Empire On Location: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES

From Empire Magazine (March 2013)

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is featured in the March 2013 issue of Empire Magazine.

The folks at Empire visited the Toronto set last year during filming of the pivotal Pandemonium scene and spoke with Lily Collins (Clary), Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace) and director Harald Zwart.

Here’s the article from Empire:

Empire is never more at home than when out clubbing with hordes of nubile, pleasure-seeking neophytes who hop around the dance-floor like bespangled rabbits. So we blend right in as we enter a shadowy nightclub that takes centre stage for a tense moment in City Of Bones, Harald Zwart’s adaptation of the first entry in Cassandra Clare’s fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments.

We’re more than happy playing the wallflower, watching as a tattooed and hooded Jamie Campbell Bower moves through the billowing dry ice with a look of menace upon his rather lovely face. Also witnessing the scene is the story’s heroine, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), whose life at this moment changes forever as she’s introduced to the hidden realm of the Shadowhunters, where werewolves roam Manhattan and faeries caper unseen in Central Park. Campbell Bower’s glowering Jace Wayland will be her guide.

“Jace has got a big of a chip on his shoulder,” says Campbell Bower. “I see him with the vulnerability of a young River Phoenix and the potential anger of James Hetfield.” Collins, meanwhile, who played a more fairy tale-style Snow White in last year’s Mirror Mirror, says she couldn;t be more excited. “I was a fan cast as Clary,” she says. “Clary’s a young girl I feel very close to and thanks to Harald, while we acknowledge it’s a fantasy world, it is also a world that feels very real.”

The appointment of Zwart, fresh off The Karate Kid, prompted public concerns from Cassandra Clare about his inexperience in fantasy, but the Norwegian director shrugs them off. “They had other people attached who were more specialised in making creature movies,” he says, “but for me the creatures are a metaphor to trigger certain emotions. This is Clary’s journey.”

awesome article though jace is more than glowering, he’s a tortured at first who really cares for his family and comes to love Clary and will do anything for her(he’s protective) and has wit, arrogance, and sarcasm! and he has his looks and is quite romantic and a great fighter and a special shadow hunter
