Entertainment Weekly grades the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES poster

Entertainment Weekly is breaking down the posters for this summer’s upcoming movies, including The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, out Aug. 23.

Back in November, fans first got a glimpse at the teaser poster, which depicts Downworld and the mundane world, as well as illustrates the tagline “There is a world hidden within our own.”

Check out Entertainment Weekly‘s assessment of the teaser poster:

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Message: ”We swear this isn’t a craven Twilight knockoff. We swear.”
The Assessment: Who can blame Hollywood for trying to grab a piece of that sweet, sweet YA-novel-adaptation pie? But give the Mortal Instruments poster some credit for opting for a big distinctive visual. The tagline is a bit boilerplate-fantasy, but you’ll definitely turn upside-down at least once to get a look at that bizarre city.
Grade: B

  1. What!? Okay, they need to stop putting in the word “Twilight” when they compare The Mortal Instruments. All of a sudden Twilight is a big hit, with vampire and werewolves, and now any supernatural movie, is suddenly a Twilight adaptation of it. Come on people! They did not create vampires and werewolves at all. Anyways, they deserve an A+, not a B on the poster. -.-

Totally agree. How could it get anyhing less than an A? It’s awesome? Anyway, no one even likes Twilight any more. Everyone makes fun of it, but not the Mortal Instrumens!!!!!

    • Honestly these people don’t really know what they’re talking about, they think that everything that comes from YA genre is a Twilight ripoff, and anything that is from this genre is all alike… Boy, will they be heavenly surprised and yes it does deserve an A… but since TMI has only just started to be noticed maybe we shouldn’t be that mad I mean it’s not like they know the magic of the shadowhunters just yet.

  2. “Oh, another YA adaptation! It must be something like Twilight” Well it’s not. So can we please stop putting Twilight as an example?
And whoever has read these books knows that this poster is perfect for the film, as well as that tagline. It’s quite literally.

  3. Stop comparing The Mortal Instruments and Twilight…It’s a lot different…and they should rate the poster with A…

  4. I hate that everyone compares TMI to Twilight…I was a big fan of Twilight but then I grew up and I realized that (in my opinion) the book is not that great. Clary is the biggest bad a**! LOL! But the story is so different from Twilight! So please people!, stop comparing, it’s hurtful..

  5. Yeah, I get you, I too was a twilight fan, but I’m so over it. After BD2 came out, I first came across the CoB trailer, then read the book and there was no going back ever since. I couldn’t stop reading! I kept craving for what’s coming next and read all 5 books and TID in a week. And then I reread them all from the start. CC’s writing is THAT addicting! There’s nothing out there like her books. Seriously. I hope she NEVER stops writing!

it’s awesome but the poster deserves an a and while there are some simliarties it’s not twilighht. by that i mean that both clary and bella discover something new about the world

I think the person who wrote this should actually read the book or see the movie before giving their opinion on what the movie is or isn’t comparable to. I don’t have anything against Twilight… really I don’t, but the City of Bones is such a different animal with a very different story and a different message. Same goes for the “boiler-plate tagline” and “bizarre city,” read the book before you judge it will make more sense. This poster should definitely have gotten an A, suits the City of Bones perfectly.

    A+

  9. The Mortal Instruments wishes it could be Twilight.

  10. It deserves an A+. Your argument is invalid.
P.S. The Mortal Instruments IS NOT TWILIGHT. Sparkly vampires are against the Accords!
