‘MORTAL INSTRUMENTS’ cast talks filming ‘CITY OF ASHES’ in Toronto

City of Ashes

In a new article from The Star, stars of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan and Kevin Zegers, along with Constantin Film’s Kat Kleiner, discussed filming The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes in Toronto at the end of September.

“It’s wicked that we’re green-lit for movie two. Green-lighting any sequel is a gamble. But we have made a great film and it’s wicked that we get to go back and make possibly another great film,” said Jamie Campbell Bower, who stars as demon-battling Shadowhunter Jace Wayland.

“It’s very rare that a sequel will go into (pre-)production when the first film is not even out yet. It’s given us a huge boost of confidence,” added Lily Collins, who plays the film’s heroine, Clary Fray.

“We are confident in the strength of this franchise and fans are extremely loyal, committed and supportive. We are excited about the opening of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and look forward to the sequel . . . which begins filming next month in Toronto. We are knee-deep in prep,” said Kat Kleiner, head of international marketing and publicity for Constantin Film.

Lily also talked about what separates Clary from other YA heroines.

“It’s not a romance; it’s an action adventure where there is romance. But she (Clary) is not defined by men and I think some of the other franchises have been all about the romance. That doesn’t draw in a new audience, especially with men. You want to draw in the dudes as much as the girls,” Collins said.

“I love that (Clary) is this normal, vulnerable, confused girl but at the same time a bad-ass, strong, empowered young woman and that mixture of the two in a heroine was for me the ultimate dream to play,” Collins said.

Lily, Robbie and Jamie talked about their experience filming City of Bones in Toronto last year.

“That kind of gave us our first taste of the fandom. It was just amazing. We hadn’t even shot the movie and they (fans) were already there to support us,” Collins said.

“My preconception of the city, having never been here, was that it was a little plain Jane. Is it a little bit closed after 10 p.m.? But I just had a whale of a time,” said Irish actor Robert Sheehan, who plays Simon.

“I love the city. It was dope. We had an amazing time,” added Campbell Bower.

Kevin Zegers talked about the physical challenges he faced filming City of Bones.

“It was like shooting two films. You shoot the character stuff, but you have this other whole aspect because Harald wanted us to do all of our stuff, including fighting. It was non-negotiable,” Zegers said.

“We had to learn to not just fight but fight well . . . and you’ve got to look a certain way,” he added.

  1. The first three books may not be defined by romance, but I don’t think that can be said about the fourth and fifth books ^^

    • really? my impression is that the romance/connection intensifies as the books go on. I think that there are other stories to be told as the series progresses (Simon, Maia, etc.) but Clary and Jace are the main focus.

so true and we get to see more insight and other pesecpetives from siomon, izzy and many others (espically from simon) as the series progresses in addtional to jace and clary 😀 which is awesome

I wonder who’s playing Maia. And if I’ll EVER get an opportunity to audition for Maia’s Role… I want it so badly… though,I’m only 12yrs. old.

  5. I wonder if there’s Maia…. If I had an opportunity I would audition for her role!!! 😮 😀 I want that badly to happen! Oh,and pretty please follow my blog…I’ll keep you posted!

that’s awesome you’re a huge tmi fan and that you want to audtion, but you’res till young. there is some sexuality between maia and jordan in city of lost souls, so unfornately you’re not quite the age for the role.

Or maybe you can just keep your hate to yourself, as maybe some or many people might love the movie.

    • lol, yes well we all know people don’t do that. I just try to ignore the trolls on any book fansite. It really isn’t worth it. Fans are fans. Trolls are trolls.

  7. COA is my favorite of all the books! cant freaking wait for the movie.. im wondering if they do the third book that is a long one and it`s the end of one main plot are they gonna do it in one movie¿? or split it into two¿?

    • teamedwardjace // August 20, 2013 at 3:59 PM // Reply

hello male shadowhunter! there’s actually five books(one more next year) so they split some books in two maye

      • I know there are 5 but the first 3 are about Valentine and that`s the main plot of them then there comes the other half that is about Sebastian, that is why im asking the third movie can easily be used as a END for the TMI Franchise cause Valentine dies and Sebastian Dies (supposedly)… but at the end all depends on how much money the movie can make so lets hope is enough to make the 6 books

You trolls are such a miserably pathetic bunch it’s almost funny.
Have fun hating while choking on that heaping pile of shit on your chest you mention and thanks for stopping by!

joy you rock! and your comment makes me laugh! it’s so true!

    • Hey! 🙂 Seriously girl don’t waste your time feeding trolls, it’s just SO not worth it being worked by them and you did. You really shouldn’t apologize to anyone about what you like or who you are. Just leave them be the douchebags they are and have fun with their bileful comments. It’s really amusing if you see it that way. Trust me. *points at screenname* I find hilarity in everything. 😉

    • hey joy,
yeah not wasting my tiem by getting into any more arguments! thank you for you sweet comment and i don’t apologize for what i like. there are some things i’m working on about myself but yeah this person was a troll. they are being douchebags though in a way this is kind of amusing lol. also don’t apologize for what you like or who you are 🙂

  9. I know this has nothing to do with the article, but if someone could answer my question that’d be great. I don’t remember if this was answered in the books or not, but can Tessa be marked with runes?

