6 Scenes We Want to See in ‘CITY OF ASHES’

COA

Earlier this week, Constantin Film announced that The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, the sequel to the upcoming The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones out Aug. 23, would begin production this fall with director Harald Zwart and cast returning.

With the excitement surrounding that news, the ladies at TMI Source got to discussing what scenes we were most excited to see translated from book to film in Cassandra Clare’s second installment of The Mortal Instruments.

After a lot of deliberating we were able to narrow it down to just six (talk about difficult).

Here are the 6 scenes we want to see in City of Ashes:

1. Seelie Court

Chapter 8

I think it’s safe to say that the Seelie Court scene is the one scene that we are all looking forward to for multiple reasons. The Faeries are one Downworlder that are not explored too much in City of Bones. I can’t wait to see how they bring the Seelie Court from the page to the screen. From the mundanes half-dead dancing to entertain to the curtain made from live butterflies, but aside from the set itself there is so much that happens in that scene that is crucial to the entire plot of not only City of Ashes but The Mortal Instruments as a whole.

I can’t wait to see the Seelie Queen and how she is portrayed, the struggle that Clary and Jace will have to go through when she ‘closes her eyes and thinks of England. I REALLY hope that they show the part of deciding who is going to kiss who. But above all, I can’t wait to see the emotional turmoil that Clary, Jace and Simon have to go through after the Seelie Court. This is where our actors will shine and where the audience who hasn’t read the books will understand a little of what we went through while reading the books! -Megan

2. Simon’s Death and Rebirth

Chapter 9

The scene where Raphael shows up on the Institute doorstep with a dead Simon is a moment that I am anxiously looking forward to seeing portrayed on the big screen. I really hope that it stays true to the way it plays out in the book because of the magnitude of the situation. Clary’s reaction–that bloodcurling scream, her protecting him from Jace–is one that chilled me in the book and I cannot wait to see Lily take on that scene.

The following sequence is just as emotionally powerful. I’m looking forward to Simon’s rebirth as a vampire and everything that happens in the Jewish cemetery. From Clary and Jace’s conversation to Simon clawing out of his grave and attacking Clary. Robert Sheehan will surely shine in that scene. It’s an emotional sequence of events that’s sure to have the audience on the edge of their seats and cement an even bigger emotional bond between the audience and the story. -Alyssa

3. Alec and Magnus on the truck

Chapter 19

There are glimpses of Alec and Magnus in City of Bones and we know that they’ll have an additional scene in the movie, but I feel like City of Ashes really got ‘Malec’ started. Megan has already mentioned the Fearless Rune scene where Alec tells his parents that he – as a Shadowhunter – is dating a Downworlder and in Chapter 19 we get to see Alec and Magnus alone on the truck. They are right in the middle of the huge battle against Valentine and his demons and after Alec fell over the side of the ship, Magnus jumped into the East River to save him. We see how concerned Magnus is, we can read how he does things for Alec because he cares about him although he stops right before admitting his feelings. Magnus is portrayed as very caring but also as very human. In the book it is said: “Alec looked at Magnus, who was three hundred years old but had always looked timeless, as if he had stopped getting older around the age of nineteen. Now there were sharp lines cut into the skin around his eyes and mouth.” Alec realizes that this battle is exhausting for Magnus who is fighting with the Shadowhunters although he doesn’t have to so he offers him his strength so that the warlock can continue with his protection spells.

This scene and Alec’s realization will be great to watch on the big screen and I’m sure Kevin Zegers will absoutely nail it. We see’ll see a different, vulnerable side of Magnus and I can’t wait to see how Godfrey Gao will portray our favorite warlock as someone less than perfect. The truck scene will further establish the Alec/Magnus relationship and make fans long for even more in City of Glass. –Cat

4. Fearless Rune

Chapter 14

One scene I can’t wait to see on the screen is “The Fearless Rune” Scene where the group is first really experimenting with Clary’s ability. They gather round and Alec decides that he should be the one to have the fearless rune. The part that I can’t wait for is when Mayrse and Robert come in unexpectedly. Alec takes on probably what he has been most afraid of, telling his parents about being in love with Magnus. Of course Magnus stops him before anything can go too far the rune fades and Alec denies saying anything.

This scene on screen sounds absolutely delightful, it will be interesting to see how Kevin Zegers and Godfrey Gao play this scene, and their blossoming relationship. Also I hope this line makes it into the movie:

“‘What was what?” Alec sat up, holding his head. A look of alarm crossed his face. “Wait— did I say anything? Before I passed out, I mean.”

Jace snorted. “You know how we were wondering if that thing Clary did would work or not?” he asked. “It works all right.”‘ -Megan

5. Jace’s fear of watching Clary die on Valentine’s ship

Chapter 13

Throughout City of Ashes, Clary and Jace’s relationship is strained–between the longing and the guilt that comes with the knowledge that they are brother and sister–but that doesn’t diminish the depth of how much they care for each other. At one point in the story, Jace sneaks away from the group and goes to Valentine’s ship. While exploring a sudden feeling overtakes him: “The hair along the back of his neck was prickling, his every nerve screaming. Something was wrong.” Then Jace sees Clary standing before him, her white dress soaked with blood. She collapses into his arms and he is so overcome with grief as he watches her die in his arms.

