New (and scary) synopsis for ‘City of Heavenly Fire’

Shadowhunters all over the world are counting down the days until City of Heavenly Fire hits book stores on May 27 – less than 50 days! – and fans can now read a new (and scary) synopsis, which was published on Cassandra Clare’s official website.

Ready, Shadowhunters?

In the long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Dark Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris  — but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee — even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned . . .

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the world in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

Who else is freaking out, especially because of the aforementioned betrayal? Who do you think will turn against our favorite Nephilim? Sound off in the comments!

You can still pre-order signed copies of City of Heavenly Fire at Books Of Wonder.

  1. hahaha I am so not prepared for this *uncontrollable sobbing*

  2. JaShar Hawkwell // April 10, 2014 at 10:29 AM // Reply

I knew that they were going to have to face Sebastian but reading this, I am very fearful for how this story will end.

  3. I don’t have any idea how the betrayer is, but imo either Magus or Alec are going to die!

  4. f**k…*screams uncontrollably*

  5. This is not okay! Not okay AT ALL!!!!

  6. I think Magnus will turn against them. Freaking out!

  7. I’m so excited!! But this summary seems very all over the place. I hope the book isn’t like that! Nevertheless I cannot wait! 🙂

  8. OMW! Goosebumps!!!

I’m elated but terrified too. Who betrays them? Snippets possibly point to clary being temporarily brainwashed but maybe it’s amatis?

    • It sounded to me like clary was brainwashed to believe a completely different version of her and Sebastian’s childhood. Like, he’s her brother and he’s always taken care of her, and stuff like that. And something about him having green eyes. But I haven’t read the book, so I dont know for sure.

  10. ohmygODNOOOOOOOOO

  11. yep, i knew they were going to go to the demons realm! and that betrayal could it be the Seelie Queen?

    • I agree on the Seelie Queen. That was my first guess too.

      • it has to be her, i cant see anyone else betraying them and The Seelie Queen has made pretty clear that she will go with anyone. She already sent Melliorn to Jonathan and i think she si the one falling for him

  12. The waiting is going to be the death of me , and highly doubt Magnus would betray them , and plus he is ashamed to admit who his father is ……… maybe its Maia or Jordan they aren’t mentioned in the list of people who flee either .

  13. All I’m asking for is a happy ending to my favorite book series of all time! I know there will be some upsets along the way but please Cassandra don’t break my heart into a million pieces

  14. By the Angel, this book is going to be the death of me.

  15. Oh god, I’m scared now….

  16. Idk but I can’t wait

  17. I have a feeling it’s going to be Robert Lightwood. He is kin to Benedict Lightwood after all and look how he ended up.

  18. Is it bad that betrayal doesn’t freak me out? It happens. I’m betting it’s Magnus who betrays the Shadowhunters. He is after all already starting to distance himself from them.

    • I don’t think it will be magnus he’s a loyal person I think Clary or Jordan or maia because Cassandra Clare said Maia will have a big story line in city of heavily fire and the dark artificials

    • Magnus distanced himself because of his father, who is a Prince of Hell and a possible threat to the Nephilim. He could be deceived, yes, but I’m keeping my tabs open for more characters that could.

    WHAT THE HECK

  21. MAN I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE. I THINK THAT THE BETRAYAL MIGHT BE CLARY BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.

  22. I swear this book will be the death of me, I’m dying

  23. I can’t. I just.

What the actual fuck was that. I’m glad we got it but now I’m just even more terrified than before. Shit.

  24. nervous. and who could the betrayal be I was not expecting that… maybe a blackthorn because Julian did have to speak with the mortal sword hmm IDK so freaked

  25. OMG OMG OMG OMG! Ugh…. Death…. destruction…. love sacrificed…. DEMON REALMS!?!?!?!? So excited and so scared at the same time!

I think its clary who betrays everyone which would explain the picture of her and her brother sitting together, but obviously it’s probably not on purpose and she is being mind controlled.

  30. JessaForever // April 11, 2014 at 6:54 AM // Reply

“Where no Shadowhunter has set foot before”? Is that the unknown place?!?!? OMG WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!AAAAGH I CAN’T WAIT.

  31. Quite sure Jocelyn is the betrayer. Cassie mentioned Jocelyn will interact with Jonathan quite a lot and I really never trusted that woman

    • JessaForever // April 11, 2014 at 9:32 AM // Reply

Yeah. I kinda hate Jocelyn a bit because of how she treated Jace. Like he was Valentine, and as if it was his fault that he was raised by Valentine. TBH I won’t be surprised if it was Jocelyn, but I think Clary would be devastated.

      • Jace Herondale // April 13, 2014 at 8:24 PM //

        Exactly what I was thinking.

