Movie Monday #35: Hugin attacks Clary

Movie Monday

We are less than a year away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 35: Hugin attacks Clary

Alyssa, TMI Source: This is a scene that I’m looking forward to seeing play out on screen. It’s a moment where the audience (minus the readers, of course) probably believes the movie is nearing its end, but they will be taken aback by the revelation with Hodge, as well as Hugin attacking Clary. So much goes down in this scene–from Hodge’s betrayal to the attack to Valentine’s appearance to Jace’s kidnapping–there will no doubt be a lot of superb acting talent in this one scene that leave the audience on edge of their seats.

Amber, TMI Institute: The scene where Hugin attacks Clary is important because it unfolds the true deception of Hodge. I  believe this scene will be included with Hugin’s attack being CGI. The dastardly bird will fly into Clary, clawing and grabbing the Mortal Cup to give it Hodge. For fans of the book, it’s a moment of shock and disappointment. I am hoping fans will enjoy seeing Jared Harris deliver what I expect to be a genius performance as Hodge!

Natalie, TMI Examiner: The scene where Hugin attacks Clary delivers a very crucial twist in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” This is when we learn about Hodge’s (Jared Harris) grand deception. I was most thrilled with the casting of Jared Harris in this role. He is an exceptional actor that I feel will most accurately deliver Clare’s intended complexities of Hodge’s character to the big screen. It will be interesting to see how director Harald Zwart brings this scene to life. During production when Clare couldn’t share actual character pictures she got creative by sharing pictures of various actors hands. In one shot she shared an image of Hugin but it is unclear if this character will be played by an actual bird or a CGI image. My hope and guess is both.

Tita, TMI News en Español: Hugin is a character that from the beginning freaked me out. He’s always looking suspiciously to everybody and you never know what he’s going to do next. In chapter 19th get to know a lot of things: Hodge is a traitor, is working with Valentine, and Hugin is such a despicable animal, because when Hodge says “Hugin” to him, he directly knows he has to attach Clary and get the mortal cup for him in order to continue with his master’s plan.

This chapter is…. illuminating, evil, and sad for the reader, and I really hope we’ll be able to see this part of the book in the movie.

What are your thoughts? How excited are you to see this scene on screen? How do you think this scene will unfold in the film? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

Very brilliantly phrased and interesting as well as amazing theories! as you all said, it’s another key scene where we find that Hodge is a shapeshifter(this is how certain characters are protrayed in books and movies in which a character seems a certian way but is really something else) THe audience will find that Hodge is a traitor and in cohorts with valentine. WE will all fee the character’s devestation and Valentine’s smugness. I think that Jamie, Lily, Hodge, Valentine, Harold, the crew (including make up crew) and the writing will portray this brilliantly! It could be as follows.

Jace, Clary and Hodge are amid in deep dicussion where Hodge reveals his true thoughs. Jace abd clary are confused where the scene make may the audience’s blood turn cold. Hodge orders Hugin and we hear Jace’s alarmed shout of concern for Clary, and a close up of Clary’s expression of horror as the bird swoops at her and her arms rasing to her face. We then can maybe see an unconscious Jace and clary’s concern. the rest of the events unfodld(I’ll save more of my thoughts when you guys do the bit where were first officialy meeet valentine appears). i hope they do the romantic interlude that takes place where alec is in the infirmary before Hodge pulls Jace aside! that is important for the chemistry too and also perhaps we will get to see how how Jace is knocked unconicuos as a movie can protray many character perspectives at once. this segment is getting me even more pumped for the movie!
