Movie Monday #33: Clary and Simon’s friendship

Movie Monday

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanolfor a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 33: Clary and Simon’s friendship

Alyssa, TMI Source: Clary and Simon’s friendship is something that makes not only CITY OF BONES special, but THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS special, as well. There are several scenes in CITY OF BONES that fans are looking forward to seeing with these two, including Clary going to Hotel Dumort to rescue Simon and Simon’s love confession to Clary. We are so very lucky to have Robert Sheehan as our Simon. One of the reasons Robert got the role (besides his portrayal of Simon) is his great chemistry with his Clary, Lily Collins. Even from a brief glimpse at their friendship in the beginning of the teaser trailer you can see that we’re in for quite a treat with these two best friends come Aug. 23.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: I can’t wait to see the chemistry between Clary (Lily Collins) and Simon (Robert Sheehan.) I feel like this is an essential relationship in the series and is just as important than Lily and Jamie’s romantic chemistry. I think that portraying a friendship chemistry on film is harder than showing romantic chemistry because it is less obvious. When we meet Clary and Simon they already have a set relationship with years of history. There is no longing stare from across the club, they are set in their relationship, which works against Simon as he wants more. Simon grows so much throughout the series and that growth will be exceptional based on how Robert portrays Simon and his interaction with Lily. I love the family-like relationship that these characters have. They are comfortable and Simon’s friendship will be a key familiarity for Clary as she falls deeper into this new world. 2013 is a BIG year for ‘Mortal Instruments’ fans and seeing the chemistry between Lily and Robert is one of the many elements I’m looking most forward to seeing in ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.’

Tita, TMI News en Español: One of the most memorable things in The Mortal Instruments series, besides all the awesomeness of the series itself, it’s the friendship between Simon and Clary  Yes, we all know that Simon is in love with her, but what these two do for each other, in the good moments and in the bad moments, it’s something that makes their situation very special. Simon would do anything for her, and we can see it clearly at the course of the series, but in City of Bones we all can see what Clary would do for her best friend. She goes into a hotel full of vampires to save him and that it’s something that not all your friends would do for you, let’s face it. They are friends like from forever, very attuned, and they love each other no matter what. Oh my, aren’t you all super excited to watch this chemistry in the movie???? :’)

What are your thoughts? How excited are you to see Clary and Simon’s friendship come to life on the big screen? Join in on the discussion!

  1. I had a friend like Simon from 7th grade to my graduation; Steven. It was a strange and delicate line between best friends and attraction. It hurt me to know how he felt because I was afraid of loosing him. I gave in and agreed to date him in our senior year… and it made things instantly weird. We ended things soon after and whenever I see him now (where adults with families of our own) I long to be with him, like we were before we dated. I wish it had worked out, only to have made Steve happy. It’s hard to have him look at me with that bitter sweet smile. I guess Im saying that some things shouldn’t be tested, like Simon and Clary’s friendship, because there will always be a note of regret there.

  2. The Simon/Clary relationship is so important during the whole Series. Hopefully all the movies are made so this can be brought to the screen. Even Simon’s relationship with Jace later on and with his sister Rebecca, and Izzy even Valentine, are all so meaninful to the whole storyline.

both jace and clary/s relationships, simon and clarys and sizzys as well as malalecs (and eventually jordana nd maias) are all important. I can’t wait to see how this is played out! i hope all the books made it to screen! also, the dynamic between jace, izzy, and alec are important too as well between valentine and sebastation which includes clary. the dynamic between luke and jocelyn are of importantce too. i also want to see some progession of the relationship between clary and isabelle and clary and alec and the progressd between jace and simon over the series in the film(though they may always have a round of insults at some point for each other lol)
