Report: Could production on ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes’ begin this year?

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" Mexico City - Red CarpetCould production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes begin this year? According to Yahoo Singapore — and Godfrey Gao — that sounds like the case.

The Taiwanese-Canadian star also revealed that he will be flying to the US after filming concludes, to begin the sequel to last year’s “The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones”.

Aside from reprising his role as Magnus Bane for the second instalment, “The Mortal Instrument: City of Ashes”, the actor also revealed that he has received other offers from other Hollywood production, and expressed his hopes to be able to be involved in as many as them.

Keep in mind that nothing is confirmed. This is merely a report. But regardless, it’s exciting to hear anything about City of Ashes!

Fingers crossed that we see City of Ashes sooner rather than later, I can’t wait for the Seelie Court scene. But I really hope that Godfrey Gao gets a few acting lessons and reads a few of the Bane Chronicles to understand the character a bit better this time round

People are being wayyyy to critical of his role in the movie, i think he did a great job , he was barely in the first movie anyways , and in the scenes he did portray him EXACTLY like the FIRST book read him out to be. you guys are all crazy to think otherwise.

  3. Well, it’s about time! I was starting to worry they’d cancelled it again. Eep! I’m excited now. Day made. Day made!

And here’s hoping that CoA goes over better than CoB did. Though I didn’t mind the changes to CoB, and understand why they made some of them (and even liked a lot of them, and didn’t think the movie differed THAT much from the book), it probably would be best if they stayed as true to the book as possible (that way a lot of fans don’t get offended and sabotage it’s success again).

Also, though I adored Jamie’s portrayal of Jace, I guess it could be good to see him be “less emo”, as people would call it, and say things like, “Just dropping in,” funnily like he did in the book.

Also, CoA is the time and place to introduce the Clave, its workings, its corruptions, the other characters, and to develop all the characters and their interactions with each other, explain things better, etc. So let’s hope they deliver…

But most of all: market it better! I didn’t see much for CoB at all when it came out. That can’t happen again. But get kids in school to read the books, have the books as the forefront at book stores, promote the movie on The Tonight Show and the like, etc.

And the trailer should also be better, and tell what the movie’s actually about. I really didn’t know at all what to make of the CoB trailer (and I’d read all the books!).

And do NOT market this as Twilight again. People hate that series now, and now want “dark, epic, edgy, and tragic stories”. Cater to that. And by doing so, make Valentine less of a cliché villain, please.

I guess… as much as it pains me to say this (as I love TMI because it has so many different themes), advertise TMI as one thing, and stick with it. Use quotes from the book, like, “Love Makes Us Liars” as the tagline and that type of thing. Also use positive reviews about the books to promote it.

And don’t compare this to anything else, either. People don’t want copies of things. They want new. If you compare it to something, they’re just going to rip it apart as a bad knock-off. But most of all:

And this time, actually mention some of the big name stars, have more of them, and SAY THAT IT’S FROM THE PRODUCER OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY. That will bring in a LOT of good attention.

So, imho, advertise this series more like how HP was handled (but do NOT compare it to HP, unless you’re using the book review by Holly Black, I believe, which says “reminiscent of the Harry Potter series, and that’s high praise!”), and make sure that CoA stuff is everywhere.

Make sure it’s seen as something for teens and older. Not tweens.

And maybe talk about the good themes in it, have fans talk about it, have sweepstakes, and midnight premiere’s: that sort of thing.

And I can’t believe I’m about to say this (as I think it’s rude, and I hate how people have treated Jamie, but I guess you have to appear to the masses), but… make Jamie “hotter”. People complained way too much about him being “unattractive” in CoB. And while I thought he looked great (and something like this doesn’t even matter, especially compare to the acting, imo) I’m tired of people hating on the movie for a stupid reason like that, so just give him bangs or something. Then I think he’ll be even more attractive than he already is=)

Anyway, I’m so excited about this, and I can’t wait to see the film. I’m sure it’s going to be great:) And it’s great that Godfrey Gao’s still attached (though I hope Magnus is a little more… flamboyant this time around). Here’s hoping the rest of the lovely cast is all coming back, too. I just love them:) I wonder what CC has to say about this good news…

    • If they make it for Tweens the older Veiwers might avoid it. Make it a trilogy for everyone. Thankyou!

