No “Mortal Instruments” for Alex Pettyfer?

Is Alex Pettyfer done with "The Mortal Instruments?"

It’s been three months and counting since Alex Pettyfer was offered the role of Jace Wayland in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” film adaptation.

One month ago Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper confirmed that they were still negotiating with the “Beastly” and “I Am Number Four” star for the role of the coveted Shadowhunter.

With more than three months to consider taking on the role and negotiations still on-going, one must wonder if Pettyfer will ever accept the role.

It seems as if the Pettyfer for Jace has hit a speed bump.

Deadline reported that Pettyfer will be starring in “Magic Mike,” a film based on the real life events of Channing Tatum’s time as a male stripper.

Here are the deets, according to Deadline.

Soderbergh’s Magic Mike is the story of a friendship set in the world of male strippers. Tatum plays the title character, who schools a young dancer (Pettyfer) in how to hustle on and off the stage. It’s a wild summer of dancing, partying, and women. The inspiration was Channing’s own experiences as a stripper when he was 19. With Tatum, Nick Wechsler is producing with Gregory Jacobs and Reid Carolin who is writing the script. Soderbergh has called the film “sexy, funny and shocking” using Saturday Night Fever as a model.

Will this new role interfere with “Mortal Instruments” filming, which is scheduled to begin late summer or early fall of this year?

Author Cassandra Clare revealed that when she met with Screen Gems that they had narrowed down the Jace contenders to six actors, one of which we can assume is Pettyfer.

So there is no need to fret, “Mortal Instruments” fans. Have faith in the producers and the studio that they will find the perfect Jace Wayland.

The fact that they have taken so long in the search is quite encouraging. After all, looks alone won’t make an actor the perfect choice for the role. An actor should possess the essence of Jace. I feel confident that that the producers will indeed find an actor that will embody Jace and will deliver on screen.

What do you guys think? Are you ready to move on from the Alex for Jace campaign or are you not ready to stop believing? If Alex isn’t going to play Jace which actor would you like to see take on the role?

  1. There have also been posts about his involvement with a movie called overdrive with matthew goode that is supposed to film in the south of france this summer. I guess we just have to wait for an official announcement from sony (or some entity like that) until then everything is heresay. I would be bummed but I want these movies to be the best. maybe Alex decided it wasn’t the best fit (or someone decided for him or sony decided) i’ll be bummed because I thought it was a great fit but I just want to KNOW at this point.

    • I’m with you. Alex was my first pick as Jace but right now I just want them to pick a Jace so they can get on with the rest of the cast and they can start filming ASAP!

  2. At this point I think it is safe to say we are looking at *maybe* a start date before the end of the year-will TMI be going head to head with Breaking Dawn part 2 in fall 2012? I will say that it was Alex who made me aware of the existence of TMI-I only started reading the books because I wanted to see what everyone was talking about; so his “involvement” will always be a plus for me.

    • Lily Collins said that they would be filming this year no doubt, most likely late summer or early fall. I don’t think Screen Gems would even attempt to put TMI against an established powerhouse like Breaking Dawn. Probably late summer.

  3. I really hope he’s not cast. Even before I had a clear picture of Jace in my head, I still couldn’t see what was so appealing about Pettyfer.

  4. well, i really want alex to be jace…. there could be no better jace than him…. i’m a fan of both tmi and alex so i really wish, he’ll fianally accept the offer….

  5. I haven’t given up hope yet, but I must admit it doesn’t look good if it is
taking this long. I can’t imagine anyone else as Jace.

    • Alex was offered the part so long ago and the producers have been adamant that they want him. If he doesn’t take the role it’s because he doesn’t want it.

      • I’m still hoping that he will take the role. Maybe he’s just afraid of the commitment? If the movie turns out to be a success, they will certainly want to film all the books and that’s 6 in total!

So I’m sure the contract they want him to sign is for some, if not all the sequels. And like I said, that’s a huge commitment for any actor, especially if they like diversity.

      • That’s a good point. But since it’s been over three months since he was offered the role it’s not looking good for Alex For Jace.

  6. I know *sigh*. It will be VERY disappointing if or when we find out that he’s no longer in contention for the role. In the end, I guess all that really matters is that whomever is chosen will do the character of Jace justice and will have amazing chemsitry with Lily. I’ve never thought about it but it’s possible that Alex and Lily didn’t have “it” chemistry-wise. Still, it’s disappointing that things didn’t work out how we would have hoped because to me, he was the PERFECT Jace.

    • I never considered that Lily and Alex didn’t have that “it” chemistry that Clary and Jace need. If the studio can find an actor that has extraordinary chemistry with Lily then that will be the best possible thing. Alex does look like the perfect Jace but sometimes looks aren’t enough. But as long as an actor can embody Jace then the fandom will be incredibly happy in the end.

      • Exactly. Although I have a feeling that Alex would do Jace justice, there’s no telling how his chemistry with Lily was. If the producers offered him the part back in January, it’s likely that their chemistry was good. So I guess it comes down to what you said…that he just isn’t interested in playing the role for whatever reason.

Oh well, I just want the casting to be over and done with so we can move onto to the actual anticipation of the movie. Right now, it just feels like we’re at a standstill, waiting to know who’s going to play Jace.

  7. Leebo Freeman, Jamie Bower, Ed Speleers all tested Friday with Lily. Checked out recent pics of them & if Ed had any chemistry with Lily he should be Jace! although I do like Max Irons. Whatever will be will be…they seem to have gotten the right Clary..it’s an absolute MUST they get the right Jace & the rest of the cast should then fall into place (they will all have to have chemistry with both “Clary” & “Jace”). I think AP’s “problems” on set really dampened his chances.

  8. i think Alex would have suited Jace and i think he is making a big ,istake considering there are four mortal instrument books and there are still two more to be published so in total six movies which will likely all turn into movies so considering the fact that if he does not take the role he is dropping six movies for one so clearly he does not want to play Jace or he is just confused

  9. # 4 was perfect for the role, when i was reading the books he was the 1st. actor that came to mind. I do not like the actor they ended up choosing, not good-looking at all.
