VOTE ‘Mortal Instruments’ — What will be Hollywood’s next book-to-movie superfranchise?

With blockbuster success stories of Harry Potter, Twilight and now The Hunger Games, NOLA.com is asking fans what Young Adult franchise will be Hollywood’s next book-to-movie superfranchise?

The Mortal Instruments is nominated–of course–in the “Harry Potter” division, along with some other fantasy thrillers.

The “Harry Potter” division:

1. “Mortal Instruments” — This supernatural mystery already has a key ingredient to big box-office: a thriving fan base. Four books have been published, with two more promised. Screen Gems Constantin Film is reportedly developing a movie version, with Harald Zwart set to direct and Lily Collins as the girl who uncovers strange secrets about her bloodlines.

2. “The Seventh Son” — “Harry Potter” studio Warner Bros. is currently in production on this fantasy adventure, based on the first book in Joseph Delaney’s “Wardstone Chronicles.” Published under the title “The Spook’s Apprentice,” it tells the story of an 18th century ghostbusting teen and it boasts a cast that includes Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Olivia Williams and Ben Barnes.

3. “Septimus Heap” — The books, chronicling the adventures of a seventh son of a seventh son — thus one powerful dude — have sold more than a million copies in the United States alone and are bestsellers all. Warner Bros. has been working to develop a feature-film version of the first book in the six-book (so far) cycle, with “Marley & Me” helmer David Frankel apparently in line to direct.

4. “Ender’s Game” — Summit Entertainment knows that its “Twlight” ride is about to end, with the last movie in that franchise set for release this year. That’s why it’s in New Orleans now, shooting what it hopes will be the successor. Based on the sci-fi books by Orson Scott Card, it tells the story of a group of youngsters at a military academy as they train to repel an impending alien invasion.

5. “Legend” — CBS Films has already jumped on this sci-fi adventure, about two teens who form an unlikely alliance in a dystopian, militarized future North America. But its real trump card might be in its producer, Wyck Godfrey, who — as a producer of the “Twilight” series — knows a thing or two about box-office phenomena.

6. “Maximum Ride” — The eight-book cycle by James Patterson follows six fugitive kids who have been genetically enhanced in a lab experiment. Columbia Pictures holds the movie rights, although attempts at a big-screen incarnation suffered a blow when “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke reportedly dropped out of the project.

7. “Incarceron” — “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner was once circling 20th Century Fox’s film version of the first book in Catherine Fisher’s series, about people living in a vast, futuristic prison. It’s unclear if he’s officially attached to it, though, or where in development the project is.

8. “Night Circus” — Erin Morgenstern’s 2011 novel — a “phantasmagorical fairy tale” set in a version of Victorian London — is fairly new on the scene, but centered as it is around a magical circus that exists only from sunrise to sunset, it sounds tailor-made for the big screen.

  1. Erm…did you forget about Beautiful Creatures? They’re about to start filming, and based on the buzz so far, I’d sit them in the #2 spot behind TMI.

  2. Also worth a mention: Wicked Lovely (already have a screenplay and director), Fallen, and White Cat.

  3. YAYAY VOTED FOR THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS OF COURSE, AND VAMPIRE ACADEMY!!! ❤

  4. I voted for TMI but The Night Circus and Legend are great too and I wouldn’t be surprised if the latter does extremely well, movie wise. I think it has a lot of fans!

  5. Voted for TMI, even though I also love Ender’s Game and I’m really looking forward to the movie!
