Movie Monday #20: Hugin

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 20: Hugin

Alyssa, TMI Source: Hugin plays an integral role in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. He is with Hodge when Clary first meets him and he serves as Valentine’s eyes at the Institute in his absence. The question is whether or not Hugin will be CGI or a real bird. I think we could see a bit of both. Perhaps a real bird when Hugin is spying on Clary and Jace in the greenhouse and CGI for when Hugin attacks Clary. Regardless I can’t wait to see how Hugin comes to life on screen.

Amber, TMI Institute: With Jared Harris on location this past week on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones set, I started imagining the setting where he is placed. Within the walls of the library and providing an ever present, creepy companion to Hodge, I thought what the studio will do about Hugin. Will he be CG? Will they sometimes use a real crow? Will Hugin even be in the film? When I look back to movies like The Crow and The Stand, the presence of crows in the eerie, dark world of the supernatural always makes things a bit scarier. It could be because they are such an ominous creature or that they seem to stalk humans in most films. Hugin will also have that watchful beady eye, and I’m very hopeful to see the winged beast in the film!

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I like Hugin and how his presence on Hodge’s should distorts Clary’s first impression of Hodge. I would love to see them use a real bird on Jared Harris’ should for our introduction to his character. Obviously Hugin will be a CGI bird for his attack on Clary but I’d love to see a real bird when possible. I do hope they include Hugin in Hodge’s introduction because it shows us (those who’ve read the book) the connection with Hodge and Valentine. I am looking forward to seeing how Hugin is handled in the film.

Tita, TMI News en Español: Hugin is an animal that really makes me nervous. You can see that he’s faithful to Hodge but looks to everyone with this look in his eyes… it’s going to be interesting to see if they have Hugin in the movie and how it’s going to look, well, we all know how it’s going to look, what i mean is that if it’s going to be like it is in the books, if it’s going to interrupt Jace and Clary in the Greenhouse, if we’re going to see any scene from his point of view, like for example: Hugin spying on the Shadowhunters…

I know I say this sentence every week but, I can’t wait to see what they are going to do with this amazing movie!!! :’)
