Movie Monday #17: Garroway Books

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 17: Garroway Books

Alyssa, TMI Source: There are various turning points in the beginning of CITY OF BONES and I think the scene where the reader learns a lot about the dangers and truths of this Downworld is at Luke’s, when Pangborn and Blackwell pay a visit. One moment it’s a time for Clary to quickly reflect on her old life–where Luke was just Luke and not involved in this dangerous world–and then just as quickly learn about the danger she faces, as well as the fate of her mother Jocelyn.

Also this is a turning point for Jace when he sees the men he thinks murdered his father when he was young. This is where the reader gets their first glimpse of vulnerability in our tough Shadowhunter, which hints at his troubled past. After this scene there is truly no going back to normal for Clary.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: This will be another important scene for Clary’s continued journey of understanding who she really is. I always found this part of the book especially emotional for two reasons: 1. Clary learns that Luke, the closest male influence she’s ever had to a father, is also involved in this strange new world she’s found herself in. And he doesn’t seem to care about helping Jocelyn or Clary. 2. We really see that first vulnerable side to the seemingly tough Jace when he says that Pangborn and Blackwell are the men who killed his father.

This will be another powerful scene that will continue to rocket the suspense, mystery and thrill of this story. Can’t wait!

Shannon, TMI Institute: I think the scenes shot at Luke’s store will be a big turning point in the movie. Clary has just been introduced to the Shadowhunter world and learned that her mother was more involved than she ever expected and Jace is about to see the two men that he thinks murdered his father. I think this scene will show a transition in character development and is when the adventure will truly begin.

Tita, TMI News en Español: The scene that takes place in Garroway Books is funny and heartbreaking at the same time. Let me explain. When Jace and Clary arrive to the Garroway Books Store, the whole situation with Simon, their conversation and everything is so funny.. Until they get inside and they hear the story of how Blackwell and Pangborn killed Jace’s father. How Clary discovers Luke’s past.. Oh my, this part of the movie is going to be so interesting that I can’t wait to see it 🙂

What are your thoughts? How important do you think the scene at Luke’s bookstore will play in the movie? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

  1. I am really interested, especially after reading that they have apparently added a fight sequence to this scene, to see exactly how they change up this scene in the final movie.
