Movie Monday #24: History of the Parabatai

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 24: History of the Parabatai

Alyssa, TMI Source: The history of Parabatai is something that is so essential to not only THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS but to all of Cassandra Clare’s SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES. But it’s something that is quite important in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES in explaining the Shadowhunter world and the depth of the loyalty involved in the Parabatai bond. I don’t see how Jace and Alec’s and Luke and Valentine’s Parabatai bonds cannot be referenced in the film as it does provide background for not only the world of the Shadowhunters but for the characters of Jace, Alec, Luke and Valentine, as well.

Amber, TMI Institute: The history of the Parabatai is something that I forsee being referenced in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. To be able to understand the depth of the relationship between Jace and Alec, the viewers (especially the movie goers who haven’t read the book) will need to know what it is that makes the bond of these two so special. They will need to know why they fight together as a team and what it is about the rune that makes this bond important. I feel this can be achieved when they explain the world of the Shadowhunters to Clary. They can do this throughout the movie to keep the pacing upbeat. I am thrilled to see what they do with this. We have nine months before until TMI is due! Can’t wait!

Katie, Mundie Moms: I love the history of the parabatai. With it being such a huge role in both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments series, I’d be really surprised if this was left out of the movie. This doesn’t need to have it’s own scene. They can easily incorporate the history of the parabatai in a scene where other things are going on, or a scene were they’re explaining shadowhunter history to Clary. I’m wondering if they’re going to show the weapons rooms scene. If they do, they could talk about the different weapons and the role of the parabatai all at the same time. I can not wait to see what they do with this movie!! Is it August yet? LOL

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I hope that at least a mention of the Parabatai makes it into ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.’ This really is an essential element of Shadowhunter history that is seen throughout ‘The Mortal Instruments’ as well as ‘The Infernal Devices’ and Cassie’s nest series, ‘The Dark Artifices.’ It wouldn’t take long to mention the Parabatai so I really hope that they do. Yet another element that I can’t wait to see how they handle it in the film.

Tita, TMI News en Español: Parabatai, is one of the most beautiful things Cassandra Clare created in the series. The concept of what a parabatai is to each other is so deep, so strong, so powerful that is going to be in the movie and I think we are going to get to know a lot in the first movie, why? We have first of all Alec and Jace as parabatai, but, not only them.. Luke and Valentine were paratabai, and if the studio keep the end of the book, we are going to hear about their past a big as parabatai. So yes, I really think we are going to hear about parabatai because of the actual pair, and the pair that were…

What are your thoughts? How do you think the Parabatai background will be represented in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

I personally hope that it will show importance in the movie as it does in the books. I’m hoping the movie doesn’t totally screw it up.
