New ‘City of Heavenly Fire’ snippet: Emma and Julian

We can already tell that we’re going to love Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn in The Dark Artifices. These two are adorable, as evidenced in a new snippet from City of a Heavenly Fire that Cassandra Clare shared.

Julian’s skin was cold, as if he’d been leaning out the window into the night air. She turned his hand and drew with her finger on his bare forearm. It was something they’d done since they were small children and didn’t want to get caught talking during lessons. Over the years they’d gotten so good at it that they could map out detailed messages on each other’s hands, arms, even their shoulders through their T-shirts.
D-I-D Y-O-U E-A-T? she spelled out.
Julian shook his head, still staring at Livvy and Ty. His curls were sticking up in tufts as if he’d been raking his hands through his hair. She felt his fingers, light on her upper arm. N-O-T H-U-N-G-R-Y.

City of Heavenly Fire will be released May 27.

Yup, I agree. That was just too cute for words 💕😊

  5. Emma and Julian are cute together. Are they at the Los Angeles Institute or still in Idris.

  6. So you know what I think I just realized? I think Julian might be named after Julian/Yukito from Card Captor Sakura. (Because he’s related to Jem, yes?)

I mean, Jem always, always ALWAYS reminded me of Yukito (and his relationship with Will always reminded me of Yukito’s with Toya somewhat, and the two even look similar to them). But it wasn’t really until Julian was named that it confirmed it for me. We’ll probably never know for sure, but it’s too big a coincidence for me to just believe it as that. Anyway, if there are any CCS fans here, do you think the same thing?

You know, now that I think about it, CC references a LOT of things in her work (Naruto, Angel Sanctuary, Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars, and Harry Potter, just to name a few), which I think is pretty cool (probs because I’m an anime geek like Simon and Clary are).

But while most people would think that was a sign of a “bad writer”, because she’s copying things, I don’t think that at all. Rather, I think she’s genre savvy, as TV Tropes would say, and knows that her work has similarities to other things. And she can even go as far as to hint what’s to come, via some of the things she puts in (as Angel Sanctuary, is pretty much EXACTLY Jace and Clary’s story). And IDK. I enjoy her putting some spins on iconic scenes, by throwing them into a different universe (KH actually did the same thing with the character Reno from Final Fantasy VII, by making someone similar to him in the KH universe named “Axel”. -shrugs-

Some other things I think she might have referenced is the TV show (and/or the books that it was based off of): Roswell. As there are two characters in that named Alex and Isabel, which is pretty much the same as the names “Alec” and “Isabelle” in TMI. Plus, the two Isabelle’s are so similar, that they might as well be the same person. LOL. And Isabelle’s relationship with Simon in TMI, is VERY similar to the relationship that Alex and Isabel had in Roswell.

Another thing she may or may not have referenced is a scene between Zidane and Garnet from Final Fantasy IX, as the Black Mage Village/Bedtime Story cutscene reminds me so very much of when Jace told Clary the falcon story in CoB. Plus, Zidane’s personality and even his appearance is just so very much Jace! And I could even see quite a bit of Garnet in Clary, but judge for yourselves:)

Anyway, sorry about this long post, and for getting off topic. Yeah…

    • I Don’t think Julian is related to Jem because Emma is related to Jem and if you look at the family tree on the inside cover of CP2, it shows that Emma’s great grandfather was/is Jem’s uncle.
