How have mundanes reacted to THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES teaser trailer?
There are no words to describe the fandom’s excitement in regards to the release of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES teaser trailer. We’ve all been waiting days, weeks, months, years, even, for a glimpse of a live-action adaptation of our favorite series.
And it was everything we had hoped for and more.
The teaser trailer played in front of most screenings of Breaking Dawn Part 2, which grossed $141.3 million in the United States its opening weekend. It gave quite a lot people (who haven’t heard of the series) a glimpse at what has the opportunity to be the next big thing now that Twilight has come to an end.
So how have the non-fans–the mundanes (did you read that as mundaaaaanes, too?)–react to the teaser trailer?
From what I’ve heard, quite well, actually.
I was lucky enough to glimpse the teaser trailer on the big screen in front of Breaking Dawn Part 2 and it was even more epic on a big screen–where the film will be in nine months. But it also gave me an opportunity to listen to the reactions of the mundanes in the audience.
The theater reacted quite positively to the teaser trailer. I could hear excitement and heard people around me wanting to go out and read the book. It was an amazing feeling to hear that the teaser trailer was garnering a positive reaction.
I also showed the trailer to some family and friends–from young women to middle-aged women to middle-aged men to young men–and they all seemed intrigued by it.
When I asked them what was most appealing about it I got a few varying reactions. The guys loved the action, as did the women, and everyone really liked the mythology in the trailer and the story.
As fans we know the events of the book and the series, but the mundanes don’t know the story and it’s great to see that they want to know more about Cassandra Clare’s world and see the film.
I’ve scanned through different social media websites, like Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, and found–for the most part–an intrigue and motivation to read this series. There were of course some that weren’t impressed by the trailer as it’s not their thing, and that’s OK. To each their own.
But it was generally a positive reaction. There hasn’t been anything like THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS in the movies in quite awhile, so it’s refreshing to see something like this garner enthusiasm.
It really helped that the teaser trailer wasn’t confusing. When it threw out terminology that only fans of the series would recognize it explained what it meant and provided context and some killer action scenes.
A teaser trailer–especially one in the Young Adult category nowadays–serves as a first impression. And it was one hell of a first impression.
Have you showed the CITY OF BONES teaser trailer to any mundanes? What has been their reaction? Leave their reactions in the comments!

Showed my husband and niece. NOW they want to read the book!!!
The most fun introduction I’ve had was today when I finally convinced my mom to read the books. I told her all about how Jace had won the first annual YA Sisterhood Crushin’ Tournament and how Clary had won the first annual YA Sisterhood Tournament of Heroines (she and Katniss were the final two), then Jem beat Finnick Odair in a round of the second annual Crushin’ Tournament. She couldn’t understand how someone could beat Finnick, and she was intrigued by Jace and Clary’s wins. She now has to see for herself why all of Cassie Clare’s guys are so dreamy and how Clary is more hardcore than Katniss. My mom won’t be a mundane much longer.
I showed the trailer to my daughter and she thought it was “friggin awesome”. Now she is in love with Jamie too! As soon as school is done for the semester she wants to start reading COB! She can’t wait for the movie either. 🙂 🙂 🙂 YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have someone to discuss all the books with.
My friends were watching funny YouTube videos and then I made them watch it. I also made some family members watch it. I don’t know how, but it’s even better than I expected! I watch it alone by myself constantly.
I made my sister and all my friends watch it. And NOW all my friends want to read them, and I’m there rolling my eyes going “Oh Mundanes.”
My friends who didn’t read the books said that the teaser trailer looked good. They are looking forward to watch it with me next year! XD
My little brother loves the morta instruments. Still not showed to my cousins… will loved of course! And read…
Showed my mom and she loved it. Showed my friends and they were confused. I’m trying to get then=m to read the books but only one of my friends listened
I showed the teaser trailer to a friend and she was thrilled! Now she’s gonna buy the first three books. Another mundane converted to shadowhunter.
Yes, this is exactly what we all need to do. Its important that COB does well at the box office so that they will make the rest of the films, and make them with an adequate budget. Everyone needs to show at least 3 other people who are not already TMI fans, this trailer. My husband, who has not read the books, thought it looked promising.
I so agree! If it doesn’t go well (who am i kidding it’s gonna be awesome but still…) they might not make the other movies!!!!! NO!!!! THEY HAVE TO OR I’LL DIE FROM SADNESS!!!
