weve sern them already come alive! i want to see the series madr and if the cast stayed the same id be okay with this, but if it isnt the same cast i don’t think id be able to watch it:'(

    • Agreed! The same cast is mandatory to have the same impact on the audience !! It just won’t be the same without them

  18. They’d better start wil City of Bones again – if not, what’s the point???

It better stay the same and not turn out like the vampire diaries, ( in comparison to the books) and I’m glad they might recast

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING. I’m so scared they’ll ruin it like with TVD, but I think that if they do it right it could be amazing

  20. I think its a great idea it would be awesome because with a tv series you can go into the story deeper and can do more story line with different characters i am so excited

  21. YAY!!!! So excited!!!!! I think making TMI into a TV series is so much better because there is so much going on-too much to fit in a movie 😀 I’m just worried about the casting….

  22. Noooo, not recasting!!!

  23. Well Game of Thrones certainly hasn’t suffered for being on the silver screen, now has it? This is the smartest thing they could have done! And don’t underestimate the budget. Seriously depends who they work with. HBO definitely has plenty of money. Showtime too. If it goes to traditional network ABC doesn’t short show budgets. As for casting, in order to really do the series credit, they would have to reboot with new cast with COB. Otherwise it would be halfassed reboot. I’m looking forward to more updates on this. Brilliant decisions!

  24. I am actually really sad that they will be recasting

I loved the cast too ! And I don’t want them to change it. I will be very disappointed if they actualy do that. And movie or tv series? It doesn’t matter for me. I just want to see my favourite book come alive and experience Clary’s, Jace, Simon’s, Izzy’s, Alec’s and others adventures, don’t you ?

BY THE ANGEL, FINALLY SOME NEWS. i always said it made sense to do the series as a television show. I just wonder if they are going to recast and what does this mean for Infernal Devices?

  31. irinamaturski // October 12, 2014 at 4:46 PM // Reply

    Yes! Yes! Yes! Brilliant idea!

  32. What they need to do instead of completely redoing the media of the series, is instead redo the film, and include all the much loved parts of the book that they missed out. This way they don’t have to mess around with recasting, and low budgets. If they made the films like they should have done, then everyone would be happy and we, the loving fans, would be happy that we finally had the movie we were waiting for.

If it was made into a tv show, actually getting a hard copy of the episodes would be difficult because you have to watch all the individual episodes in order to watch the whole movie, whereas a film, on a single disc, would be so much easier to handle.

They just need to sort out the movie that they’ve currently got, they don’t even need to re-film the entire thing, just add in the bits that they missed out.

  33. I don’t like it. One what about the fact that they contracted the actors or a three movie deal? I know some ppl didnt like the cast in the movie but what do you think is going to happen when they cast for a tv series? More than likely the only way they’ll get any big name actors is if its on a network like Starz or HBO. And then some fans won’t be able to watch the season until it comes out on DVD, like me. I don’t get those channels. It costs too much. On top of all this, look what they did with shoes like Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries. Fans were upset the movie didnt stick closely to the book they’ll be extremely disappointed with the tv show then. I haven’t seen a tv show yet that’s stayed close to the books. It doesn’t make for good tv. So good luck with this staying close to the books cause I seriously doubt it. PLL and TVD have veered so far from their books that the plots from the books aren’t even in the tv series anymore. I read PLL. Before the series ever came out. You might as well ask what books the show is based on because it sure isnt the PLL book series!! I don’t want this as a tv series but we don’t always get what we want do we?

    • I hope it is bought by one of the premium cable networks. After seeing the Outlander series on Starz and the quality of the production , I hope Tmi doesn’t end up on CW or Syfy

  34. I actually wouldn’t really mind a recast that much. I personally wasn’t to happy about the movie cast. The only movie casting I really liked was for Simon. I do think that it can be a potentially good tv series. There is allot that they left out of the movie that they would be able to add into the TV series. For example they barely even touched onto the impact of the circle in the movie and we barely got to know much about the shadow hunters. ( like parabatai ) I wont get my hopes up about the tv series but I am still excited.

  35. chloe lawrence // October 12, 2014 at 5:00 PM // Reply

Really happy about this. I was worried they wasnt going to make the rest of them. Doing these into a tv series means they wont miss so much out. I enjoyed the film but it missed loads! I kind of hope they recast as well. But doing this means theyll have to do TID as well or when they get to the last book it wont make sense

  36. I really like the idea. But to re-cast? I hope the actors will stay the same or mostly the same.
I liked Godfrey Gao so much as Magnus he was just perfect, dont know if i want to watch it if they do a completely re-cast :/

Sorry for my bad english 😀

  37. They need to keep the same actors and it will be fantastic.

    • Agreed! If they change the actors I’ll feel kind of heartbroken (especially with Jamie Campbell- Bower)!! But if they keep the same cast I’ll be so happy 🙂

      • I think you have to consider the age of the main characters. They are supposed to be teens. As much as I loved Jamie, Lily, Kevin, and Jemima, I think they are too old for the longer life of a tv series. However, I think Godfrey Gao and Aidan Turner will still be perfect for their roles 2 and 3 years down the road.

