We are now just four months away from the release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and there is plenty of excitement on the way leading up to its Aug. 23 release.
It was a busy month for the fandom between the five-month and four-month mark of the highly-anticipated theatrical release.
The theatrical trailer, which premiered at WonderCon on March 30, debuted online to much fan fervor. City of Bones was even a worldwide trending topic on Twitter shortly after the trailer’s release on April 1.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was featured in Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Preview Issue, which featured a new still, and even garnered a mention on the cover with the likes of Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby and Star Trek.
Cassandra Clare, Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower and Kevin Zegers represented The Mortal Instruments at WonderCon on March 30, where the new trailer and new character posters premiered. They also took part in a panel where they talked about the film.
It was confirmed that The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes and The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass will be filmed back-to-back if they are greenlit. This is dependent upon the success of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
There was also some exciting news regarding the prequel film The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Angel. Stephanie Sanditz is penning the screenplay and the search for a director is underway. Of course, an Infernal Devices movie is dependent upon the success of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
There were two days of Mortal Instruments re-shoots in Toronto on April 11 and 12 and a fan heard that a possible studio shoot in Los Angeles was up next.
Clare and director Harald Zwart attended the LA Times Festival of Books on April 20 for the “Mortal Instruments Page to Screen” panel. They shared a lot of inside information from the movie, including an extra scene we’ll see in the film.
There was some major movie news this month, as well. Atli Örvarsson replaced Gabriel Yared as composer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
It was also revealed that Universal Republic will be producing the official Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack, which is due out Aug. 20. Zwart revealed that they are still talking with DJs and artists and Clare said that the production company had sent her a list of artists to look over and sound off on.
There was major merchandise news this month. The covers for the movie tie-in editions of City of Bones, the Official Illustrated Movie Companion and Shadowhunter’s Guide were unveiled on Entertainment Weekly.
We got a first look at the mega mini kits from Running Press, which features an Angelic power rune pendant, temporary rune tattoos, magnets and a mini book, and hits stores on July 30. The Bookseller also previewed some new merchandise coming out in the months after City of Bones.
Sony Pictures promoted The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 17. There was no new footage screened, but they did show the theatrical trailer and there were lots of posters all around the convention center.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was featured on Extra Weekend, where Lily Collins and Cassandra Clare discussed the film at Clare’s Los Angeles Clockwork Princess signing on March 21.
