Movie Monday #23: Clary’s art
We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.
I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
Week 23: Clary’s art
Alyssa, TMI Source: Like her mother, Jocelyn, Clary is a very gifted artist. Clary’s art is a big part of who she is not only in CITY OF BONES but throughout the series. And we learn how special Clary is. But in CITY OF BONES Clary’s reliance on her art as a creative outlet is evident, as well as when she draws the Mortal Cup and learns about her ability. We might not see just how much attention focused on Clary’s art in the film as it is in the book, but that’s to be expected with book-to-film adaptations.
Amber, TMI Institute: Clary always feels she’s in the shadow of her mother, but Clary is an artist in her own right. There are moments in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones where she tries to draw pictures of Jace, but she just never feels like it does him justice. I think her art truly is an extension of the side of Clary that tries to see more than what her mind allows. She’s frustrated with her lack of vision, which I feel is partly because of her mind being blocked by Magnus. She also draws a cup to practice her powers, which leads to a major plot point. So, in all reality, Clary’s art will have to be in the film. How much they use will be dependant on how well it transitions from page to screen.
Tita, TMI News en Español: Clary is such an artist, like her mom, and we really find out how special she is in the first book. She has an special gift that will be very helpful for Shadowhunters and their fight against evil. But for now, I can’t wait to watch and enjoy how the studio is going to represent that artistic part of Clary on the big screen.
What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Clary and her art come to life on the big screen? Join in on the discussion!
Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

By the Angel! I am so excited! I can’t believe I never really thought about Clary’s art! Can’t wait to see it now!
hell yeah1 can’t wait and tehy do have to because it’s part of her character and it a major plot point and by the angel, I can’t wait either!
Well, Clarys art is her gift; natural and supernatural. She creates runes, giving the angelic language an actual form. This isnt really understood until the fearless rune Alec and Jace try out. But it should be hinted at in COB, like I can see her drawing a picture of a rune, not understanding what it is in the first scene of the movie, disreguarding it as mindless scribbling, than as she tirns away the rune flares with a blue light or something. IDK. Just an interesting way to introduce her power immediately.
