Emma and Clary talk about Jace in new ‘Lord of Shadows’ snippet
Yesterday, Cassandra Clare treated us to a mini Lord of Shadows snippet to celebrate Clary’s birthday and today Cassie has shared a longer snippet that (probably) links to yesterday’s:
Clary’s birthday is August 23rd, so it’s a bit late, but a tiny Clary and Emma snippet from Lord of Shadows:
“Clary, what are you not telling me?”
There was a long silence. Clary looked out toward the dark water, biting her lip. Finally, she spoke. “Jace asked me to marry him.”
“Oh!” Emma had already begun opening her arms to hug the other girl when she caught sight of Clary’s expression. She froze. “What’s wrong?”

I’s for sure like to know this myself. Why be so happy about Sizzy but not want to get married? We all know she clearly loves Jace…
Maybe she doesn’t want kids? Maybe she’s worried about how they’d be because of their connection to Valentine. Him being her dad, and raising Jace when he was little. She thinks they’d be too dysfunctional or she doesn’t want to raise a child as a warrior in training and doesn’t know how to tell Jace. I mean I get it, but it would also make me kind of sad. I’d love to see Jace as a dad. I think they’d be great parents someday. At any rate, I bet that’s why she doesn’t want to marry him.
I agree with Marie. I think that Clary may not want to raise a child in such a dangerous world, but she doesn’t know how to go about telling Jace.
I reckon she doesn’t love Jace anymore. While your first love may be your most epic, it isn’t always your last. We saw this with Stefan and Elena in TVD.

Is she already pregnant… or is she just scared to get married of how it went with her parents… she loves Jace…
Marie does have a strong point there, or maybe Clary thinks she might already be pregnant. That could put a hold on things too. Either way, I can’t wait for LoS!

I think she’s already pregnant. This would explain her hesitation in accepting Jace’s proposal. It would also be thing she hasn’t told anyone but Emma in the other snippet we got a couple of days ago. The one thing that doesn’t connect with this theory is that were given no hints of it in “the long conversation” at the end of Lady Midnight.
Yeah, I bet she’s pregnant, and panicking about having a crazy, warped Morgenstern baby. She probably feels she’s too young for kids as well.
The only reason I think she’s not pregnant is because since she created the birth control rune, she knows how to protect herself and in lady midnight Emma says something about how it lasts 3 months. I don’t see clary forgetting, though it’s possible being so busy running the institute, and I doubt she’d get pregnant on purpose without talking to Jace first. So since she made the rune to protect herself, and she’s likely not get prego on purpose without discussing it together, it seems less likely that she’s pregnant and that’s why she said no. That’s my thinking. Though I like the idea of them having a baby and will be sad if the reason she said no is because she doesn’t want kids. :(. Yeah I’m a super nerd. I’ve thought way too much about this. Ha!
I know a lot of people think she’s pregnant, and that was my initial thought, but what if it’s actually the opposite? What if she’s found out she can’t have kids? And as Shadowhunters they’re expected to have kids, but she can’t, and she doesn’t want Jace to be with someone who can’t have children, and maybe that’s why she’s so reluctant to accept?😫 But then again it could just be because she doesn’t want to get married. A lot of people don’t want to marry, and I think that’s acceptable but what if she just doesn’t know how to tell Jace? Idk:’)
Okay this may seem random but maybe she doesn’t want to get married because Magnus and Alec can’t get married yet and she would feel bad that like Simon and Izzy and then her and Jace were getting married while they can’t? Its probably not that but just a thought. Idk what else it would be besides maybe the pregnant thing but idk about that because like people have said, the birth control rune. I mean Im like 99.9% sure that its not that she doesn’t want to be with Jace cause that’d be ridiculous.
That’s actually a pretty good point, and I would be happy that with option too😂😅 but I really like that theory👍🏻☺️
Idk I had a theory that maybe she doesn’t want to get married because of how her mother and Valentine ended up. I’m not saying that she doesn’t want to marry Jace specifically, but maybe she’s afraid that if they get married so young, they might end up like her parents or something like that.

I think she does want to marry Jace, absolutely. But something is holding her back. And I don’t think a basic fear would do it, like cold feet. I think not being able to have kids is valid, but I think Cassie is going to throw something crazy at us that we wouldn’t guess. She and Jace are going to be together, it’s just a matter of what obstacle has to be overcome first.
I think she’s worried that something is going to happen and break them apart. Every time something big happens they have problems. I would really like Clary to be pregnant though that would be a fun plot twist! I mean with the places they end up um… Tangling in the sheets it wouldn’t be too surprising lol
I feel as though Cassie wouldn’t do something with children again because there are already two Malec babies and SO MANY Balckthorns. I think it will be something no one will expect like Clary have a terminal illness, not my theory though. I think it isn’t something that will break them up for ever or cause one of their deaths because Emma(emmmabooks) gave it five stars on Goodreads that is her OTP and they are her favourite characters. I think a potential theory is that Clary has been offered a position on the council that requires her to go live in Idris and she doesn’t know how to tell Jace because he heads the Institute and loves it, she doesn’t want to make him have to leave that behind and she doesn’t want to break up but she thinks have a long distance relationship would be hard. I believe she is overall confused as to what to do because she wants to follow her dreams as a shadowhunyer but she also doesn’t want to hurt Jace.
