Cassandra Clare comes clean about Church the cat’s true identity

Fans have been begging for Cassandra Clare to come clean about Church’s true identity.

Looks like she finally gave in:

“Is Church the cat in TMI the same cat as in ID?”

I guess it’s time to come clean. Church the cat in The Mortal Instruments is actually Tessa.

I can’t speak about the tragic events at the end of Clockwork Princess, but let’s just say that Tessa is left alone to fend for herself. She’s learned to transform into animals as well as people so she transforms into Church and hitches a ride with Magnus when he emigrates to New York. Disguised as a cat, she is safe from Mortmain and his evil minions, so she stays that way and moves into the Institute when she hears the Lightwoods are taking over since she remembers Gideon fondly, despite the incident with the hurdy-gurdy that made Sophie realize she could never love him.

When the Mortal War breaks out and the Lightwoods all leave Church behind Tessa realizes she still owes the Shadowhunters loyalty and follows Magnus to Idris to take part in the battle. That’s why she has her human form in the scene where Clary glimpses her at the end of Glass. The reason she looks familiar to Clary is that she has not completely transformed back and still has cat ears.

Also, many have asked what she and Magnus are discussing. Tessa knows Magnus owns a cat and is hoping he can convince the Lightwoods to change their brand of dry cat food.

Clare also had this to say:

  5. it would be kind of cool though…

  6. i actually hope that tessa comes back another time in TMI, so we can see what happened with her after TID 🙂 [but i guess that might give away the ending, so Cassandra Clare wouldn’t do that…)

  7. So not cool….

  8. I almost had a heart attack and/or emotional breakdown…I hope it’s just a joke …..

  9. this is my second april fool’s-related heart attack of the day: I was just on mockingjay.net, and of course the first thing that i see is “josh hutchinson to bow out of hunger games sequels”. I literally almost fainted, as i did for this- by the angel am i thrilled that they’re both jokes.

OH MY JOSH!!!!!! NOT FUNNY. I was so freaked out. I thought Tessa actually left Will to fallow Magnus to New York! And I also thought of the possibilty of Jem and Will dying. I was happy about Jem and almost crying over will. Soooo not cool!

  11. That would be so cool I was actually exited, but I was sad Will didn’t get Tess and kind of indifferent about Jem but the other April Fools I got today at Julie Kagawas blogs was just not cool as a pretend teaser about her next Iron Fey book she said Meghan was dead and all the evidence led to Puck, do you know how uncool that was my heart actually stopped for a second.

  12. Hahaha!
I can’t get over the people who are (still) confused as to weather Church is the same cat in both TMI/ID….when it’s so obvious that he IS?!

  13. Thr was hilarious! It totally made my day!

  14. So Tessa isn’t Church then? Cause it would so much sense if she was. But oh Well… 😛

    🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥

Maybe she was giving us a hint about something?…

It would make more sense if it was Jem… He was dying so they did that so he could live. Church loves Jace…. If it is Jem, it reminds him of Will… I dunno!

    🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥ 🙂 😛 😀 😉 ♥

    • Oh my gosh that would be so cool and if Will and Tessa ended up together and he was some how Tessa’s descendant as wel…

  18. so…it was a joke? >.< Damn….why did I beleive it….I was gonna say thats abit…weird.

  19. K so Tessa isn’t church. Cause I don’t remember clary seeing someone with cat ears during the mortal war. But I haven’t read the books in awhile. I’m rereading them again. Some say church is the cat that is supposed to be sacrificed to bring back the dark sisters in one of the Id books but is saved by Jem. I would really like to know who he is! And to think I thought all this time church was just a cat!

  20. i realize this reply is beyond late, the thought only just crossed my mind, but remember when the Dark Sisters practiced magic on him? Well maybe the cat became immortal as a result……….

I hate myself for beliceing this …….. is dumd but vry funny

  22. I was most definitely not fooled by this Article – having read the Clockwork Princess twice, I know that Tessa marries Will, lives happily (the ever after is obviously not an option) in London and then in Yorkshire, and that she is not left alone until Will dies when he is old and full of years. Magnus takes Church the night of the first Christmas Party without Jem, at the London Institute when he emigrates to New York. However, I was was really hoping for an explanation of why Church is immortal. He was just a cat Mrs Dark was going to use in a necromancy spell, so why is he still alive?
