We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.
Week 32: Demon Police
Alyssa, TMI Source: Judging from our glimpse of one of the demon police in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES teaser trailer I can already tell there is going to be more emphasis on them in the film. The demon police are brought to our attention by Clary in Chapter 4 “Ravenor” as she watches the aftermath of the Ravenor attack. The scene looks so kick-ass in the teaser trailer (with Simon standing behind him and also Jace sliding over the top of the police car hood). I can’t help but notice small differences but also be quite excited about them. This just gets me more thrilled to see Harald Zwart’s interpretation of Cassie’s world.
Amber, TMI Institute: The demon police in Chapter 4 “Ravener” are basically summed up with a small description of police woman with blond hair and a skeletal hand. Much is left to our imagination for what she would really look like if we saw her in real form. Fortunately, it seems like Harald Zwart and the writers, Jessica Postigo and Marlene King, has helped us out in that department and created a much more frightening visual for the film. The scene looks so intense in the trailer, so I’m positive the demon police called to Clary’s house will be even better than the theater of our minds! I’m really looking forward to seeing this completed scene with all the digital effects.
Katie, Mundie Moms: I’m really looking forward to seeing what the creative forces behind the TMI movie are going to do with the demon police in the movie. Judging by the snippet we see in the movie trailer, this scene is going to be AWESOME! In the book, we only have a brief description of the female officer, and I have no doubts that Harald and his team are going to take that brief description and run with it for the movie. I have a feeling this is going to be a scene TMI fans are going to enjoy. It’s also going to be one of the first scenes outside of the club where we really get to see what the Shadowhunter world is made of. I have no doubts that it’s going to heart pounding and visually awesome!! I can’t wait to see the creepiness of the demons.
Natalie, TMI Examiner: This scene is exciting to discuss because we saw a glimpse of it in the first trailer. I love how director Harald Zwart is using mostly make up and other effects rather than just resorting to CGI. Since all CGI was still being worked on when the first trailer debuted we have yet to see its impact on the film. I’m a fan of less CGI, especially in this scene because I feel it gives the police demons a more realistic and scary image. Though I’m sure the CGI in City of Bones will be great if overused, as the technique is in some movies, it tends to come off as cheesy. Seeing Zwart’s work so far on this project and the choices he is making like in this particular scene, further proves to me that this will be a movie the fans will be proud of and that Harald Zwart is the best man to bring Clare’s world to life.
Tita, TMI News en Español: Oh how much I love that the studio keep the demon police at Clary’s house after the Ravenor demon attack! They look so awesome in the teaser trailer, so scary! I have to admit I didn’t really had an idea of how they looked, only that they face was horrible, and after watching the teaser of their looks, I was so happy with the results. I’m curious to know if Simon are going to talk to them, because we can see him behind one of the police man in that scene.