    • I totally agree with all of this!!!! I hope someone important sees it haha.

    • I agree with you on this! I love the books and actually thought the movie was ok. I do think it should have had more air time in the media to promote it, esp in the US. I am currently trying to get my daughter to read it because she wants to watch it. I think she needs to understand Jeremiah and the Bros before that though as he creeped me out, but in a good way! I think the cast did great with what was given to them and the only part I didn’t like was that Valentine came to the institute, I really wanted to see his hideout. I hope they stick closer to the book and advertise the same as HP as well, without comparing of course. HP was great at transforming to the screen, Twilight not so much. I really hope CoA comes out though, I really wanna see the fairies.

    • I like ur ideas on the advertisement stuff! I agree COB was defiantly lacking with the advertisement! Most people I talked had never heard of the movie! With Divergent and Catching Fire those ads where everywhere and they made a killing in the box office!

With Jamie, I was on the fence when I saw the trailer on whether or not I was OK with him playing Jace, but I have to admit, after watching the whole movie, I couldn’t picture anyone else playing him. One problem with Jamie is that they made him lose a bunch of weight to play Jace, which was completely unnecessary. They made Jace look anorexic! (Jamie, too, if I’m being honest) And they made Jamie look emo! Jace is dangerous when he wants to be, sweet to the right people, and sarcastic 24/7. So with that said, get new writers!! I don’t think the cast was the problem with this movie (even thought that’s what I thought before), I think it was the writing.

  9. I really hope they start soon!!!!!!

  10. YAY!!!! I cant wait until they start filming!!!!!

  11. very well said shanna..

    • Wow. Thank you so much… I’m glad you think so. I was a little worried I’d gone overboard, or that maybe I was wrong on some things–or people wouldn’t agree–but glad to know I wasn’t totally off base. Thank you:)

  12. So are they filming in Canada or the USA?

  13. yes carnt wait

  14. claceforever // March 22, 2014 at 6:12 AM // Reply

Please please please. I am so confused that hardly anyone in my school has even heard of the mortal instruments!!! With it being a movie, more people should love it. I hope CoA does better than CoB, maybe that’ll encourage people to read the books.

    • I know, right? It’s a crime that TMI isn’t more well known. Imo, it’s one of the best book series–and series, in general–out there. I think it’s definitely better than some series -cough- The Vampire Diaries -cough- and it even came out before things like THG and Divergent, so here’s hoping CoA gets TMI the attention it deserves.

  15. Where would they film in the us? not new York because that is to expensive . I think there still filming in Canada because its cheaper

  16. I hope CoA will happen. I want to see the story continued so bad! And CoB was good, my only complaint would be that sometimes it felt a little rushed and full of information but overall I really liked it and it would be great to see the world more developed. And who knows, maybe the 2nd film will be so successfull that they do all the TMI books.
    Fingers corssed!

    • Yep, Hannah, here’s hoping. Though if they (sadly) can’t do all the movies, I hope they at least finish the first trilogy:)

      • I’m honestly only interested in the first trilogy being made into movies; I don’t care about the last 3.

