Movie Monday #39: Blue-Haired Demon

Movie Monday

We are less than six months away from the theatrical release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally-bestselling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other Mortal Instruments fansites (TMI InstituteMundie Moms,TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. from the book and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 39: Blue-Haired Demon

Alyssa, TMI Source: The first person we are introduced to in City of Bones is the blue-haired demon as he’s trying to sweet-talk the bouncer to enter the Pandemonium Club. Essentially this is where the story begins–not only City of Bones, but The Mortal Instruments. While the blue-haired demon is only featured in one chapter before he meets his demise at the hands of the Shadowhunters, he plays a significant role in the story. He’s the one that attracts Clary’s attention and unknowingly drags her into the Shadow World.

From the teaser trailer we can see that the Pandemonium scene won’t play out exactly as it does in the book–with the biggest difference here being that Jace kills the blue-haired demon in the middle of the club instead of in the supply closet. It will be interesting to see if we will see from the demon’s perspective as we do in the book or if we follow Clary.

Amber, TMI Institute: The blue-haired demon is where readers are first introduced to the supernatural world in City of Bones. The attractive, mysterious boy gains the attention right off the bat. He’s the reason Jace, Izzy and Alec are in Pandemonium that night when the two world collide – when Clary is introduced to the Shadowhunters. Chad Connell portrays the blue hair demon in the movie. I’m really excited to see him in the role, as that scene will set the tone for the entire film.

Katie, Mundie Moms: Oooh the blue hair demon! This character stood out to me when he was first introduced in City of Bones, and given that his blue hair was mentioned I figured he was going to play a certain role in the book, and I just didn’t think he would play the role he did.  We all know what a crucial scene it was when Jace kills blue hair demon boy. I’m thrilled that this was a scene that was filmed for the movie. I think it’s important that this scene and the “blue hair demon” are apart of the movie, because it’s the first time Clary first sees Jace, and Jace realizes Clary is more than just a mundane. I’m excited to see how Chad Connell plays this character. After all, his character is the reason why Jace and Clary inadvertently meet in the first place.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: The blue-haired demon really pulls both the readers and Clary (Lily Collins) into the Shadowhunter’s world. The first time I read Clare’s “City of Bones” I thought that this character was simply a great way to set the Pandemonium Club setting. I remember loving how she used a character to set the feel of the scene, of course it didn’t take long to see that there was more to the club goer. Then the second time I read “City of Bones” I caught this: “The boy’s wide eyes were way too bright green, Clary noticed: the color of antifreeze, spring grass/ Colored contact lenses, probably.” Having read the book, I know that this is Clary starting to notice things beyond the glamour.

I’m guessing that we will see the blue-haired demon in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” He is important to Clary’s introduction to Jace and while somethings are certain to differ from the book due to edits, I don’t see why this demon’s appearance couldn’t be kept true to the book. Of course we know from the first teaser trailer that it looks like Jace stabs the demon (we don’t see the demon in the trailer) in the club versus in the back closet.

Tita, TMI News en EspañolCan I say that my first impression about the blue haired guy was that Clary was going to fall in love with him? She described him as a good looking guy, but then we discover that he’s one demon and Jace comes into the scene and everything changes 😉 Well, I’m glad to know that with the few stills we saw and the teaser trailer, the blue haired demon will be in the movie. The only fact that the studio respects this fact is something big in my opinion, something that show fans that this project is going to be very faithfull to the book. Can’t wait to proof my theory 😉

What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see how big a role the blue-haired demon plays in the film? Join in on the discussion!

Check back next Monday for the next edition of Movie Monday.