      • WOAO really that’s the most fu**ed thing to say, she had all the rights to act like that, she didnt know Jace before, how would you react if a man that you were in love with did something bad to your kids and then that man returns and tries to kill everyone? plus he says he has another kid and that one is in love with you daugther?…. would you trust someone you just met just cause he is love with her? please dont lie to me and tell me you will be fine with it….

    • If Anything she will be with Jonathan is to kill him, not to be with him, at least he makes her drink from the infernal cup… really you dont trust Jocelyn how?

  32. Wow. Pretty much says what I have already deducted about this book. Pretty good synopsis.

  33. This is going to be awesome! Can’t wait to get my hands on this book even though I’m very anxious at the same time. #bittersweet

I also think that Robert is the traitor. I mean, why he returned to NY?
Am I the only one who thinks it´s possible that Magnus will sacrifie himself? Maybe he asks his father for help in the final battle and in return he has to become a full demon without any mortal feelings and memories.
I also think that one of the main teenagers are going to die. CC says that the REMAINING maincast would the over 20 in TDA and that´s why she created new heroes.

  35. O my God!!!

  36. She said that they would go somewhere that was talked about before, but no one has ever been there.

  37. *dies* I am definitely not ready for this.

  38. By all that is good and holy…..what in the world was that? I am so not ready for this book, geez … betrayal really WTF. I wonder who it could be??/???? I mean come on clary, really? but then again we do have that snippet of her not knowing who Sebastian is and then the picture with him and her on the chair like looking thrones………. and after that we get the whole “Love will be sacrificed” and since Magnus is not even motioned, I think it has to do with izzy and Simon or maybe izzy dies or something or it could be Simon, I really don’t know. BY THE ANGEL Cassandra Clare are you trying to shatter us.

  39. Jessie's twin // April 11, 2014 at 11:07 PM // Reply

for some reason I think the betrayal will be Robert, you know alec and izzy’s dad, but also that the death could be luke or Jocelyn…I don’t really know but still im just guessing
    CANT WAIT

  40. DoYouFondue // April 12, 2014 at 9:48 AM // Reply

But but but it says ‘lovers will be torn apart!’ Do we experience this or is it just something to spice up the synopsis???

  41. Please don’t let Magnus die!!!!!!!!!
    DEMON REALAMS!!!!!!!

  42. You are so lucky to get COHF on 27 May… Yap

  43. If Cassie kills Simon off I will go to her house and mURDER HER WITH MY FEELS DO YOU HEAR ME CASSIE I’LL LEAVE YOU WITHOUT EMOTIONS SO HAVE A LITTLE THINK BEFORE YOU RELEASE THAT BOOK I LOVE YOU THOUGH

  44. I have a bad feeling that Simon will die. Seems like something he would do to save his friends. He never wanted to go on living without his family and friends anyway, which would seriously suck since Simon is my favorite character. I also believe the traitor is Robert Lightwood, as everyone has been pointing out. Then again maybe it’s too obvious. Maybe the traitor has been hidden in the shadows of the story all along, just in the background. Hmm… gives me an excuse to go back and read it all again before CoHF comes out. 🙂

  45. I so want to read the book but I don’t want the series to end. I know TDA will be there for us to fill our need of the shadow world but I just can’t take not reading about Clary and Jace, Magnus and Alec, Isabelle and Simon. I absolutely love them and I going to cry for sure when someone dies in this book. And now this……….Oh My God!!!!!

  46. Jessi's Twin // April 14, 2014 at 12:59 AM // Reply

What happens if clary is the traitor?
Would she fall for her brother and forget about jace?
    What would happen to jace?
Would she be seen in TDA as a bad guy?
Would she be the bad guy in TDA?
BY THE ANGEL I CAN”T TAKE THIS!!
PLEASE JUST GIVE US THE BOOK!!!!

  47. I’m not worried, or scared, that someone may die.

Have you all forgot what Lilith told Simon? He has the power to BRING SOMEONE BACK FROM THE DEAD. Remember? Daylighter? Yeah. It’s in COFA. That’s how Sebastian came back.

I would be disappointed if CC didn’t use this as a ‘don’t not die’ card in COHF.

  48. Does anyone think that the Fair Folk could be the ones who betray the Nephilim? It sounds like a bigger betrayal than just one person to me, and they’re working with Sebastian, aren’t they? Unless I am remembering wrong, it’s been a while since I read the last book.

  51. I am scarred to read this…. Scarred I will be as unhappy As I was after reading Allegiant and Mockingjay. I almost don’t want to read for fear of disappointment.

  52. Oh my gosh. O.O

  53. OMG THIS SOUNDS SO GOOOOD I CAN’T WAIT! I have a feeling the betrayer might be Luke but I really hope not im sooo excited

  54. Omg I can’t wait!!!!! I really hope that Magnus doesn’t betray them! But I don’t think he will because it say on of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known I think it kind of sounds like more then one person or maybe someone who has a really important position in the clave and know a lot of secrets