  17. OMG YES I’VE BEEN WANTING MORE NEWS ON COA AND YESH YESH I’M SO EXCITEDDDDD
    asdfghjklpoyutewqxzbm,

  18. I’m not sure how they’re going to fix what they did in City of Bones to make it true to the series and City of Ashes, let alone if I want to see it. City of Bones was a huge disappointment. They changed too much and left too much out. There are SO many plot holes. Valentine leaves with the cup in the CoB book, which leads to the events that took place in CoA. How are they gonna fix that without making some huge event out of it? Clary and Simon are supposed to DATE in the next movie yet in the movie they made up and decided to stay friends. They never mention faerie in the first movie where as they are OBVIOUSLY a big part of the second movie. The big battle at the end of the City of Bones movie was so UNNECESSARY where as the battle at Renwicks’s in the book could have taken ten minutes in movie form, tops. What’s up with Clary and putting her hand in front of things and suddenly they bend to her will. That is NOT what runes do and that is not Clary’s power. She can create new runes, not use them to rearrange her house. They could have used precious time to develop the characters and explain the story better. The narrative was cheesy and predictable, especially with Clace. They gave away the revelation that was supposed to be given in the third movie. I don’t even….to be honest it’s like they didn’t even WANT to make the sequels and decided to stuff all three books into one movie.

They gave us teenybopper crap and left out all the morals out that made me love the books in the first place. I don’t see how they’re gonna stay true to the books when they’ve already ruined most of the series.

*** I also don’t believe that a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL, or however old she was, could kick her SHADOWHUNTER FATHER, trained for years and years, into the portal. He would stumble at best.

  19. HUGE MISTAKE!!! The people have spoken and it is loud and clear. Learn to listen and learn.

  20. i am not that exited as before, i mean there are A LOT of things that i want the next movie to change and improve on what the first one has failed. first of all, the director, someone with a little more experience than the diary of a whimpy kid and agent cody banks. second, improve of acting skills please!!! and when i say that i refer specially to lily collins, also magnus bane; and little more of participation for him. and jamie campebell bower, he was not bad but not enought to be good, i mean i didnt saw enought arrogancy, cockyness and sense of humor. his jokes were said in a very serious tone to be taken as jokes, and didnt laugh at all, only if simon was there to lighten up the room. and obviouly to be more true to the book, because the first half of the movie was ok, but right after that pathetic kiss scene everything went down.
i am very surprised they are taking the risk to make a second movie, because the box office was awful and its going to be very difficult now to make a good first impression with this movie.
still, i wish for the best

  21. Yeah I have to agree with you guys

  22. completely agree with Casey’s comment 100%, cob was a major let down, and it wasn’t just “grumpy old critics who’ve never read the books” that didnt like it, as many people who defended the movie said. let’s be real, it was utter crap, and they have a lot to fix if they’re gonna convince me to see coa, they just changed so much, idk why ppl keep saying they didnt. it doesnt make u less of a fan if u say u hated the movie or rlly disliked it

  23. Great news! Very Excited!

  24. Normally I’m very picky about movie adaptions *looks at book collection* You know who you are… But I was very happy with COB! Yeah there were some changes…. but the thing with the changes is, they made them work.

  25. YES PLEEEAASSE ! i don’t care that they didn’t make the first movie of the series good enough! it doesn’t really even get good until COG! omg this make me happy c:

  26. I’m really hoping we’ll get it, I think if they could manage to at least make the three first books in the series, I’d be pleased. There needs to be some sort of actual end, even though COB’s end was changed to be more like a conclusion in case they didn’t make sequels. I really miss this fandom!

  27. As Jace would Say “Have a little Faith.”

  28. I cannot WAIT until there is more official news about CoA!!
Unlike, most of you I actually started reading the entire series BECAUSE of the movie (which I barely happened to catch once it was on tv.. Hello Constantin you need to advertise better!). I can see where die-hard fans would be upset at certain aspects of the plot line in CoB but come on, give the guys a break you cannot nit-pick on every single thing. It’s an ADAPTATION. Yes, the screenwriter, producers, and director should have stayed as close to the book plot line as possible.. and they may have made an error in sending Clary off still in possession of the cup but other than bigger issues like that I think that CoB was amazing simply because of the actors involved. If you watch ANY of the interviews and press that they did you’ll see 1. How much time and effort they put into training and research on their characters 2. How to adapt that research into a 2 hour movie (Jace is a very complicated hunk of man Jamie couldn’t possibly portray what a 500 some odd page book can explain in depth and detail.) 3. How Jamie and Lily fought to have the scenes go in a different direction because they read all of the books. and 4. How much Cassie supported the crew and how hard it is to make every single fan happy. It’s impossible to nail every single persons image in their head of how things should go. With that said, I am so excited to see how they’ll change those aspects that they did screw up on. A seriously revised script (and some more character research on Godfrey’s part for Magnus) and marketing is what will make CoA great. And btw Jamie does not need to be “hotter” (although gold contacts would have added the cherry) he was specifically trying to create a new image in the industry of what it is to be “attractive” (no Hollywood look/steroid status muscles or the idea of striving to be “perfect”) Sorry this is long- I’m just slightly obsessed with TMI! Counting down until May 27!!!!

