We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
Week 28: Simon the Rat
Alyssa, TMI Source: The thing with film adaptations is that not everything from the book makes it into the movie. One of those moments fans are hoping make it into the movie is when Simon becomes a rat at Magnus’ party. This drew a lot of attention following the release of the teaser trailer when we saw a shirtless Simon in Hotel Dumort with the Shadowhunters. A lot of people were wondering whether Simon was actually a rat or if he had turned earlier than in the book? I believe that Simon will still be a rat in the film and that he’ll turn back into himself before the Shadowhunters come to rescue him (as we saw a shot of someone–who looks a lot like Simon (Robbie Sheehan)–hanging in Hotel Dumort).
Everything from the book can’t make the big screen jump, but Harald Zwart has been great with staying faithful to the story so any small changes he makes, like shortening Simon’s time as a rat, I am fine with.
Amber, TMI Institute: Among the many things TMI fans have to theorize about regarding what will or won’t be in the upcoming City of Bones movie, one of the most highly debated moments is whether or not Simon will become a rat.
Now, we see Simon (Robert Sheehan) shirtless at one point in the Hotel Dumort scene. It’s not clear why he’s shirtless, but my theory is that he has been changed back from rat to human. Because movie plots must move at a quicker pace than books, I’m not entirely sure at what point they will transform Simon back.
Harald Zwart has said that it’s important to stay true to the story, so I feel that this moment in the book will be reflected as accurately as possible in the big screen adaptation.
Natalie, TMI Examiner: I believe we will see “rat Simon” in the film but probably for not as long as we do in the book. In the teaser trailer we get a glimpse into the Hotel Dumort scene and in it we see some clear changes in the film adaptation. All book to film adaptations experience changes and in this case I am liking the changes. First of all, I think having Alec and Isabelle in that scene is smart and will help to further develop their characters for new fans of the series. But back to “rat Simon,” a clear change seen in the trailer is that Simon is shirtless and very human in that scene. Since he is shirtless, I think it’s safe to assume that we will see “rat Simon” but that he will change back into a human during this scene rather than during the vampire bike scene. I like this change and look forward to seeing Robert Sheehan’s reaction and possible contribution to the fight. Is it August yet? I’m looking forward to seeing this scene come together.
Tita, TMI News en Español: I’m super excited to see how Simon is going to look like a rat. Magnus’ party and the Hotel Dumort are two of my fav moments in CoB and the whole “OMG I drank a faery drink and now I’m a rat” just make it moooore exciting. At the beginning, after watching the trailer I was scared because Simon is there only as a human at the Hotel Dumort, and I had a inner panic attack, but then I release that there’s no CGI in the trailer, it means it’s not possible to see Simon as a Rat. Besides, Cassie and Harald already said that they made the movie as faithful to the book as they could, so I’m quite positive we are going to love Simon the Rat 😉
