Lily Collins is making the rounds in the U.K. for press on her latest film Stuck in Love (which hits U.K. theaters on June 14 and U.S. theaters on July 5) and the media cannot help but ask about her next project The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (which hits theaters on Aug. 21).

Empire, who recently saw some footage from City of Bones at a screening, spoke to Lily about the humor in the film, which Lily praised.

That’s what Cassie (Clare) wrote–the book with so much humor. That’s what different, I think from other trilogies or other series of books, is that there is this realness and humor to it. And Harald (Zwart), our director, really wanted to keep that there because a lot of what the fans love is the humor, and that’s what sets it apart.

Not making it a comedy, but making it have those comedic real elements to a fantasy world. Because if you take yourself too seriously as a full-on fantasy, sometimes an audience forgets that there’s a realness to the characters and I think those moments of laughter that break it up kind of make it more believable even if there are weird characters on screen that you’re  like–those aren’t real–but there’s humor there so it feels a bit more grounded. So I think he’s done a really great job of trying to keep some of that in there.

I’m so glad they are going to keep the humour, what sets Cassie’s writing apart are all those laugh out loud moments from Simon, Jace and Magnus TMI wouldn’t be the same without it. And we have two of the funniest guys in Hollywood with Jamie and Robert who will no doubt have no problem making us laugh.

I’m so glad they will be capturing the humor! I always laugh while I’m reading her books, I absolutely love the way the characters speak to each other, so witty/hilarious. It really does make all the other emotions we feel while reading more real. Because if characters can make you laugh, then when something bad happens, all the more you will want to cry!

It makes me so happy to see that the cast understands the book . It’s one thing to want to play a character because they are cool and because the movie will bring in lots of money and the role will bring you fame , but it’s a whole ther story to want to play a character because you adore them and you understand them . I agree with lily though . The fantasy aspect is what sets off our imagination , but it’s good to mix it with reality , so that we can connect and keep the story grounded , and every day wit/humour is a great way of doing that , so I’m glad to see that humor is a key factor in the movie!

another great invterview and the humor besides the action, and romancae and t and fnatasy is what i’m looking foward too! and sexy jace and snarky jace!

  7. This is what the director and scriptwriter needed to get right !! I think that is what I loved so much about the books the conversations the comebacks and jace’s sarcastic remarks were what set the books apart!! It’s what makes jace falling in love with Clary so amazing his sarcasm is his defence because the way he feels about her scares him !! So I hope it’s there …Jamie will play this perfectly!!!!

  8. I admit I am a bit worried that the director may get so wrapped up in the action that the humor will get lost. I hope Lilys right. I hope that Jace and Simon really let loose and have a snark-off or something. Simon is my favorite charater. His humor and loyalty really touched me as a reader, and I hope it all translates on screen.

  9. So technically, Jace will still be that stuck-up sarcastic ESPECIALLY towards Clary… And Alec, who did NOT like Clary when he first met her will be the same?! There is nothing wrong with that but okay,! whateves makes it bettr!
