Movie Monday #18: The Infirmary

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 18: The Infirmary

Alyssa, TMI Source: We’ve learned from fans on the set that they have filmed this scene, but the questions lies in how it will play out on the big screen. Following the ravenor attack, with venom running in her veins, Jace carries Clary back to the Institute. On the way Clary passes out, which leaves the audience on their heels. In situations like this movies tend to move with the main character–Clary–so in the next scene I could see us staring at a black screen for a second while Isabelle and Alec’s voices fill the space–just like in the book–before Clary opens her eyes and comes face-to-face with the Institute for the first time and the Shadowhunter world.

Amber, TMI Institute: I can see this scene being played out from Clary’s POV. She opens her eyes. The screen is a bit blurry but clears in a few seconds. I’m not sure if it will play out exactly like the book. I believe there can be some creative liberties taken, but I feel like they will still introduce the rest of the Shadowhunters and get into more explanation on their strange and mysterious world. I can’t wait to see how it looks on the big screen!

Katie, Mundie Moms: I’m looking forward to seeing how this scene will play out in the movie. It’s pivotal chapter in the book both where Clary finds out more about the Shadowhunter world, and were we meet the rest of the Shadowhunters. Movie wise I’m curious to know what they do with it. I think they can definitely incorporate some new elements to the scene for the big screen that won’t take away from all that happens in this chapter while still maintaining some the crucial moments from the scene. I’m excited to see this chapter come to life.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I’m very interested to see how they adapt the infirmary scene (chapter 5) for the big screen. We have learned from one of our Toronto correspondents that this scene has been filmed. We’ve discussed before on Movie Mondays about Clary’s dreams. Will they be in the movie? I’m hoping that they will to a certain degree, especially the angels which are so symbolic. I’m interested to see how they will show the passing of the three days that Clary is out. Will we hear the conversations between Isabelle and Alec? We will see but this is another important scene that shows Clary’s changing world.

Tita, TMI News en Español: The infirmary scene at the Institute in which Clary lays unconscious after the attack at her house is really interesting in the book, and I really expect to find it in the movie. Why? There’s a lot of information and stuff going on there. We learn about the Institute, about the Shadowhunters, a little bit more about Hodge, and that Jace didn’t visit her all the three days she’s been in there, that Jace isn’t Isabelle’s brother and that his parents are dead….  OMG so many things going on that the audience really need to know!

What are your thoughts? How do you think the infirmary scene will play out on screen? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

this intergral to keep in this and i think there’s a blot of interesting and awesome ways to intrepet this! I really like weekly feature guys! Maybe the’ll start off with a black screen with hearing Alec and Izzy and voices, Clary will fully wake up . Her vision as her she opens her eyes will start off blurry as she opens her eyes before it becomes normal and she’ll be confused at first

  2. I’m curious along with interested in what you really are covering right here.
