Tune Tuesday: “Devil’s Tears” by Angus & Julia Stone

Every Tuesday here at TMI Source is Tune Tuesday, where we share a song that relates to The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices or The Dark Artifices. This week’s Tune is one of my favourite songs ever, by an Australian brother and sister duo Angus & Julia Stone. I’ve loved their folksy, acoustic sound for ages and I must have to Devil’s Tears hundreds of times before only just realised how perfect a story it is for the crazy triangle between Clary, Sebastian and Jace in City of Lost Souls.

Let me explain.

He said “I am the devil, boy, come with me
And we’ll make many storms”
He offered me the universe
But inside my heart there’s a picture of a girl

Some call love a curse, some call love a thief
But she’s my home
And she’s as much apart for this broken heart, but see
Broken bones always seem to mend

I’ll taste the devil’s tears
Drink from his soul, but I’ll never give up you
I’ll taste the devil’s tears
Drink from his soul, but I’ll never give up you

This is the first part of the song. It’s clear to me that it feels as though the song has been written from Jace’s point of view. Sebastian, the devil’s boy, offers Jace everything to be his partner in crime but Jace, the real Jace, the one stuck inside Sebastian’s crazy Lilith spell, doesn’t want any of it. He just wants Clary.

He said “I am the devil, boy,
Come with me and we’ll break many laws”
He offered me eternal life but inside my heart there’s a picture of a girl

Some call love a curse, some call love a thief
But she’s my home and she
And she’s as much apart for this broken heart, but see
Broken bones always seem to mend

I’ll taste the devil’s tears
Drink from his soul, but I’ll never give up you
I’ll taste the devil’s tears
Drink from his soul, but I’ll never give up you

The second part of the song is very similar to the first half, but offers more promises from the devil’s boy. This time, eternal life. To many, including our darling Magnus Bane, eternity is a curse and if you dig a little deeper (thing back to English lessons and analysing poetry!) it seems as though the songwriter is drawing attention to unnatural promises contrasting with the purity of true love.

Contradictions which sum up our twisted triangle perfectly, no?

In any case, I’m literally addicted to this song, and all the others by Angus & Julia Stone. Have a listen to this (and Yellow Brick Road and For You) and let me know what you think. Isn’t it eerie how perfect this is for our story? If CoLS makes it to a movie, Alyssa and I are campaigning, with placards and everything, to get this on the soundtrack. Will you guys join us? Sound off in the comments!

  8. I was checking to see if anyone else thought of the meaning of this song. I just read the mortal instruments though but I hadn’t but the two together. You can think of Sammael tempting Magnus or at least threatening to take him and he’s willing to do it for Alec. And I guess the same goes with Jace and Sebastian since he’s of Lilith and Sammael would be his step father. I hear the song as walking with Satin and hearing his temptations but remembering what it means to love which is the peak of humanity. And you realize the empty lies behind the promises of power from something so evil. When you can get true eternal life through the love of God. All it takes is to remember those you love to stay pure. But you can still taste the Devil’s tears, his lies and promises. Drink from his soul, and empathize with his station. Then at the end of the day keep your heart on the side of love.