      • I think if there’s a recast, it will only be partial.

      • Not necessarily. Honestly, the series is so fast-paced, I think they could probably cover the first 3 books in 1 season.

    • Goldshade (thanks Codex) // October 18, 2014 at 12:54 AM // Reply

No to be honest it wouldn’t.

  38. I like this idea better than more films to be honest. I’m a little sad about recasting because I would have liked to see the actors from the movie grow and improve from The City of Bones film. I wasn’t too overly fond of a majority of the cast but I felt like the more I watched, the more I would like them. (Magnus and Simon were my favorites by far and I’m upset to lose them).

I can’t wait to watch at the end of the day. With a TV show, it can go on for a longer period of time. Look at Game of Thrones. Pretty sure that turned out well. The books were amazing and the movie didn’t give as much credit. I hope a longer running TV series will get the series out there.

  39. Reblogged this on IfAnyOneKnew and commented:
Exciting news hmmmm i think i support this idea.

  40. Will I be able to watch this in England???!!!!

    • Don’t worry, the fandom is so vast that they will air it in England. And if they don’t then just hop onto a site called “Glowgaze” where you can watch everything without download or signing up to anything 🙂

  41. That’s exciting news. I just wish they didn’t have to (more than likely) recast. Lily Collins and Jamie Bower were a great Clary and Jace, respectively 😦

  42. THERE IS A GOD!

I’m beyond happy with this choice, because, in my opinion, the movie was an almighty flop because:
    – they totally screwed up the plot. The plot in COB paves the rest of the story. Simon didn’t turn into a rat, there was no Raphael, Jace didn’t truly believe he was Clary’s brother, Hodge didn’t betray anyone. They didn’t go to Renwicks! Simon didn’t kill the greater demon, which in turn, earns him alittle bit of credit. Must I continue…
I understand, that this was a movie and things needed to be cut due to timing restrictions, but some of the most vital plot points were ignored.
    – the script was cringy. Example when Jace says “Remember when I said I’d never seen an angel? Well, I lied.” In fact, a lot of dialogue was unnecessary.
    – the writers decided to try and downplay Valentine’s sadistic side by having his evil henchmen be stupid blonkers, example, “I’m not too crazy about the basement” These villains resemble bad guys from Scooby doo for Christ sake.
    – Some of the casting choices were poor. I won’t say who because I feel like it’s disrespectful to the actors themselves.
Whilst on the topic of character portrayal, I also feel like most of the main characters weren’t presented right, for instance, I feel like Jace was too dark, he had none of his comedic flare from the books. Again, just my opinion.
    – The soundtrack was hideous. In particular having Demi Lovato’s song “Heart by Heart” come surging into the kissing scene out of nowhere ruined the moment. It was alien, the song didn’t BELONG in that scene. That type of song is something that you’d see in a youtube video, not the actual movie.
    – The motorbikes didn’t fly. This made me mad, because the motorbikes are needed to get into the boat in COA.
    – One of Jace’s costumes looked like a skirt. I realise that these last things are alittle pathetic, but they all added up and really ruined the movie in my eyes.

However, in all fairness, the movie did have some good points. The fight sequences were top-notch, the CGI and props were amazing, runes were beautifully done. But these good things are overshadowed by all the bad…

I’m really glad that someone is willing to give Cassie’s material a second-chance as a TV series. Let’s hope they do it justice, and the network producers ANALYSE what went wrong with the movie and FIX it for the series.

    🙂

    • Me and my best friend went to see the movie… We complained to each other about all of those things 😀 I mean the characters were soo different from the books, and I just thought they made the movie too syrupy. In the books Clary and Jace huffed at each other all the time… I really hope the TV series will be better 🙂 sry about my English skills 😀

    • Yes!! I agree with everything you just said, really wish the tv series would be much much better than the movie.

  43. Honestly, this could be good. But I would hate if they recasted. I fell in love with each character and to me lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower were the perfect Jace and Clary, even Cassandra said they were. Hopefully they stay close to the books though.

    OH MY FUCKING GOD
this is going to be great I hope they have the same people from the movie BTA

  45. Unless they get the original cast to come back, I more than likely will not watch. I hate when people get recast. I fell in love with the original actors and actresses.

  46. Only if they bring back everyone from the movie I’ll watch it but if they don’t I’ll be so mad

  47. I agree with Kiki and Pam. We already have the characters pictured in our minds, to go and change everyone now would ruin everything. I want the absolute same actors for all the characters or I’ll won’t even bother watching it. For me there is no other Jace than Jamie. I don’t care who else they would pick. Pretty much the same goes for the rest of the characters.

