Movie Monday #36: Clary and Jocelyn have an arguement

Movie Monday

We are less than seven months from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanolfor a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 36: Clary and Jocelyn have an arguement

Alyssa, TMI Source: In the movie–just like the book–this scene will appear to be completely normal with no hints of dark supernatural forces waiting in the wings. But also like the book I believe the audience will see that Jocelyn (the lovely Lena Headey) is hiding something from Clary (Lily Collins). It’s just enough of a hunch for the audience to think about it before they see what happens once Clary leaves. It’s a scene that’s so mundane–a daughter arguing with her mother–and yet everything about the scene is not. I feel this scene will be trimmed down due to time constraints but the essence of the scene should remain intact.

Amber, TMI Institute: Just like in the book, I feel that if they show the scene with Jocelyn and Clary arguing about moving then they’ll probably keep viewers in the dark as to why the move is needed. We won’t need to know the reasons why Jocelyn is persistent until the drama of her disappearance unfolds. So just like the story implies, I think it’s possible they’ll have this scene as a way to display some internal strife between mother and daughter and prep us for her being kidnapped.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: OK, I’m a big Lena Headey fan and was beyond thrilled when she was cast to play Jocelyn. To me, her casting was one of the signs at how much faith Sony has in the ‘The Mortal Instruments.’ Jocelyn’s character is so complex and faceted. She is someone that is slowly revealed to us throughout the series. I’m most excited to see Lena portray this role throughout the franchise (fingers-crossed.) Back to the question at hand, Clary and Jocelyn’s fight is the only scene where we see these two interact. Sure Clary talks to her briefly on the phone but we don’t “see” Jocelyn, though I wouldn’t be surprised if we do in the film. The fight will be our only chance to see what Headey brings to Jocelyn in this film, unless the script made opportunities for flashbacks. This scene shows us how sheltering Jocelyn is to Clary and gives background as to why Clary isn’t quick to answer her phone when Jocelyn calls. This scene will be early in the film and our first real glimpse at Jocelyn Fray on the big screen. I can’t wait to see Headey’s portrayal of the overly protective and loving Jocelyn Fray. Just another, of many really great scenes to look forward to!

Tita, TMI News en Español: Clary’s argument with the mother about spending the summer holidays into a farm in the middle of nowhere is something Clary does not like at all in this moment. She has plans for this summer and her mother wants to ruin them, so Clary fights, as she always do for what she wants. How hard is going to be to see that fight between mother and daughter in the movie? Is Clary going to hear what Jocelyn talks with Luke about “strange things” happening to her? Can’t wait to find out!

What are your thoughts? How do you think this scene will unfold in the film? Will it be similar to the book? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.

  1. i can’t wait to see how the lovely lena and lily will portray the mother-daughther dynmaic in the relationship! I think that they will do a terrific job portraying this scene when they’re arguing. Readers know why Jocelyn wants to pack and head to the farm as valentine and his men are looking for the,. Of course, I think we’ll understand why Clary’s ticked and we don’t blame her. The audience may know that something is going that Clary doesn’t know about but they won’t fully know about it either. I think that the essence will be intact but it may be a bit shorter in the book

  2. This scene is pretty important. This scene gives you, the audience, a glance of what kind of relationship Clary and Jocelyn has. It also introduces us to Luke, Madame Dorothea, the gold-green eyes like a cat of Magnus. This is also the reason why Clary would get to use one of the demon tracking device (and gets to kill a demon) Clary takes from Jace when she meets him in front of Java Jones where she and Simon has coffee and was listening to Eric and the band perform. Pretty important to be cut out!
