Movie Monday #8: Popular Quotes
We are just over a year away from the theatrical release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.
I’ve banded together with other ‘Mortal Instruments’ fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms, TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a new weekly feature called Movie Monday.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
Week 7: POPULAR QUOTES
Alyssa, TMI Source: Fans of The Mortal Instruments can quote lines directly from Cassandra Clare’s best selling books. They are such a big part of the fans and their passion for the series. So with the film adaption of City of Bones the question becomes will those popular quotes be incorporated into the film? While I believe that not all of those quotes we know by heart will make it into the film, I feel that those that are important to the plot and the characters will make it in.
Especially when some of those bits of dialogue are a characteristic of a character, namely Jace. He’s known for those snarky one-liners and it’s a big part of his demeanor. I believe that some, but not too many, of his snarky quotes will be included in the film, but I have faith in I. Marlene King and Jessica Postigo to relay his snark through other forms of dialogue, as well.
Let’s face it, this a film adaptation not an exact, word-for-word or action-for-action movie. That’s how it works I’m Hollywood. I think that if even only a few lines from the book are incorporated into the script that fans will be quite pleased.
Amber, TMI Institute: Although I’d love to hear and see every quote from the City of Bones book on the big screen, the screenplay writers, I. Marlene King and Jessica Postigo, have surely narrowed the dialogue to include great quotes from the book as well as new lines that will help to move the plot of the movie along well. One of the quotes I would love to see have been mentioned in our post about pop culture references, and is a conversation between Jace and Clary:
“Don’t touch any of my weapons without my permission.”
“Well, there goes my plan for selling them all on eBay,” Clary muttered.
“Selling them on what?”
Clary smiled blandly at him. “A mythical place of great magical power.”
There are so many one-liners by Jace that I’d love to see included in the film:
“Declarations of love amuse me. Especially when unrequited.”
“The meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited. Like me.”
“Just coffee. Black – like my soul.”
“Was it weird hearing from Jace?” asked Simon, his voice carefully neutral. “I mean, since you found out…”
His voice trailed off.
Yes?”said Clary, her voice sharply edged. “Since I found out what? That he’s a killer transvestite who molests cats?”
“No wonder that cat of his hates everyone.”
Oh, shut up, Simon,” Clary said crossly.”
“Meanwhile,” Simon added, “I wanted to tell you that lately I‘ve been cross-dressing. Also, I‘m sleeping with your mom. I thought you should know.”
Natalie, TMI Examiner: I LOVE this Monday Movie topic! For me some of the most memorable quotes from ‘City of Bones’ make it the most memorable. Cassie has said that after the rewrite of the film script by ‘Pretty Little Liars’ I. Marlene King that it did have more of the popular and fan favorite quotes. My favorite quote moments involved Jace. Probably one of my favorite quotes of his is when he said, “Shadowhunters looking better in black than our enemies widows since 1234.” This really shows his witty personality and serves as a great comic relief moment when Clary is stressed about their arrival the City of Bones. I do see this quote making it in the film since it is very popular and greatly accomplishes that comic relief moment. I also love the part when he tells Clary a bedtime story about his falcon and says “to love is to destroy.” This is a very important piece to the puzzle of understanding Jace Wayland. For character development purposes, I believe that will make it into the movie.
There are so many fabulous quotes in ‘City of Bones.’ I can’t wait to see what makes the cut. Unfortunately, not all of the best quotes will make it in but hopefully the ones that really accomplish developing Cassandra Clare’s characters and plot will make it. I also really love so many of Magnus’ quotes. Oh the wait will be hard in getting the answer to this discussion!!
Tita, TMI News en Espanol: TMI books have tons of memorable dialogue and popular quotes between the fans. Who doesn’t want to see them in the movie? All of them, it would be a dream, but let’s face it, Hollywood can’t put into a movie all the book, so at least let’s expect to to see the most popular ones….
Quotes like:
“Shadowhunters: Looking better in black than the widows of our enemies since 1234”
or
“Facilis Descensus Averno: The descent into hell is easy”
or
“If you were half as funny as you think you are, you’d be twice as funny as you are now.”
or
“Sarcasm is the last refuge of the imaginatively bankrupt.”
Or dialogues like:
“Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?”
Jace said, “Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself.”
…”At least,” she said, “you don’t have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland.”
“Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.”
or
“Do you remember back at the hotel when you promised that if we lived, you’d get dressed up in a nurse’s outfit and give me a sponge bath?” asked Jace.
“It was Simon who promised you the sponge bath.”
“As soon as I’m back on my feet, handsome,” said Simon.
“I knew we should have left you a rat.”
OK, I stop now, or I will write all the book, because as a big fan I would love to see all of them in the movie, but if they keep most of them, it will make fans very happy I think 🙂

I am sure that not all the popular quotes will appear in the screenplay, but, I think the book contanis material enough to full the movie of those lines that we totaly love.

I think it’s gonna be a great movie but they have to have so badly want ” to love is to destroy and to be loved is to be the one destroyed ” that tell you everything about jace a clary

i think popular one liners and romantic ones will be included. i’d love to see the ebay ones and the moments between simon and clary, and the codename one. there’s a bunch i’d love to see but i know not all of them will make it in
Love, love, love this topic! I re-read over a bit of the City of Bones again and these quotes never fail to make me laugh. I cannot wait to see this movie!
I liked the one that jace said “if you call an electric a rubber duckie does it make it a rubber duckie? And id be sad for the poor basturd who actually uses it as duckie” or something like that. Lol
