5 Questions concerning CLOCKWORK PRINCESS

This is not a drill. Repeat–this is not a drill. Clockwork Princess will hit stores TOMORROW and we still can’t believe how close it is. We want to read this book RIGHT NOW, and yet we’re not ready to say goodbye.

There are many questions fans have as they prepare to delve into the epic conclusion of Cassandra Clare’s The Infernal Devices, including these five questions:

1. What is Tessa?

It’s the question that the series has been building up to and one that has brought out the best in fans when it comes to theories. It’s clear that Tessa isn’t just an ordinary warlock–if she’s even one at all. In Clockwork Prince there is suggestion that Tessa’s mother was a Shadowhunter and her father a demon. Will pointed out that the offspring of a Shadowhunter and a demon would be a stillborn, and yet I wouldn’t doubt if that were false in Tessa’s case. Could Tessa be some Shadowhunter-Warlock hybrid? What is she really? And what does Mortmain what to do with her?

2. Who does Tessa choose?

There’s no denying that Tessa loves both Will and Jem, but where does her heart truly lie? Clockwork Prince ended with Tessa accepting Jem’s marriage proposal and Will left dying on the inside as he watches the girl that he loves with the boy that he loves. But it’s clear in some of the snippets that Cassie has shared that despite Tessa’s engagement to Jem that she still harbors feelings for Will. The ultimate love triangle will be resolved in the final installment and we have to wonder if Tessa will even up with either Will or Jem or end up alone?

3. Who lives and who dies?

With the battle between the Shadowhunters and Mortmain with his clockwork army, there are sure to be some casualties. The only people we know survive the series are Tessa, Magnus, Camille, Woolsey Scott and Ragnor Fell, as they each make an appearance in The Mortal Instruments at some point. The fate of the remaining characters in The Infernal Devices remains a nerve-racking mystery. We know Jem’s disease takes a turn for the worse in Clockwork Princess. Will he survive? Does Will pull a Sydney Carton and sacrifice himself for the woman he loves? And what about the other characters? That’s the question that will be on our minds throughout Clockwork Princess.

4. What happens with Mortmain’s clockwork army?

With Mortmain’s automatons aiming to wipe out the Shadowhunters, the grand finale is upon us. Will the Shadowhunters be able to stop Mortmain and his clockwork army? And at what cost? Will the outcome forever alter the Shadow World?

5. How do the events of Clockwork Princess  shape the future Shadow World, including The Mortal Instruments?

Cassandra Clare has said that the events of The Infernal Devices–notably Clockwork Princess–forever alter the Shadow World, including that in The Mortal Instruments. Reads the official synopsis: “If the only way to save the world was to destroy what you loved most, would you do it?” In the Clockwork Princess book trailer, Tessa’s response is “I would.” So it’s not a matter or “does something happen” but “what happens to forever alter the Shadow World?”
