Movie Monday: Does ‘Mortal Instruments’ have what it takes to be the next big film franchise?

Every Monday here at The Mortal Instruments Source is Movie Monday, where we talk about one of the many topics involving the movie adaptation of “City of Bones.”

With Harry Potter over and Twilight coming to an end next year, the new wave of Young Adult franchises are beginning to make their way toward the big screen.

The Hunger Games has already positioned itself to be a big blockbuster, with Lionsgate already optioning to film the entire trilogy and even splitting the conclusion into two films, like Harry Potter and Twilight have done.

This has prompted entertainment websites to ponder which YA franchises will likely be joining The Hunger Games as the next big thing.

With its two leads cast and filming scheduled to begin before year’s end, The Mortal Instruments is poising itself to join the ranks of past blockbuster franchises that came before it.

But just because a popular book series is adapted to film doesn’t guarantee success, as franchises such as Eragon and The Golden Compass have showed.

What makes The Mortal Instruments so different, you ask?

Here are some reasons why I believe that The Mortal Instruments has the opportunity to be a success film franchise:

-Popularity among fans

The Mortal Instruments has one of the strongest fan bases on the Internet and one that extends both domestically and internationally.

-Solid story and action

The Mortal Instruments is a series that appeals to both a female and male audience, which should make for a nice transition to the big screen, with a solid story arc and action throughout.

-Complex and intriguing characters

Perhaps one of the biggest strengths of The Mortal Instruments series is its collective cast of complex characters that occupy the pages. There are no major characters that go unexamined in the series and we continue to discover more about them as the series progresses.

-Romantic relationships

There isn’t just one single romantic relationship in The Mortal Instruments, they range in both heterosexual and homosexual, which gives all readers something to connect to.

-Incorporates magical elements while still creating its own unique take on its creatures

There is every possible magical creature one could think of in The Mortal Instruments, only it’s not the traditional characters you were expecting. Cassandra Clare was able to put her unique spin on certain magical elements that gives it a fresh new look.

-Has been recognized by major media as one of the “next big franchises”

While still in pre-production, The Mortal Instruments has already been recognized by various media outlets, along with The Hunger Games, as one of the next big book to film franchises. Just imagine when there is buzz once shooting begins.

  1. ‘The Hunger Games’ has a lot of buzz, but I think it will be the Harry Potter contender, whereas The Mortal Instruments has a bigger internet presence and a real cult following, making it the new ‘Twilight’, in my opinion. I really hope the films are handled well and that no detail is ommitted as Cassie Claire has created such a wonderfully rich and complex world that, in the right hands, the films could be visually stunning and have a real depth to them. Now I wish they’d hurry up and start the rest of the casting!

  2. I can defiantly see TMI being the next big thing. I have high hopes for the movie and hope that it is a success. That way we can see the whole series come to life. Cassandra Clare has created a world like no other and I really can not wait to see it all come to life. It’s going to be EPIC. (:
