Daang Goodman brings punk rock influence to ‘MORTAL INSTRUMENTS’ clothing line
When Hot Topic secured licensing rights for The Mortal Instruments, they knew exactly what designer they wanted to bring The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones-inspired clothing line to life: TRIPP nyc’s Daang Goodman.
“Daang Goodman has been the preeminent fashion designer for New York’s alternative scene for decades. When our partnership for this film came together with Constantin Film and Sony Pictures Consumer Products, we immediately thought of her to design the collection,” said Cindy Levitt, Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Hot Topic, in a statement. “Her punk rock design sensibility has been critical in creating a line of apparel that’s authentic to the film, as well as fashion forward.”
TMI Source got a sneak peek of the Mortal Instruments clothing line Friday in New York City, which features tank tops, dresses, leggings and moto jackets and vests brandished with Angelic Power runes and prints from the film and movie poster. The prices range from $29.50-$54.50.
When Goodman read City of Bones, she was struck by the fantasy world Cassandra Clare has created, as well as the “good versus evil” battle that wages throughout the series.
“I just love those kind of stories,” Goodman said. “I understand the character very well and I’d love to live that life.”
When designing the line, Goodman worked with Sony Pictures to ensure the authenticity of the clothes. Aside from stressing the importance that the runes be identical to those in the film, Sony sent her movie stills and she created designs based off the looks in the film.
Goodman also drew big inspiration from the movie poster, from which both the Parallel Worlds dress and leggings were created.
But it was Goodman’s attention to detail that really takes this collection to a different level. Much how like the runes are incorporated into varying aspects of the film – from belt buckles to architecture – runes played a big part in the collection. Not only does one of the tank tops brilliantly make use of an Angelic Power rune on the back, but there are runes on the buttons and zippers.
“Daang did such a great job at interpreting it. She’s such an amazing designer and so her touch on this was perfect,” Levitt said. “That’s why we didn’t want to go to an apparel manufacturer. We wanted Daang to interpret her thoughts into what it is. Like that rune back, who would’ve thought of that? I was blown away by the detail of the runes and the zipper folds.”
Goodman didn’t face too much of difficulty when creating the line. She said the designs were easy, but the photograph apparel and zipper designs posed a challenge.
“The photograph one you have to get the perfect image and color,” she said. “All the photographic prints with the color are put directly into the fabric to make it almost the same as the poster. That’s a little bit difficult. But, all-in-all, nothing was very difficult.”
With all of the positive feedback and anticipation that she’s heard, Goodman is honored to be a part of the clothing line. Like us, she is counting the days until The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones release on Aug. 21.
“I am part of the fans,” she told us. “I can’t wait to go stand in that line and wear the clothes and see the movie. That’s what I’m waiting for.”
MORE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS MERCHANDISE ON THE WAY
Aside from the clothing line, Hot Topic will be selling more Mortal Instruments merchandise closer to the film’s release. Among the merchandise on the way includes t-shirts, prop replica jewelry – including cuff bracelets, rings and necklaces – bags, temporary rune tattoos and steles.
In the film you can see the actors wearing some of the pieces that will be sold as replica jewelry. “Some of those replica pieces will be there,” Levitt told us.
For international fans outside of the United States and Canada, Hot Topic ships internationally!