Doesn’t really matter if they change the cast as long as the script acually follows the books I’m happy. Buffy didn’t have the same cast from the movie. I’m not comparing the two but still.

    • You are not seriously comparing this to Buffy?!

      • lookunderyourbed // October 12, 2014 at 11:21 PM //

I just said I’m not. I’m saying they didn’t have the same cast and it ended up as one of the coolest shows on the air but my knowledge of nerdiness is limited to a few shows so I couldn’t give another example. If you read the last sentance you would know I’m not comparing the two I’m giving an example.

I think this is a great idea! It’s perfect because it’s a way to get the whole story across without worrying about needing to leave stuff out. However I will be very upset if they recast. I loved all of the actors in the city of bones movie. They were and are perfect for th roles, I hope they can figure out a way to keep them.

  51. I don’t like it.
It will mean they’ll recast everyone and the cast was perfect. Especially Magnus. 😦
No way they will be able to keep the cast with the busy schedules of everyone.

    • I really hope they do keep the cast. I mean, the schedules might be open, a lot of them are new actors and Lily and Jamie have a few projects, but they were planning on filming the movie anyways, so maybe they’ll be open to the idea? Plus I think the fan demand on them playing the parts is too big to turn down. I think if they’re going to do this, it has to be with those people.

  52. I’m glad their not giving up on it … and hopefully they recast everyone because the only person who played their part in the movie was Robert Sheehan.

Love the idea. Just hope they keep the original cast.

  55. THRILLED to hear this. I’ve been trying to get an audition for City of Ashes for the past three years (when I first heard about the first movie) and the passion for it still burns in me! I have sent audition videos, got some info from Martin Moszkowicz and Stephanie Corsalini last year about it that wound up going up in smoke but hey, I’m not giving up even if the last door closes. If anyone knows where auditions will be, I’d wholeheartedly appreciate it.

  56. I’ve always wanted any books I’ve liked to be a TV series exactly because they can go more in depth than a movie. I’m just so happy that its actually happening

  57. I am just hoping Lily and Jamie and the rest of the cast will be in it. Because I wouldn’t mind a TV show, I love TV, I just already fell in love with these actors as Jace and Clary and the rest of them. Especially Clary, literally no one else can play Clary it’s not allowed lol. But as long as I get more TMI than I am happy. I’m sure whatever they choose will be right. I actually loved the movie, so ideally, I want more of those, but I know that’s probably not going to happen, so this would be the next best choice, as long as they have the same actors.

  58. Y serán los mismos actores?

  59. I am happy that it’ll be made into a series! It better be a long one, though. And Lily Collins should still definitely play Clary, I can’t picture anyone else playing her!. Also, they should try to get it on Netflix since the series probably won’t be on television in the UK..

  60. Amazing!!! But PLEASE HAVE THE SAM CAST! I cannot imagine anyone else playing these wonderful characters! AND PLEASE DO NOT HAVE JULIE PLEC WRITING! (If you watch the vampire diaries, you’ll know why!)

  61. KEEP THE SAME CAST

  62. I am really excited about this, but at the same time I am very disappointed because they’ll recast. I think the original cast is perfect and flawless. It should stay the same. PLEASE.

I am very very very excited for this. Personally I love everything about TMI and when the movie came out, I went along with 25 of my friends to watch it (and yes, we dressed up lol). And a lot of us really enjoyed it, like I really enjoyed just being able to see a few of the things from the book come to life. Yes it didn’t stick well to the book and yes a lot of the lines were cheesy, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have a good time watching it.

Now that they are considering a TV show I am so glad because all my mates keep asking me if they are going to do COA and I have nothing to tell them, and now I can!

But I sincerely hope a few things:
    1. They keep the actors. They were all great and I couldn’t bare to see any of them go (in particular Jamie, Robbie and Godfrey)

    2. The special effects have to be good or the whole thing is so unrealistic

    3. Good soundtrack, maybe even with a featured artist for continuity?

    4. Aired on a channel that will show in ALL COUNTRIES. I’m sorry but don’t you think it’s a little selfish that you’re all saying, ‘oh I hope it will air in the UK’ or ‘if it airs on this channel it will be in the USA and the UK.’ Like no, there are fans of this series all over the world. Like when the game for TMI came out in Indonesia first and everyone through a hissy fit like don’t you think countries that don’t get things first normally should have an opportunity? (sorry I’m gonna have a bit of a rant now) And also when they did the TMI tour around the USA, everyone was complaining that it didn’t come to their state or that they would have to drive 2 or so hours to see it. You know how long it would have taken me to drive? Heck even fly? It would have taken me over 24 hours and 3 plane rides, so I’m sorry but you have got to stop complaining if you live in the USA or even the UK because you get everything that a lot of countries don’t.

