Movie Monday: How faithful will the movie adaptation remain to the book?
Every Monday here at The Mortal Instruments Source is Movie Monday, where we talk about one of the many topics involving the movie adaptation of “City of Bones.”
One of the concerns with every book turned movie adaptation is how faithful the movie will remain to the book.
Books and movies are two completely different things so when you convert one to the other, things are bound to be changed. But to what extent is the real concern.
But that doesn’t seem to be a concern with Cassandra Clare.
Clare was initially approached to adapt the “City of Bones” to screenplay, but she opted against it , as it wasn’t exactly her forte.
“I’m not a screenplay writer,” she said in an interview with Reelz Channel. “I’ve read enough screenplays to know that it’s a different skill than writing a book. I felt that I’d rather leave it in the hands of somebody for whom screenplay writing is what they do.”
Jessica Postigo was penned to adapt “City of Bones” to screenplay and since then has completed the script, which is sure to undergo vast changes from now until and throughout filming. Postigo, a fan of the series, has met with Clare several times to discuss important facets of the book.
From the start, Clare thought that the studio should start with their own unique vision, in regards to the script, and she seems to be satisfied as to how things have progressed.
Clare saw the most recent version of the script about six weeks ago, and she said that “it remained pretty faithful to the book.”
One of the questions she was asked in her interview with Reelz Channel was what one aspect about the book did she ask to keep in the script.
“Don’t take out the incest,” Clare recalled telling Postigo during a lunch meeting. “They were like, ‘no, no, we wouldn’t dream of it.’ It’s still in there.”
She also noted that, along with the incest, that beloved characters Alec and Magnus would remain true to their gay roots.
But of the things that changed, most of it had to do with movie timing as opposed to book timing, according to Clare.
“There are no invented characters or scenes that seem out of place,” she said.
What do you think? Are you confident in the book to film adaptation? What scene from the book would you most like to see stay in the movie?
Since *spoiler* Clary and Jace aren’t actually related, there was no incest in City of Bones…
But since they didn’t know that until the end of Glass and for new audiences it will appear to be incest. But I get where you’re coming from.
I really, really, really hope that Clary and Jace’s first kiss is the same. It’s sooooo perfect in the greenhouse and then after with Simon interrupting 😀
I agree. That was meant to be seen on screen. It was so perfect.
Of course, I would love for the first time Clary sees Jace to remain the same. I have a feeling it might be a definite, but you never know. Just the way she sees him across the way, it just sucks you into her viewpoint. It’s one moment that has stuck with me through all the books.
I love that scene. It should remain relatively similar to the book and it’s not like they should have to change it too much if they do. That opening scene is really magical in itself. Can’t wait to see it brought to life on the big screen.
I hoping that seeing as the script writer is a fan and has been getting approval from Cassandra Clare through out writing that it will be close to the book and everything important will be left in. I’m not too worried at the moment and I’m just really looking forward to the movies
Cassie seems to trust them so we should as well. I can’t wait to see the book come to life on the big screen.
