Movie Monday #14: The Circle Flashbacks

We are just over a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms, TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 14: The Circle Flashbacks

Alyssa, TMI Source: I could definitely see flashbacks to the days of The Circle being incorporated into the film. The story of Valentine’s Circle is integral to the plot and the series. I could see flashbacks being used in the scene where Luke is telling Clary of what happened in the past. Not only is it easier to do in film than in books, but it would give us more insight into the past. Plus with the uber-talented cast–in Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Aidan Turner and Jared Harris–who wouldn’t want to see them with as much screen time possible for their characters?

Amber, TMI Institute: I would personally love to see flashbacks to the Circle. I know there are things that will be chopped for time, but I could see them showing flashes of a young, charismatic Valentine with Jocelyn by his side and Luke standing in the background looking worried while Valentine slowly tries to warp them into believing that his ultimate twisted goal is the correct one. I don’t know if they would hire different actors for this or if they would just make the actors look as young as possible. I just really hope this happens!

Katie, Mundie Moms: YES!! I really, really hope they include these in the movie. I’d be surprised if they left this out of the movie. I think getting a glimpse into Valentine’s circle is huge for the story line. Not just for COB, but for the series. Here we get to see the kind of man Valentine is, why Luke left, and why Jocelyn went through all the trouble she did to hide the cup and protect Clary. Getting to see this on the big screen would be amazing, even more so than reading about it. I’m very anxious to see what they do with this sequence of scenes.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I hope to see some Circle flashbacks especially considering the talent of the Circle cast, Lena Headey (Jocelyn Fray,) Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Valentine Morgenstern,) and Jared Harris (Hodge Starkweather.) Flashback scenes are always easier to do in movies than books. This can be a visual and compelling way to add to the story. I hope it will be there but we will see!

Tita, TMI News en Español: I do really think we’ll see the flashbacks to Valentine circle in the movie, let’s be honest, Hollywood love flashbacks!! They are very useful to understand what was the situation and why people acted why they acted in that moment, and specially why they where following Valentine! I think they are pretty important to give the audience a look to the story 🙂

What are your thoughts? Do you think we’ll see flashbacks to the days of Valentine’s Circle? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

  1. I am a flashbacks-lover, and I like the idea a lot. I wonder how the studio would picture Idris.

flashback would be aweaome and i also wonder how the the film will depict idris. for actors maybe they’ll have some flashbacks for the circle with younger actors(e.g. young jocelyn) and maybe other flashbacks that are non circle related, some will be with the original actors and some with the younger actors.