Sorry for the rant and I know it’s a little unrelated, and for the most part I love this fandom and I think it is very supportive, but seriously this is an issue and it makes me uncomfortable whenever I see stuff like this happen.

    • I love your rant! I feel you aaaaalll the time!! I just gave up complaining before even starting because with something as incredible and beautiful as Cassandra Clare’s worlds out there, why let it lead to negativity? I agree with all you have said! Cheers from the other side of the world!

    Yay!

  66. I’m a little disappointed. I’ll be okay with this IF they bring back all the cast members from the movie.

  67. Keep the cast. There has been a shift of movie screen actors moving to t.v for the lack of good scripts and imagination on the big screen. Don’t do HBO or Showtime or a channel you need to subscribe to. Make it available in the USA. The CW would be great as it falls inline with it’s paranormal lineup. And they have great shows. What is going on with The Infernal Devices? Is that in the works? T.V? Theater?

  68. yes tv show… NO TO RECASTING>
ALREADY ATTACHED TO CAST IN MOVIE.
If you have a tv series so close to the movie release with different actors many fans will be disappointed
they don’t see jamie c.bower or lily collins. The main 6 that need to the be the same are, lily collins, jamie campbell bower, robert sheehan, kevin ziegersm jemima west and godfrey gao.

    • Exactly! I can’t possibly imagine anyone else playing those characters.
And, not just those 6. They should also bring back Lena Headey, Aidan Turner, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (and, if they’re gonna redo City of Bones, Jared Harris and C.C.H. Pounder).

  69. Recast please recast!!! Sorry but Jamie is not Jace at all!!!

  70. As long as they follow the Hemlock Grove way of doing things (Following source material extremely well) it would be awesome. Please new cast though. The movie was almost campy like a bad 80’s movie

  71. I AM BEYOND EXCITED. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I’VE EVER HEARD.

  72. I hope that Godfrey Gao and Robert Sheehan and Jemima West are still remaining in the cast!! As for Lily, I LOVE her as Clary but she has a really busy schedule… Sadly I don’t count on her joining. I absolutely LOVE Jamie Campbell Bower. If he returns, I’d be more than happy but if he doesn’t I wouldn’t mind a new face. Jamie’s Jace wasn’t like Book Jace, that’s all. And I love Kevin Zegers but a younger cast for Alec wouldn’t hurt. If they completely recast it, I’d be happy still. This is so exciting!! They’re my favorite books ever.

  73. I’m glad they’ll be recasting. If they didn’t recast, I probably wouldn’t even give the TV show a chance. Everyone was too old. Jamie and Lily were 25, I think… I didn’t like them at all for Clary and Jace. I thought Jamie was charming, but definitely not Jace, to me. And I hate to be the one to say that Lily can’t act, but Lily can’t act.
Also, did the casting director read the book? What was with Valentine? And why was Alec 30 years old?

If they get Sebastian wrong, I’m going to be really disappointed.

  74. First off, I am SO happy that they listened to us about keeping the saga going. Seriously. Constantin didn’t have to do this, and I thank them IMMENSELY for supporting us fans and doing so. My hat is off to you guys, and I can’t thank you enough for doing this.

BUT that aside… I’m kind of worried about this. I, like most everyone, really want the same cast. Especially Robert and Lily who are SO very much Simon and Clary to me. So they, at the very least, should still be in the show. Even moreso in that Lily’s been so dedicated to it for so long. I also want Jamie because he just was Jace to me. In a perfect world, we’d get everyone back (or at least those three), but… If I had to choose just two, I’d say Robert and Lily. But… still give me Jamie, please. Everyone else too, of course!

And definitely Leana (sp?)! OMG. DEFINITELY her. But I can’t imagine how her GoT schedule wouldn’t contradict, unfortunately.

Other things I’m worried about is bad special effects, the show getting cancelled after only a few episodes (like so many do, sadly), and not all the fans around the world getting to watch it or catch up on it before the next season starts (box sets take forever to come out, after all).

And as much as people want it on HBO and stuff, I still say that the show should stay for teens like the source material is. That isn’t to say that I want it to be teen-like, though! I actually preferred the more dark tone of the movie and the older/more talented actors for it, so I PRAY that they keep it that way on TV and don’t downplay the horrors of this series.

And if they do recast… CC NEEDS to approve of everyone (she needs to be involved in the project, period), but for some reason I can’t see that happening, since she all ready okayed Lily and everyone else as perfect for their roles. IDK.

I’m also worried that they’re going to change things, since I don’t think the books are long enough to encompass a lot of episodes. And even Game of Thrones is starting to become too inaccurate from the novels… Hmm.

