THR: ‘The Mortal Instruments’ could be the next ‘Hunger Games’

In Hollywood it’s always about the next “big thing.”

And that’s not always a bad thing.

So it’s no insult when The Hollywood Reporter recommended The Mortal Instruments as one of four YA books heading to the big screen that fans of The Hunger Games should read and also have potential to be the next big thing.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare (Margaret McElderry,  movie rights to Constantin Film/Unique Features)

This four-book series (with two more scheduled in 2012 and 2013) about a teenage girl named Clary Fray who gets drawn into a supernatural war between demons and their opponents called Shadowhunters evokes a grittier urban update on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the series, Clary teams up with vampires, werewolves and faeries, and as they hunt for the three magical mortal instruments given by angels to the original Shadowhunters, she learns surprising secrets from her past. Mirror Mirror star Lily Collins has just been cast in the long-gestating movie version of the first book, City of Bones.

Also making the list were:

  • The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
  • Earthseed by Pamela Sargent
  • Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

  1. Two more books! The big “LOVE” is continuing, but at the same time. I hold a place in my heart for these books. Than to see them up on the screen, not all that excited.

  2. I’ve been saying this from the moment they announced they’ll be turning TMI books into movies – once the CoB movie comes out, ‘The Mortal Instruments’ is without a doubt going to be THE next big movie franchise!!!

so excited! it’s finally happening and yes I think city of bones and tmi will be really popular (rightfully so!) yay jamie and lily!

  4. It’s going to be VERY popular, and I’m scared. Sure, I like the idea of watching my favorite book scenes be played out, but yet… With the big popularity there will be annoying fangirls. Which, by all due respect.. Annoy the crap out of me. You know them, the girls (maybe boys) who run around screaming ” I’M A TMI FAN~!~!” And then you ask.. Oh really? Which book is your favorite? … ” They’re books..?” Okay, well maybe not to that extreme, but you get what I mean. I really hope the fanbase doesn’t embarrass me like they did with Twilight. ><

    • I know exactly what you mean Nancee! There’s fans and then there’s “fans”, lol. 🙂
I’ve loved and lived with those books for the past 4 years and feel very, very protective of them…It’s kind of like being a fan of the band Muse for over a decade in my case, and then Twilight comes out and suddenly all of these little kids who have never heard of the band and don’t know any of their songs are calling themselves “Muse-fans” because ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ was featured in the movie.
Gosh, I probably sound so mean…
