Harald Zwart talks ‘CITY OF ASHES’ casting, Jace’s eye color and answers more fan questions

Director Harald Zwart has always been great at interacting with the Mortal Instruments fandom, taking time out of his busy schedule (and putting together The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) to answer fan-submitted questions on Tumblr.
On Tuesday, June 11, Harald, who will return to direct The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes that is slated to begin production in the fall, took to Tumblr to answer more fan questions. Among the topics he addressed were City of Ashes casting, Jace’s eye color in City of Bones and whether or not Church is in the first film.

If Lily Collins has red hair, is petite, and has freckles, then yes, she will be Clary.
No Jessica, of course not. I didn’t reply to you. And I also cannot wait to watch Lily kick some ass! And I hope we do get to see her doing more of that and everything else that makes Clary being Clary in the upcoming films and no I’m definitely not talking about physical appearance…
It’s just that everything looks so perfect as it is and I’ll keep spreading positive feedback for the movie.
In fact if we as fans are not hopeful positive and optimistic what good can come of that? What do you think?
Okay, sorry. I got confused. -_- Dang it, with finals coming next week I’m so tired/busy. And yeah, Joy I agree with you. Fans should just stick with the director’s decision. They know better than us, and the actors/actresses can get hurt by the complaints. And, yeah, can’t wait to see Lily in action!! =D

Is that so hard for you??? And keep your judgement on matters that DO matter like the ACTING and AFTER YOU HAVE WATCHED THE FREAKING MOVIE. It’s ridiculous to say the least judging Lily for her height weight hair color and all the other staff you keep bringing up given the chance.

Ummm, Joy , if you’re talking to me, I was just telling Heidi that Lily is Clary. And I’m sorry if you took my comment as Lily hate. I actually can’t wait to see Lily as Clary in the upcoming movie and I do not hate Lily at all.
harold is so awesome and yay jace has golden eyes possibly. i’ll imagine it’ll be cgi. i still would have loved jace even if they were blue. and i’m glad they’re following the book, but enchancing it too

So happy about the possibility of Jace’s golden eyes! I’m thinking (and please bear with me here) that if, indeed Jamie couldn’t handle wearing contacts in the movie and has they’ve kept his eyes blue, maybe they will CGI them gold during his fighting scenes or whenever his emotions are heightened – like some sort of emphasis on his extra angel-blood kicking in. Maybe I’m way off and my imagination is running wild, but who knows? 🙂

Thank you so much Harald. There has never before been a movie director who has taken such time and effort to answer fan’s questions. NEVER (at least that I know of). We have been sooo spoiled by everyone involved with TMI. We are indeed very lucky and we do appreciate and love every little minute of everything!
Personally I don’t care what color Jamie’s eyes are. He’s got such beautiful blue eyes but I would love them even if they were purple or any other color!

I just can’t wait like joy said fans need to get behind this movie and stop worrying about ‘details’ like someone’s gripe the other day that lily was 3 inches to tall !!! Come on ….this movie will be great they don’t just give sequels the go ahead before the first is released!!! ‘Have a little faith’ ….do you see what I did there ??

It’s not like they cast a hideous appalling alien for crying aloud! And Cassie herself said she was really happy with Lily, then WHY NOT US??? Same goes for everyone else. I just love EVERYTHING so far!
I can’t wait for the movie in less than 2 months away. I REALLY HOPE THEY DO WHAT THEY DID WITH THE HUNGER GAMES DVD/ BLUE RAY ULTRA VIOLET DIGITAL DOWNLOAD. ESPECIALLY WITH THERE AMAZING SPECIAL FEATURES ON THE HUNGER GAMES DVD SET IM REALLY HOPING.
I think as we watch the film we will realise why all the actors were cast but I really can’t wait for Jamie to be jace he was born to play the part he has that quality about him and hearing we will see the golden eyes just makes it even better ….when he talks about jace you can tell he totally gets him ….love him !!
It just baffles me that out of the thousands of fans, each having their own personal interpretations of how these characters look, walk, talk, eat! That so many expect that their own idea of what the character should be like is right. It’s just freakin impossible find an actor to fit everyone’s DIFFERENT ideas of how thewill be. I for on trust Cassie when she assures us that these actors will be awesome. And am happy that enough people share my love of these books to make this movie possible. ( this isn’t directed at anyone just a random rant). 🙂