Here’s hoping for the best, though. I’ll definitely give the show a watch, and once again I thank Constantin so very much for giving us this chance. -bows to them gratefully-

And also great job to my fellow fans: who made this all possible–you all are so awesome and I’m proud to be part of this fandom with you! Can’t wait to go through this TV show with you guys, too;)

    -Shanna

  75. I’m not to sure how i feel about this. They can either make or break this. am iI the only one?

There are not words to describe how excited I am for this! I liked the movie but it in no way did the book justice! I hope that the TV show follows the book incredibly well and they don’t half ass it because its a TB show…….. I also am really excited but terrified to see who is cast….. I thought the movie was cast really well since I love Lilly Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower but if they cast someone else I hope they can at least do as well as Lilly and Jamie

  77. WHAT WOAH BY THE ANGEL AAAHHHH!! BIGGEST SURPRISE/NEWS OF MY…. MONTH!! more. information. now. please. Will they start all over again with new cast (maybe only some new cast- I don’t think there is any way in the world Magnus Bane could not ever not be Godfrey Gao) I don’t think I would want a complete new cast, just a bit of a makeover and re-design of their looks and characteristics maybe (*cough*Jamie’s hair *cough*). Or will they pick up at City of Ashes…. I’m probably hoping no, re-do CoB, but that’s a hard thing to think about. Do it again and do it properly! Damn Cassandra Clare this is what you were talking about all along with TV, and we’d all lost hope it could be TMI and thought TID. Now I’m also relieved there are probably no plans as of yet for TID, I couldn’t deal with that…. yet. But overall, no one can deny- THIS IS AMAZING ASFDGHJKL::SD!!!!!!!!

  78. Yes! I’m freaking out so much I’m trembling. I did wonder if Aidan Turner was growing his Luke beard when I saw recent photos, so it might not be a recasting, or at least a *full* one. I really hope they don’t recast…

  79. If there’s no recast, I’m delighted. If they offer the parts to the movie actors first and only recast as needed I’ll watch it. If a total recast, I’m not interested at all.
Also, we don’t even have news of any networks so this is far from the sure thing the article’s title suggests.

  80. Brilliant idea , just Brilliant

  81. i like the idea of it becoming a tv series but i don’t like how they have to recast. i love the original cast and i think they should stick with it and since they already started the movies they should finish the series as movies.

  82. Reblogged this on Beautiful Memories and commented:
I’m not too sure about this, but it better be better than the movie. Being optimistic here, so don’t let me down

  83. The TV show will presumably be made next year and will be a pilot. If it’s taken up by a Broadcaster the first series will take another year. that would be early 2016! Recasting is practically guaranteed I would guess because of the time-scale. As a big Robbie Sheehan fan it’s really touching that no-one seems to want his casting changed.Since TMI he’s been really busy with films, in all but one of which he’s been the lead.Just a real shame that because of the script of the first film he didn’t get to play the transformation of his character in City of Ashes film, because he was definitely chosen for his acting abilities and would have excelled in the second film.Presumably that’s why Cassie was so keen on him for the part. Watch out for The Messenger, a supernatural film he’s the lead in, out next year.Hoping he’ll be in TMI TV series but if not, good luck to whoever takes the part of Simon because he’s a very hard act to follow!

  84. The castings were perfect in the movie, Robie, Jemima and Jamie might take the new roles but i doubt lily, kevin and the rest will.

I’m a tad bit wary of the tv show because of how the directors and screenwriters often change the overall plot of a story. Honestly, after getting so attached to the previous characters in the movie, I hope that maybe one or two will be brought into the show; though I see that the actors/actresses have an extremely busy schedule. Overall, I’m definitely going to watch the show, but I’m silently praying that I won’t have to go all ‘psycho-ass-fangirl’ on the creators of the show. Because, trust me, it’ll come to that, and I’m positive I’ll have a whole army to back me up.

  86. excellent. i want some characters to be recast but then again there’s others i don’t like i really don’t want simon or isabelle or jocelyn or luke to be recast i’m not particularly fussed with the rest. i’m also a bit concerned about plot deviation but the movie frankly was shit so i’m glad they at least have more time to stick to the plot, so if they do that and cast well this will be super awesome.

  87. Reblogged this on booksandbookmarks and commented:
    I’m so happy. :’)

  88. I have to say that I love The Mortal Instruments books and maybe it’s nice that they’re planning to do TV series. But to be honest I am not happy about this. I just don’t think it’s a good idea. City of Bones wasn’t a good movie but what I liked the most in it and I wouldn’t change it was the casting. I am afraid that there will be recast in a tv series and I don’t know if I would like to watch it without Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers or Godfrey Gao. I think that Lily and Jace are just meant to be Jace and Clary and I would feel empty if someone different played them.
I read a lot of books and when someone wants to make a tv series they are often very different. I don’t want that to happen to TMI ;(

  89. I would like to have a second movie! A serie is okay, but I agree with @xxmaulinexx. For example the vampire diaries are completly diffrent to the books, after the second season. I´m okay with a serie when the original cast will be a part of it, but they wont to change the cast, thats aweful 😦 😦

    • It´s okay when you change Valentin, Joclyn, Luke and Isabelle, but Magnus is so great!!! Lily and Jamie have to play the maine charackters!!! Please!

