10 Things We Loved About MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES Filming

Filming wraps on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES today (Nov. 7) in Toronto and we are one step closer to watching this adaptation makes it way to the big screen.

These past two and a half months have been a crazy ride for fans filled with plenty of excitement.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 Things We Loved About Filming on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES to re-live our favorite memories from filming:

1. FAN SITE SET VISIT: In late September a few fan sites, including TMI Source, were invited to the Toronto set of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES for an exclusive on-set event. We got to tour the set and interview the cast. While we’re currently sworn to secrecy by Sony Pictures, we can’t wait to share our experience on the CITY  OF BONES set.

2. SET PHOTOS: The first day of filming back on Aug. 20 kicked off what would become a slew of photos from the Toronto set from fans and paparazzi alike. It gave fans their first look at the actors in action and at the on-location sets, which included Java Jones, Pandemonium, the Institute and Hotel Dumort.

3. SET REPORTS: Toronto fans made their passion and presence known from the very first day of filming back on Aug. 20 when they found the undisclosed sets and watched the film come to life. Throughout filming fans in Toronto shared reports from the set detailing what scenes were being filming and sharing their experiences meeting the cast and crew. The Toronto Shadowhunters brought the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES set to fans all around the world who couldn’t be there in person.

4. CASSANDRA CLARE ON SET: Cassandra Clare has always been generous with fans when it comes to the happenings of her books and that continued when she visited the Toronto set on two separate occasions. She had dinner with the cast on several occasions (including once prior to the start of filming) and let the fans interact with the cast. Also, let’s not forget those infamous hand photos (see below).

5. FIRST WEEK OF FILMING: It’s safe to say that fans did not expect what came with the first week of filming on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. Starting on Monday, Aug. 20 we got a slew of set photos and reports from fans that had found the set. But it didn’t stop there. The madness continued throughout the rest of the week as we got looks at the major cast members and several key sets. It was quite the tempo to set for filming on the first film in this beloved book series.

6. ON-LOCATION SETS: Filming on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES kicked off with on-location filming around Toronto. Toronto was transformed into the New York City that our favorite characters live in. The on-location sets were fun for a few reasons, including set photos and fans getting to watch everything unfold. The notable on-location sets were Java Jones, Pandemonium, the Institute, Luke’s bookstore and Hotel Dumort.

7. SIDEBURNS GUY: Let’s face it, Sideburns Guy was destined to be a legend in this fandom. Sideburns Guy–or as he goes by Jeff–quickly became an online sensation with fans as he appeared in most of the set photos escorting the actors to the set sporting those trademark sideburns. Cassandra Clare spoke to Sideburns Guy about his new-found fame. Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook fan pages were even created in his honor.

8. HAND PHOTOS: A hand isn’t just a hand anymore. Not after the trend that Cassandra Clare started on the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES set. Because the set is embargoed and because the studio wants to keep the sets, costumes, etc. secret for the time being, Clare found a way around sharing photos of the embargoed set by taking photos of the actors’ hands with her own hand. The trend quickly became a hit with the fandom and we’re already looking forward to hand photos from THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES set.

9. CAST AUTOGRAPHS: Who would have thought that autographs would be such a hit with a fandom? Toronto fans that found their way to the undisclosed sets also got to meet some of the cast–mainly Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robbie Sheehan, Jemima West and Kevin Zegers. Being the awesome dedicated fans they are they came with their MORTAL INSTRUMENTS books in tow and the cast signed them. Robbie became infamous for his hilarious sayings with his autographs, Jamie signed with his signature vampire fangs and the rest of the cast also signed with their character names.

10. CAST PROMO VIDEOS: During filming Sony Pictures shared some promo videos featuring the main cast–Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robbie Sheehan, Jemima West and Kevin Zegers–talking about their character and filming on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. A couple of fansites, including TMI Source, received personalized video messages from the cast as we prepared for our set visit in September. But perhaps these won’t be the last promo videos we get of the cast as post-production is set to get underway.

It’s bittersweet with filming coming to an end, but with the end of filming comes a whole new chapter in this magical book-to-film adaptation. One that only promises excitement for a dedicated fandom.

Check back tomorrow as we take a look at 10 Things to Look Forward To as post-production on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES gets underway.

P.s. Don't seriously work your Runes off…They won't work properly! XD

  2. Definitely meeting and talking to Lily and Robert and talking with the production crew. They are all great people! Although, I didn’t get anything signed 😦 Next movie I definitely will be!

  3. The set reports! Even though the dedicated fans who managed to track down the sets seemed mostly stuck waiting on the sidelines for hours to catch the smallest glimpse of the cast or exchange a brief irrelevant conversation with a member of the crew, I appreciated ever second of it. It was all so real, so relatable, it made me feel like I was there.
Thank you set reporters! I hope you never felt like you wasted your time reporting, even the smallest detail was real and connected me to the movie more than speculation about how bigger things might be protrayed ever could.

Goodbye actors, this is the goodbye, but will be very happy to see you again when th next movie comes out. 🙂

  5. I’ll miss having total fangirl moments. The last couple of months have been a blast with fandom and following everything to do with the movie up. My famous fangirl moments have been related to the movie and you can’t get fangirly over something you’ve already seen… its just not the same. I’m going to miss Sideburns Guy and the cast and just about everything movie related really. At least we still have the book eh? And the movie (obviously)! Can’t wait for it all to come together!

  6. I still regret not going to the set 😦

  7. I’m sad that I was never able to get time off work to go and visit – or try and visit the set. I would have loved to have had Jamie sign his book – The Jamie Campbell Bower Handbook. that I have. How awesome that would have been!!! I am going to take my vacation when they film City of Ashes and I WILL make it there next time.
I am also going to miss the daily reports. It gave me something to look forward to when I got home from work to see what had happened that day. All you reporters were great and thanks so much for keeping us all informed. Can’t wait to see the trailer next week and the moive next August!!!! 🙂 xxxxx ooooo to all the actors, actresses/directors/ reports…….everyone!!!!