We soon learn that Jace had encountered the Demon of Fear–Agramon, which projected his biggest fear in front of him. But in the moment it feels very real–for Jace and the audience. We haven’t even gotten to see the depth to which Jamie Campbell Bower understands Jace and I cannot wait to see him portray so many emotions–fear, sadness, guilt, confusion–in this scene. -Alyssa

6. “I’ll just be your brother from now on.”

Epilogue

Didn’t we all want to scream and hit Jace with something heavy when we read these words? Clary had just decided to tell Jace how much she truly cares about him, that she wants to be with him despite everything and now he is crushing her hopes and dreams with one simple sentence. It is clear that Jace wants something completely different, two pages before this painful statement, he tells Clary: “Every time you almost die, I almost die myself.”, and this shows his deep love for Clary, the desparation he feels when Clary is hurt. But Jace decides that this is selfish, he cannot hurt his other family members like that and loving Clary openly would also make him like Valentine, the father he now hates.

I can imagine that this will be one of the most powerful scenes in the movie. We will see the constant back and forth Jace and Clary have to endure because of their forbidden love and this scene will be the heartbreaking culmination of it – for now! I’m sure Lily and Jamie will blow us away with this scene. Due to the trailers we have already seen what kinds of emotions they are able to portray and if the MTV Movie Awards had a category for ‘Best Heartbreaking Moment’, we’d have a definite winner. –Cat

“You can close your eyes and think of England, if you like.”
“I’ve never even been to England,” she said, but she shut her eyelids. She could feel the dank heaviness of her clothes, cold and itchy against her skin, and the cloying sweet air of the cave, colder yet, and the weight of Jace’s hands on her shoulders, the only things that were warm. And then he kissed her.”
I love this scene I remember it was just so heartbreaking when I first read it, I can’t wait to see Lily and Jamie pull this off.

    Your choices are perfect!!!

  12. A very important scene that is not mentioned and is really pivotal is Jace saving Simon and turning him into a Daylighter and I’m really looking forward for Simon’s character development. Of course dealing with the “incest” and all the heartbreak, Clary’s talent exploration, Agramon, Malec and all the other scenes mentioned do need to be in the movie.
I can’t believe we are already talking about a CoA movie!! Is this really happening? *dances* 😀

    • It was on my list, Joy, but then I decided to go with Malec and Clace. 😉 It’s definitely important.

      • I replied to you, but my reply appears below 😦 I don’t know why this happens sometimes ever after I push the reply button?
        Anyway, and hi Cat! 🙂

  13. Yes the Seelie Court is a must see for me!!! One of my favorite episodes between Simon and Jace happens there.

  14. I love all of these scenes and pray that they all make it into the movie but one scene that I really think should be at least in the top ten is when they are all in the truck after the battle and the sun starts coming up. Clary realizes that this might be it for Simon that he might seriously die or turn into ashes or something. It was just a really powerful scene for me and then when you realize that he doesn’t die an you see him or imagine seeing him sitting\ standing in the sunlight and you just want to cry because he’s not really dead. Maybe it’s just me but I really love that scene

the scene where Simon drinks Jace’s blood. that’s an epic scene and it has to be in the film 🙂

  16. My favorite part in CoA is when Magnus sneaks Jace over to Lukes bookstore and somehow Alec, Maia, Luke, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, the Lightwood parents and the Inquisitor all end up crammed inside Lukes small house. It’s the scene where everyone realizes Clary can create runes. Alec’s fearless rune makes him almost come out to his parents. Love that scene.

Another is when the Inquisitor saves Jace’s life and dies. It was such an Ah-ha moment. We knew then that Jace was related to a Herondale. To Steven.

  17. All of the above scenes MUST make it into the film! But something I wish they’d put in there is the conversation b/w Jace and Clary, when she asks him “‘What do you want me to tell you? The truth? The truth is that I love Simon like I should love you, and I wish he was my brother and you weren’t, but I can’t do anything about that and neither can you!” If that part is in there, I can just positively SEE the emotion and turmoil pouring off of Clary and Jace, and I think that Lily & Jamie would portray it beautifully! Probably enough to make people shed a few tears…

  18. I will not see the movie if these senes in the movie i refuse

  19. I am excited to see those scenes, although you should have added the one when Imogen caught a glimpse of Jace’s birthmark or scar or whatever it was and knew he was Stephen’s ‘deceased’ son

  20. Well i think i would love to see when Jace escapes from the institute and that malachi configuration, to see him realize that he is not a normal shadowhunter afterall. The other escene i would love to see is when Clary is talking to Simon and Valentine comes after him, like it would keep everyone at the edge of their seats and in such a deep suspense. And the scene when Jace is on the Silent City and Clary, Alec and Izzy go to save him! Do you imagine it!? OH I WANT TO SEE IT SO BADLY!!!

    Okay, okay okay.
OF COURSE I WANT THE SEELIE COURT! While reading that I just couldn’t stay calm, I was wondering around the room, smiling, thinking ‘AWWWWWW GOD AHH’ the kiss is gonna be epic in that scene I can totally see it play BREath-TAKING. Oh God.
If Seelie Court isn’t there for me I’m gonna be like ‘EPIC FAILURE. YOU DISAPPOINTED ME HARALD. YES YOU HARALD. YOU DISAPPOINTING PERSON.’
But if it’s there for me I’m gonna be like ‘EPIC. CONGRATULATIONS HARALD. ONCE AGAIN YOU DIDN’T DISAPPOINT ME.’
