Movie Monday #4: Church and Chairman Meow

We are just over a year away from the the theatrical release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

With some help from fellow ‘Mortal Instruments’ fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) we’ve teamed up for a new weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 4: Church and Chairman Meow

Alyssa, TMI Source: In book-to-film adaptations, some details tend to get left out as they don’t provide significance to the plot. I’m a little worried that Church and Chairman Meow are at risk of being written out by Hollywood. Fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ had similar concerns about Buttercup, but they were rewarded with a brief glimpse of the cat near the start of the film.

If Church and Chairman Meow make it into the movie I’d guess they’d make brief cameos, like Church wandering the halls of the Institute or Magnus holding Chairman Meow. Like Magnus, Church connects both ‘The Mortal Instruments’ and ‘The Infernal Devices’ and should a ‘Clockwork Angel’ movie happen it would be cool to have Church as a second link between the two series.

Amber, TMI Institute: After batting this question around a bit like good cat would do, I think it is possible that they will put Church and Chairman Meow in the movie. It’s a hard call. If it were between the two, I feel that Church is the cat that needs to be in the film. I feel he provides comic relief and possesses a certain human characteristic that is just as much a part of the institute as the Shadowhunters themselves. I think he is important to the story as is Chairman Meow because they are both so old and have seen so much. I’m not exactly sure where Cassie is leading us with these two cats in the book, but I thin they will ultimately be important to the end game. If there are multiple movies, which I believe undoubtedly there will be, we will need the cats in the film.

Katie, Mundie Moms: Church and Chairman Meow…. YES! I really, really hope they are included in the movies. I know they’re not key players in the book (or are they….), but I think they definitely need to be added to the movie. For one, Church is in both series, and if they ever make a ID series movie (crosses fingers), I’d hope they include him. He’s one of the few characters who crosses into both series. Chairman Meow after is the reason why Magnus was hosting a party when Clary and Jace meet him for the first time. On the flip side, I would understand if they didn’t include these two characters, but I really, really hope they do. I want to see them on the big screen.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: Church and Chairman Meow. As much as I would love to see them in ‘City of Bones’ I’m afraid that they could fall victim to Hollywood editing. All book to film adaptations must be cut down to fit into a movie.
Now, Constantin Films does own the film rights to Clare’s Infernal Devices series. I love the subtle crossovers between the series’ and that includes Church. If and when ‘Clockwork Angel’ becomes a movie it would be a real treat to the fans if Church’s appearance was carried through in the films.

Tita, TMI News en Espanol: Ohhhh our little *biter* friend is going to be in the movie for sure! I mean, hello? Church is a mystery of the series! And not only in TMI! So yes, Church is going to be in the movie for sure. Chairman… I also think it’s going to be in the movie as well, I mean, Why did Magnus through the party in City of Bones? Because of his cat! LOL Maybe we’ll see Chairman only a few secs, but I guess they are not going to exclude him :)

  1. I think they could cut them out, but it will only have to take like 2 seconds to include them in the movie. they don’t know yet if they will be key figures (would be cool though :) but they could make magnus why he’s throwing the party (chairman meow) and maybe see clary or someone from the instute follow church. If they will make an ID movie, it would be a shame to miss church. they shouldn’t make the same mistake as many book adaptions have *cough*eragon*cough* which is excluding characters who are in the end very important. (bdw, i think eragon was a terrible book adaption, and even if they did have enough money for the rest of the series, it would be impossible because they cut out solembum)

  2. I think that Church should be included in the movies if they are going to make the ID series as well, with Chairman Meow though. They don’t have to put him in the movie because even the scene where Magnus Bane throws a party for his cat, Chairman Meow doesn’t necessarily need to make a cameo appearance though I would love to see them on film!

  3. If they do make an ID movie (they have to!), Church would be very important. He is a link between the series, has comic relief, and reveals a lot about Jem. He was willing to risk his life in order to take the extra time of saving him, and later it shows how Church bites everyone except Jem, who he loves. I also think that Chairman Meow will be in the movie, becasue he is important to Magnus. He’s the reason for the party, and even though they could change that, there is the part in the extra scene where Magnus says that he doesn’t date anyone his cat doesn’t like. Having Alec bond with the cat also shows how close he and Magnus are. Plus, he is also comic relief. Keep the cats!

  4. They could easily fit them into the movie and not take away from any precious screen-time by just having both cats casually hanging out in the background or sitting on someone’s lap during a conversation, in both the scenes that take part inside the Institute as well as Magnus’ loft :D

  5. they kind of have to put chairman meow AND church into the movie. because in CoLS, doesnt simon go to save chairman meow from azeazal? so without the cat, that would never happen

  6. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
