Darren Criss says he’s not ‘cool enough’ to play Magnus in ‘Mortal Instruments’
Darren Criss of Glee fame has been a popular fan-casting for the role of Magnus Bane in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
So MTV, being the amazing and curious folks that they are, asked Darren (who is half-Filipino, half-Irish) if he’d heard his name suggested by fans for the role of Magnus.
His answer might surprise you.

“Oh, I have heard that,” Darren said. “I really thought Harry Shum would be good for that. I mean, that’s cool. It’s a funky part. That’d be really fun, but I don’t think they’d let me do that.”
When pressed as to why he wouldn’t be allowed to portray the beloved character, Darren gave an answer we totally don’t agree with. “I don’t think I’m cool enough for that,” he said.
To their credit, Darren’s co-stars both disagreed, with Kevin offering up an intriguing (though not entirely realistic) solution: “You and Harry can just split the part like twins,” he said. To which Darren looked straight into the camera and delivered this final comment: “Cast me!”
It sounds like Darren is interested in the role (who wouldn’t be?!), as is Harry Shum (below).
Shum tweeted back in May that he was reading The Mortal Instruments, but the tweet has since been deleted. Could he have auditioned for Magnus?

Harry Shum as Magnus? Hmmmmmmm….
Harry looks the part with they did ‘Scream’ on Glee with all the black and mascara. CC has made a comment on it that she’d be interested in having him and I know way back on Twitter he mentioned he was reading The Mortal Instruments like in May or something (maybe he auditioned? Timing seemed way too coincidental.)
Looks like he deleted that tweet…wondered if that said anything. (Only found someone tweeting him back excited that he was reading it which is the only proof)

Yea totally agree I hope it is not him because I just cant picture him as Magnus. shannon kook is way better to be as Magnus ._ .
no freakin way to either of them hello neither even come close to lookin part asian or mature enough magnus is young looking yes but he is like a billion years old so he has to have maturity in is features i think he to me is probably the hardest to cast
Harry Shum looks young in motion/photoshoots but a lot of his step photos at premieres and events make Harry Shum look a lot older. He’s not that young though; he’s actually 30 years old. A lot of Asians tend to look like they age slower. (My mom got carded at a casino when she was 42 lol)
And CC has mentioned she wanted an Asian actor or a biracial person who looked dominantly Asian. His father might have been from Europe, but he was a demon. His features be dominantly Asian if not all cause his mother was human.
I do not think any of us have discussed so hard for another paper.
I like Shum, and Criss does not bother me … I want to be open to possibilities. I just hope the studio to make a good decision, someone who can actually act. And does not look too old…
I like Harry Shum for Magnus, a lot more than most of the other actors mentioned for the part. I still love the idea of Shannon Kook, but that doesn’t seem likely :(.
I was never into the idea of Darren Criss for Magnus! If anything, he doesn’t look Asian enough to play Magnus as far as I’m concerned. And he’s right – he’s nowhere near hot enough for the part.
I love the idea as Darren for Magnus! He is Half Asian, which Magnus is described as and he has also played gay on film. He has most of the characteristics down so i think he can pull it off…. he is also my fav choice for Magnus.