    • It gets answered in CP2, yes. She can be marked but she can’t actually bear the runes, they are just getting erased.
      Here’s the actual passage :
“…healing runes upon Tessa, but the runes had simply sunk into her skin and vanished, like words written in water. Charlotte reached out now to touch Tessa’s collarbone, where the rune had been inked. Her skin was hot to the touch.”
      🙂

Her demon blood cancels them out. They have no effect on her.

  10. did you even see the first movie? or did you just come here to troll? it seems like did an amazing job and so many people who have been lucky for advance screening have really like it which includes fans and nonreaders. lily who we adore was a huge fan before and read the books as has the rest of the cast reading city of bones., the romance does intensify around city of fallen angel and city of lost souls, and while it’s its an important aspect it’s not the only major thing as there stills lots of fantasy, action, and humor with various otehr themes so many of us are excited, and while you are entitled to your opinion in a sense , perhaps it is you are biased as perhaps you’ll never like book to screen adaptions. the acting is great if you ask many of us. and also tmi is better than twilight. i still love twilight but tmi and hunger games are better. and its ok if you don’t like twilight, but that does not give the right to insult the fans. yes each fandom has those who are jerks but they are not for that way for liking it its because how they can act. i am passionate about tmi but i would never insult someone for liking something different even if i didn’t feel the same way. (espically sense my own music taste is all the over map and i love fantasy, horror, sci, action roamnce and enjoy comedy. some people have stupid reasons for disliking something. by the way some of the things you said, are inaccurate. the cast and crew have read the series or city of bones and and will read the rest as times goes on and are keeping up to date. it’s one thing to evaluate it from a movie review, but are just saying a bunch of i hate this with very poorly explained and infactual arguments. also critics aren’t always right. i didn’t want to see the chipmunk movie a year ago but i gave it a chance and i liked it.

yes i am protective and care about the cast. i may not be the best person all the time but i have intelligence, passion, and am hardworking who knows her own flaws and strives to do better especially with showing those people she knows she cares by showing shes cares.

i know you don’t care but you have knocked a major hornets nest with passionate fans and people even if they’re wary or didn’t like it will dislike your argument and for insulting other people. yes some people deserve the insults in a way, if they are mean people (so such comments as calling the person a dbag is relevant. yes i called bieber that but would never waste an entire paragraph saying why dislike him. others may still love it and really don’t care what you think .

keep your negativity to yourself or if you find a better way to say it like i wasn’t a fan. (that’s if you did see it or you can simply say you di don’t want to see which you are then missing out)if you didn’t like what we have to say, well just remember you wasted a post with your stupid negativity. i am by no means condoning a hate group or harassment but the way you expressed it or your opinion will get you into trouble.

by the way lily was a huge fan before the movie and jamie was and continues to be a fan. also it got a positive review and many nonreaders liked it.

anyways i really disagree with you and there are so many things in another way i would like to say, because you are being a jerk but i decided to be firm but but polite.

she is part shadowhunter or nelphim but also part downworlder e.g warlock. so from what i can remember, no 🙂

  12. I really love Maia Roberts character in the book City of Ashes, and I would really love to know if there will be auditions for her role in Los Angeles. So if someone knows when and where there will be auditions, could you be kind enough to share the info? Thanks in advance.

  13. teamedwardjace // August 20, 2013 at 4:21 PM // Reply

so enjoy being an exasperating troll. by the ways how does , having that “heaping pile of exrement feel.(ok is wear too) lol does it hurt or smell really bad? also, it seems to be me and many others, that they stay faithful while enchaning those parts and adding extra awewosme bits. some may have been shrotend while still being awesome. it seems like too in parts, the very esscence and quotes are there but perhaps the location may be changed a bit. also not every part in the book made it in as it’d be like 5 hours!! (e.g.every scene with eric )

  14. It doesn’t look like it was troll, or they would have come back and continued to taunt people. Probably just a disgruntled fan. Some fans are disappointed with changes (in any movie), we all know that. And they have have the right to voice them.
So let them say what they feel, we’ll do the same thing.

  15. The first movie was entrancing, just as the book was. Im eagerly awaiting more news on book 2’s movie. My only hope is that its as entrancing as this one.
*scurries off to re read the series*
    – Teen fan & fangirl

  16. I really hope they make the whole series! This was better then twilight by 100%! Im so exited!

  17. I live in Arizona, and if I had the chance to audition for Maia it would be a dream come true! It’s difficult for me to know about any upcoming casting for the movie being from this area, if anyone has any information about casting for her role I would greatly appreciate it! Thank youuuu 🙂

  18. i loved the movie to be totally honest i went and seen it twice i even bought a poster and the soundtrack and i plan to buy the movie when it comes out to i haven had a chance to read the books yet but i plan to buy them soon to read them i’m really interested in them and i’m a big .fan