    • I absolutely agree with you! With everything! I read the book because I heard that there was going to be a movie adapted from this series (a series I must admit, I never heard of). This movie is the reason I got introduced to this amazing Shadowhunter world. City of Bones is a very complicated book, the whole series is and I understand that not everything could be added. I just really agree with you! Of course City of Ashes would need better advertising because I hardly saw a trailer on TV (I saw it only twice) and I gotten to know about it because my sister watched the trailer one day (because the film look very interesting and new) and told me about it. The cast was perfect because they really put their full effort on it. The only problem is the marketing and the production trying to make it look like “Twilight”. I LOVE the movie (even though the ending was changed…and I have an idea in how that may be fix, the next movie could just make Clary mess up, like she mixed up the cups and realize that she actually gave the real cup to Valentine). Mmm, all I wanted to say is how much I agree with your statement on everything! 🙂

    …………….

  34. I’m very excited. I’ve probably watched the movie about 100 times since I got it. And I’ve read all the books multiple times. The point is, to the people that think the changes are awful, it is an adaptation. Not every single little detail will be put in because then it’d be a 5 hour movie. They have 2 hours at best to get in all the important details. Plus the changes are things they wanted to add in to make it more interesting. They’re making partially their own story, adding in things they think will make fans laugh or go “oh that’s cool!” As for Magnus, I love him. He’s so F-ing awesome, exactly what I imagined him to be. I really hope they do this movie.

  35. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your site?

  38. this has been the last news ive heard about CoA and its already may 2015, so this was literally months ago. Now, there’s been news going around that they’ll make a TV series instead of the movie and theyre saying that there will be recasting but nothing is confirmed yet. If this does happen and if the movie IS cancelled again, it would just be a total disappointment. I was really looking forward to seeing lily and jamie play clary and jace on the sequel and i think they portrayed their characters so well that I couldnt imagine anyone else playing those characters and it would be a shame if they would do a recast on the whole thing.

In my opinion, the movie didnt go so well with the gross incomes and the sales ’cause they lacked better promotion. There wasnt really mainstream ads or big media guestings that took place, they did interviews, yes, but those interviews werent aired on daytime television where a huge population of televiewers would be watching… instead, they were very poorly published and most of the people wouldnt reeally know that those interviews existed cause they were barely even spread out. They should have been in talk show after talk show doing promotions, they should have been in billboards, they should have been advertised in tv or in social media sites, theyre marketing shouldve been better ’cause truth be told, ive never even heard of TMI until I went to the theater to catch a movie and had nothing better to see so we watched TMI with no other choice and I have to say, i didnt regret anything. CAuse after seeing the movie, I just fell in love with it and I read the series and fell in love with the books as well… but anyways, my point is that ive never even heard of TMI and never really knew it existed if I hadnt went to that movie theater… and until now, most of the people I know hasnt even heard of The movie nor the book.

Its trully sad to think about this movie being cancelled and not being turned to a film cause it has so much potential. I literally believe that if this had better marketing and promotion, it could literally be the next fiction craze. The cast was perfect as well, so I hope theyll stay the same and that this movie will have the big box office break it deserves cause it literally can be epic if written and planned out well.