  90. I just have three major problems with this
One: TV series that are based off of books always get changed loads. Heartland being my main argument for this point. If they change this loads I may just disown the world.
Two: Jamie and Robbie, they were both perfect for their parts, same with Kevin, I didn’t become hatched to any others apart from maybe Luke, but gah they can’t not have Jamie and Robbie as Jace and Simon.
Three: America is going to get it before us >.>

  91. I don’t really have a problem with TMI in being a television series but the problem is that the actors were on point in the film. If they’re going to make a re-casting, they have to make sure that the new actors can better the performance that Lily Collins, Jamie Bower, Robert Sheehan, Godfrey Gao, and Kevin Zegers did in the film, or at least have the same type of performance those said actors did in the film.

  92. The Mortal Instrument as a TV Serie ? Hell yes !
But … Not so sure that I’m going to watch it. I really like the cast in the movie. Magnus, Clary, Jace, Alec, Isabelle and Simon are just wonderful and if I don’t see them in the serie.. Well, for me it would be disturbing.
I really hope to see them !
And please, even if it has works for The Vampire Diaries to make their way out of the books, don’t do this, or I think it would be a complete disaster !

  93. I love Kevin // October 13, 2014 at 6:22 AM // Reply

I think that the show would be absolutely awful if they left out any of the characters. The cast from the film were exactly what I had imagined.

If Kevin Zegers is not in the tv show I will wet myself forever.

  94. I’d love to audition for the new TV series if they are having a new cast!

  95. I’m glad they want to go deeper but the cast was perfect to me and now we know everyone by their faces. They have to keep the cast, they are amazing and they will always be my favorite cast for the TMI series

  96. yes and hbo needs to pick it up to replace true blood!

  97. WOW! That is great news, they should start with the first book since the movie did not do it justice. Jamie and Lily were great actually all the characters with the exemption of Clary’s dad he should be blond. Looking forward to the new TV series!!!

  98. Please only, if you want to make a film in the TV series leave at least the main actors Jamie and Lily in the series they are great, but without them it will fail!

  99. I love the cast and Jamie is perfect as Jace.

I love the idea of making the tmi series into a tv series because they will be able to add all of the detail and events that happened in the book. I really hope that they have the same cast though because that is the only thing that I really liked from the movie and the only thing that was right, please don’t change them.

  102. I think that the tv series is great idea but i cant imagine other jace or clary or anyone else so i am sad about recasting pleas dont change cast

  103. This is a good idea. I get the idea that they won’t start over with City of Bones, though, and I think that they should. Just start from scratch. And actually get the story right this time. Please.

well, honestly the news are amazing, really liked the movie the 1st time I saw it, but it was becauuse i hadn’t read the book, after reading the book..well i just got mad, i was like..”well THAT didn’t happen in the book” like for example: clary using a powerful rune!,,,i mean!! F*cking Duucks!! i read twice CoB and she doesn’t use a rune capable of controlling demons in it…well as for the cast…i LOVE Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane, also Alec, Izzy, and of couurse simon….OH!! and jocelyn!!! buut…i am really happy for it, i am looking forward to it,,,and i hope to see flying demonic bikes!!!!! I’d love to see avan Jogia as Rafael Santiago.

  105. can they still keep Simon from the original cast pls

  106. everybody is happy but a lot of us don’t want recasting. if you check #DontChangeTMICast #lilyisourclary #jamieisourjace #KeepOriginalTMICast their is quite a few displeased about this recasting.

  107. As the majority of the actors were so perfect for the roles they should definitely be offered the parts in the TV series. If they then decide not to do it for whatever reason they have that right even though that’ll be sad.The problem with a complete recast is that many fans will not come on board the TV series because many of the cast WERE the characters to the fans.Kind of feel if there is a complete recast that the producers are blaming the actors for the film’s failure to generate enough money! That fault lies with the script and the bad marketing strategy in my opinion. The actors did a great job with what they had available to them.If the producers aren’t transparent with the casting process that will be a big disservice to the COB actors AND the fans!

  108. This is my first time pay a quick visit at here and i
am truly impressed to read everthing at one place.

  109. they cant recast!!!!!!!!!!

  110. OMG, they better have a tall asian for Magnus Bane adn a cute blue eyed boy for Alec Lightwood, or I’ll just loose it!

  111. Happy to see them doing something with it. TV show sounds good. But I was hoping they would not re-cast the characters. They had good actors in the movie.