I actually gave one of my friends the first three books for her birthday (I gave her my paperbacks because I wanted them in hardcover, don’t judge me!) . She didn’t have time to read them yet, but she thinks they will be awesome.
one of my friends who is a new fan loved the trailer(she is currently reading city of bones. I lent her my copy and she’s loving it so far and loves Jamie and Jace and lily). i really wished that they showed the trailer at the theatre i went to see Breaking Dawn. there were some trailers but there were way too many commercials. perhaps if they hadn’t shown as many, there would have been time. another friend seemed intrigued by the trailer
oh i loved everything, the moments between jace and clary, the action everything! and i’m even more in love with jame and jace now and lily is just perfect as clary, and so is robbie and jemima and the flamethrower was awesome.! Kevin you’re great too!
I actually talked my dentist into reading the books and I told her to be looking for the trailer online also.
My brother liked the trailer- although he’s not a big reader- he liked the action… and said ‘my kind of movie.’ What a twat … 😀
My husband hates how I fangirl so much about the TMI books and film. But I made him watch the trailer and said it looks “alright”. That means he really wants to watch it but doesn’t want to admit to me cause of all the jip he gives me for loving them so much. Think he really likes the action in it! 🙂
I made my mundane BFF so curious (as I fangirl like crazy) that she started reading CoB 2 weeks ago and she’s already reading CoA!! she says she loves Jace!! =D and Jamie too
I was so excited when I first saw the trailer. I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the whole trailer. 🙂 However, when I’ve showed my mom, she’d thought it was a little creepy. When I’ve showed my sister. She’d thought it was a horror movie. -.- Ugh…..
I’ve showed to anyone who will watch it, mundane or shadowhunter 😀 I love it that much and my mundane friends agree that it looks like it’s gonna be a great movie and they are considering reading the series and watching the movie when i go to see it (hopefully premiere night!) I’ve been hysterical and watching it everyday. My mundane friends think I’ve lost it, but my shadowhunter friends understand 😀
I showed my grandparents and my uncle and they thought it was awesome
Showed my mom, and she is currently in the process of reading the book!!! However, I showed the rest of the family who described it as sounding “alright”. (of course, they are all males, and can’t imagine that anything a girl would like a boy could actually like too… mundanes!) Bringing my laptop to school after the break and showing everyone…
I saw Breaking Dawn Pt. 2, and didn’t see the trailer! That was the part I was most excited about!
My Mum always known as much of a fan I am about these books and any other fantasy book I read. I always sit her on the sofa and watch movie trailers to get her view…..this was no different but she knew how excited I am for this movie – as I have no other fan to get all fangirl wiv me….my mum puts up with it! (she’s brilliant by the way!)
Anyways I show it to her – her reaction… she said “It’s good” and then she said “I didn’t realise it’ll be so scary”
I replied “It’s a realistic world mixed in with the mythical world – of course it’ll be scary!”
When I asked her in one word to describe in one word about the trailer – she sad “Intriguing” added with “I may want to watch this now”
*FANGIRL FANGIRL FANGIRL FANGIRL FANGIRL!*
I also showed this to a friend and her reaction was “Not gonna lie….It was F***ING AMAZING!!!” She wants to see this wiv me too and suggested making t-shirts with Cassie’s name on it when we see it!!!
SO COOL!!!!
I showed my sister. She doesn’t know the story and this was her reaction…. ” looks interesting. Good story, it has a scary feel to it.” But now I still need to get her more exited.
I had several people on Twitter say after seeing BD2; “Why have’nt I heard of Mortal Instruments? It looks awesome!” I kindly directed them to buy the first book in the series, knowing once the first book was read they’ll devoure the rest.
My best friend and I are always bragging and laughing about having already read the books before the other kids at school. Now, ever since the series was being called the “new Twilight” or “new Hunger Games”, all the popular kids at school have been reading the books and I just roll my eyes and am like ‘Whatever’. And my friend thinks I’m crazy cuz this series is the only thing I have ever been obsessed with. And btw did anyone else notice Robert Sheehan SHIRTLESS in the trailer?!?!?!?!?!
So i have one friend who doesnt like the male actors… I flip out everytime and almost kill her. Then i got my mom to watch the trailer and my dad so my my mom was
Mom: it actually looks really cool
Dad: it was a good trailer, ill go see it
Which are like hugggeee compliments comig from them and my sister whos little and hasnt read the books is obsesseddd with robert sheehan and she goes aroung saying MUNDANNNEEEE like jamie, and now my moms reading them and i got my friend to read them over the summer (:
