Movie Monday #15: Hotel Dumort

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer. I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday. Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 15: Hotel Dumort

Alyssa, TMI Source: With the news that Raphael Santiago won’t be in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, I think the Hotel Dumort scene is the first scene that fans know for certain will be different from the book. It makes me question how Jace and Clary enter the hotel. In the book Raphael leads them inside, but in the movie either the Vampire Lieutenant or another vampire will or they will freely trespass on their own accord.

But regardless of the absence of Raphael, and the addition of the Vampire Lieutenant, I believe the Hotel Dumort scene will still play true to the essence of the scene regardless of the changes it might face.

Amber, TMI Institute: I’m completely curious what they will do with the first Hotel Dumort scene since we won’t have Raphael in the movie. I always think of the scene in the alley where Raphael appears, warning Jace and Clary that the place is dangerous and ultimately backstabs them. I assume they will use Elyas M’Barek in this adversarial role. This may be the first time I’m really unsure how to invision this! I can’t wait to see how they do it!!!

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I think this scene is going to be very interesting. We now know that Raphael isn’t making an appearance in ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ I’m looking forward to how they’re going to handle this scene. This is going to be an area where we see some differences from the book. This will obviously be a scene where we see Elyas M’Barek. I’ve read how popular he is in Europe so I’m looking forward to seeing him in an American film.

I also think this will be a scene where the stunt coordinators and special effects department can have some fun. I can’t wait to see Clary and Jace’s escape on the motorcycle!

Tita, TMI News en Español: I looooooooooooooooooooooooooove The Hotel Dumort chapter!!! I love all that happens in it! The danger, the funny situations, the tension, the fight, the rescue… Everything!!! Vampires, werewolfs and shadowhunters are a hot mix that we can’t miss in the movie! It’s such a good part of the book that I bet we’ll have, well, not all of it, because for time it is quite dificult in the movie, but I bet we’ll see as much as the studio will be able to do!

Who doesn’t want to see Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland) and Lily Collins (Clary Fray) in action? 🙂

What are your thoughts? How do you think Raphael’s absence will affect the Hotel Dumort scene? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

  1. As long as they leave out everything to do with that stupid flying motorbike in the scenes leading up to and after it. I always felt like she just stole the idea from Harry Potter and made it a motorbike instead of a car. It was silly in the book and would look even more ridiculous on screen. I’m hoping they were smart and left it out as it doesn’t really add anything to the plot. They can use other methods to get them to the hotel and Clary, Jace and Simon out. They don’t need it in the final scene either-you could just as easily have Clary and Jace talking about Clary “seeing” for the first time without it.

I don’t see why the scene will be all that different just because Raphael isn’t in it. It’s not like his character did anything that special that the new vamp character can’t do. I’m glad they’ve left him out to be honest I found the way Cassandra Clare wrote him as stereotypical and one-dimensional. Maybe Jessica Postigo noticed that was quite offensive and left him out on purpose?

I, for one, liked the part with the flying motorbike. That scene is where the reader discovers that Clary is afraid of heights. This makes her more relateable to the everyday person, like me. (I HATE heights. Even small ones.) Also, the motorbikes are important in CoA when Jace uses one to go to the boat that Valentine is on. AND, in CoFA Raphael goes to speak with Simon on one. They do actually serve a purpose, and I think it would be a mistake not to include them.

i love the motorcycle! also i don’t think she stole from jk rowling . need i point out that there the was the notion of the possibility of there being flying cars and motorcycles in the future which was discussed by random people(futurists maybe) before cassie and jk rowling wrote their series. also, the end with jace taking her for another ride is sweet and romantic. i l also don’t find Diego to be written as offensively

  2. I’m guessing the vampire lieutenant or another vampire will find them. I guess it doesn’t make much difference if Raphael isnt in City of Bones but he’ll need to be in the other movies thats for sure. Especially City of Fallen Angels and City of Lost Souls. I’m just hoping they’ll get the scene right with the Vampire Motorbikes. I really liked it in the book. As long as they dont change to much stuff everything will be fine.

  3. I loved Raphael! Come on people! He was described do well, and he made that one part of the movie funny AND mysterious! Now if he’s not in this movie it might wreck the other movies, ultimately wrecking the parts with Camille who is one of my favorite characters since I read Clockwork Angel. I USUALLY don’t like villainesses but she does it with style.

  4. I DON TKNOW WHY THE FREKIN CHANGED IT. WHY WOULD U CHANGE IT HES ONLY IN THE BOOK FOR ABOUT TWO SECOUNDS

I think that may be why they took Raphael out of the first movie. In CoB, his part is somewhat important, but it really is only a small part.

i am excited and interested to see how it will be. i love the motorbike bit cuz it reveals more the world and that clary is afraid of heights. i think the main esscence of the scene be intact . afterall it is a vampire leading him and we may see Raphael in other movies. i don’t think it will ruin it

  6. If Raphael isn’t in the scene then rat/Simon can’t bite him starting the change. If Raphael doesn’t change him in the movie who will?

  7. No!!! The movie won’t be the same without Raphael! I’m so disapointed, but I can’t wait to see what happens. This movie is gonna be awesome. 🙂 I wish Raphael was in it though. 😦