  112. I’m really excited about this! Although, I’m hoping the show will start with City of Ashes. I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing a different take on City of Bones, but I’m just eager to see the rest of the books adapted. I know they changed some things in the City of Bones movie, but overall, I think it was a good adaptation of the book. Plus, wouldn’t it be weird to start with of City of Bones after they just made it into a movie? I’m also really eager to see Sebastian.

  113. Its fine as long as they keep the original cast..i cant imagine anyone besides them…

  114. I like the idea and yet I would like to see them continue with the movies because I think it would suck to start putting a book series out as movies and then stop. I wouldn’t mind seeing it on TV; I would like to know what channel it would be on.

  115. I am very excited for this!
I seriously think if they are going to start it all again a recast will probably have to happen as the old cast may be buzy and well, lets face it, they are probably a bit too old. I mean I loved Clary and Simon and Magnus, they were perf and I liked Alec but he was too old and a little over tough and Jace, well I didn’t like him at all, thats just my opinion but I really didn’t like him. Izzy was okay but she could have been a bit girly and well yeah.
I think a tv series will be great because they can really delve into it all and please don’t assume that the CGI and special effects will be bad because of a slightly lower budget, I watch a lot of TV series with amazing special effects and CGI.
I also think they need to start from CoB because otherwise the whole tv series will no be true to the books because of what happened in CoB movie.
I really want to rant about how much I dislike the movie AS A BOOK ADAPTION, but I wont because I do like it as a movie, like I would like a non-book adapted movie because I try not to associate CoB to the books because quite honestly it makes me cry and scream at the TV.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one but even after watching films that were originally books, I still imagine the characters not as the movie cast. This is why I’m okay with a re-cast because even then, I will still imagine them how I do and not as the movie/tv cast. I do hope they keep Simon and Magnus though, I really liked them.
But anyway, this is great news and guys surely you should just be happy that an amazing book series by an amazing author is coming to life and we, the fans, will get to see it. We get to see the shadow world come to life and I don’t care about a re-cast or anything trivial like that, I Am happy that my favourite series can come to live and I can watch and not just read the series come to live.

(Sorry if this doesn’t make sense to anyone and sorry if I have caused offence to anyone)

Dude. Constantin owns the rights they are more than welcome to change the ages of the characters.

      • But then its different to the book and that literally makes no sense there ages are pretty key

      • Well it does make sense thst they can, but whats the point when it will become different to the books

Okay. Yes I like this but i think that what they said about HAVING To leave aside some very important parts of TMI the books was just an excuse because the movie was unfortunately awful (if you read the book and then watched the movie) i like the idea of a recast because WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TEENAGERS PEOPLE not adults. Jamie is good looking alright but he’s not as good as JACE HERONDALE should be and he’s not muscular. Clary is supposed to be. 15 not 20 or whatever Lily C.’s age is. Magnus was very fine because he is a warlock and he is 300-400 years old. Just saying. I hope they cast TEENAGERS not models nor people who look older than what the character’s age should be.

When my friend found this article at school, our whole group of friends freaked out. I was almost in tears…

    I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that the television series is so much better than the movie and that no important parts are left out. One of the biggest things I have with the movie is that Izzy is supposed to be the fashionable one, and yet, Clary is the one with make-up and short, fashionable dresses, while Izzy wears jeans and a t-shirt. IT SHOULD BE THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  119. By the Angel ….This is the best news I heard by far! Now let’s just hope they will do the series right (meaning exactly like the book …Simon turning into a rat, Rafeal as vampire not a vampire lieutenant) Please just choose better actors for the tv series…Need a hotter Jace, Izzy needs to be more fiesty like in the books, Alec… well he needs to at least speak more than 3 words

  120. I like the idea of TMI being adapted as a tv show. I think a tv show gives the chance to be a more faithful adaptation. But just because it’s a tv show, doesn’t mean that it won’t be good or faithful. I would love to audition for Clary if Lily Collins didn’t come back. As much as I loved the cast, I think a fresh start would be good.

  121. I love Lilly Collins as Clary I thought she did a great job and she looks so much like the Clary I imagine. same with Robert sheehan he was perfect playing Simon and looks the role. I like Jamie Campbell as an actor but I dont see him being Jace but I thought he played him well

I actually hope Lilly Collins will be Clary in the episodes she played her so well. I also can’t wait until the first episode comes out but until then I must just dream lol.

  122. dont change the actors, that will be soooo disapointing

I am a big fan of The Mortal Instruments and only started to read the books after the film! I read them all and loved them! When I look back, yes the movie missed out on so much and got the ending wrong! Clary wasn’t supposed to have the cup, but she did!
I would prefer them as movies, as they would be a lot better and I feel if they become a tv series they could be lost and changed dramatically and end up with nothing from the book in them just like The Vampire Diaries! I don’t really like the idea of the books going from movie to tv series, but im happy that The Mortal Instruments is still going on and not being stopped completely.
I do hope they keep the cast they had in the movie as after seeing the movie, I feel that I wont get used to the characters or actors or actresses that will take the parts in the tv series, as I will always remember the cast from the movie as those characters, if they don’t keep the cast I will be disappointed, not all of the cast did fit the parts that they had like Valentine wasn’t valentine, but they must have seen something in him that was Valentine in the book and Jace and all the rest of the characters, they must have seen part of the characters in the actors or they wouldn’t have hired them, we all have are own imaginations of what the characters should be, but they have to choose someone one for them and they chose them for a reason!

  124. Honestly, I think it’s a good idea because as you can see 1 film wasn’t the best. I agree that it’s better, getting deeper into it and stuff. I hope they will start over, but still with the same cast. Without Jamie and Lily I’m going to die. But you can throw away Jonathan Meyers, I really think he was shit.

    • I wasn’t a fan of his Valentine either. He was a decent enough villain in general…but not Valentine. Actors on my wishlist to keep at the very least if it’s a partial recast are Aidan Turner, Lena Heady, Robert Sheehan, and possibly Jamie and Lily.

  125. Oh, and I don’t want it to end up like The Vampire Diaries, I haven’t read the book and I love the series but I know what happened, how much was added, it’s totally pain in the ass for the people who read the books and loved it and just gave up after watching it. I read all the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices and I don’t know what I will do if they will do the same thing as TVD ….

  126. BY THE ANGEL THIS IS A GREAT IDEA! but please please please keep it close to the books. they just wouldn’t be the same or as good if they didn’t relate to the books!

  127. I’m totally one hundred percent behind them. Lord knows the movie was shitty (and this is coming from a die-hard fan of the books) And they did leave out lots of important stuff. And don’t even get me started on how they changed the ending to Clary having the Cup on her like what the actual fukk? It should have been Valentine because how else are you going to start filming City of Ashes if Valentine doesn’t have the cup?

  132. Personally I feel that jace Isabelle alec and clary where perfect as they were and also Simon so recasting is a bad idea but they need to make a series because the movie was carp but the people playing the roles were good

  133. TV show will be so much better, i actually think they need to recast jace ( i love jamie but hes way to serious for this character) although i do think he should still be British because the accent goes really well with the character( dont know why it just does), i really wish Alex Pettyfer was cast as jace. He is exactly how i imagine jace, Lily collins needs to stay as clary and robert sheehan and jemima west as simon and Izzy. But Alec and valentine seriously need to be recast i hated alec in the movie was i the only one? Just abit concerned about how to watcch it in the uk ight be a problem:(

  134. When you change things, people become less interested. Keep the cast, and make them all movies.

  135. recasting?? I don’t like the idea of changing the casts 😦 It makes me really upset . Who will be the new casts?? What happened to Lily Collins and Jamie Bower, aren’t they going to do the project again?? and in finding what channel it would be a problem here in the Philippines 😦

i strongly agreed and supported the series instead from the beginning of the thought of it, bt i have to say im really disappointed in the fact that the cast change, i mean i watch remakes of once great movies and it’s horrible…sometimes it’s because the change in cast, and i know that i probably won’t be as interested in it as i was with the original cast, they made me like that movie even though i read the book…so what if the movie didn’t add up compared to the book, that’s something you correcting right now bt the cast is something big, they made it what it was …that’s all im saying

  140. would love the news if they were not recasting! so sad I loved the movie cast they were so on point and with the new cast unfortunately not so much )=

  141. Please don’t change the cast… No I love the old cast. I love Isabelle and Alec… No no no…

  142. Angel’s Name no!!!!
Why are they making it in TV series!!!
If they do that, fans in some countries, such as my country Vietnam, won’t be able to see it!!!

I reject the idea making it in TV series!

  143. I’m really glad that they are giving mortal instruments another go. I think it can last a long time as a tv series because they can go into much more detail that way. I think the movie was not a success infact it pit alot of people of mortal instruments ever though it is a great book. But im so sad that its only in the U.S or on Netflix. Why not Australian cable tv…..not all of us can get online 24/7. I’m begging you guys to put mortal instruments on in AUSTRALIA!!! (cable tv) but im really looking forward to watching it!

  144. I’ve always agreed that the books would make a good tv show, but I’m not loving the recasting. All the cast members that were already on The City of Bones played their characters in a way I felt really displayed how they were in the books. I loved Lily Collins as Clary and Jamie Bower as Jace. The Shadowhunter TV show doesn’t feel like the story in the movies, because they play the characters pretty differently. I would have much rather had a sequel or have had the whole thing started off as a tv show, instead of giving us the first movie and then leaving it at that.
