Cassandra Clare shares information about bonus content in first editions of ‘Lord of Shadows’
Cassandra Clare’s Lord of Shadows, the second book in her The Dark Artifices trilogy, is published in exactly 111 days and yesterday Cassie took to her Instragram to share some information about bonus content:
New runes, so exciting!
Barnes & Noble’s edition will have a different bonus content. Their exclusive edition
includes a deleted scene from Lord of Shadows, in which Emma and Julian, Shadowhunter warriors and soul mates, meet on Blackfriars Bridge in London.
Further questions about first editions? We or rather Cassie got answers for you (we’ve only highlighted the important bits):
Okay, this is an explanation of what a first edition is, what editions will have special content, and how to get those editions, whatever country you may be in or dimension you may inhabit. PLEASE read the whole thing before contacting me with questions! I will love you forever.
What’s a first edition?
Publishers print books in batches called print runs. Every book printed in the first batch of books printed is a first edition. “A first edition book is a copy that was printed in the first print run, when the book was originally published. If the books sell out, the publisher will authorize the printing of a new batch, called the second edition. When that stock is depleted, the next print run is called the third edition, and so on.“
How do I get a first edition?
A first edition is, again, every book that is one of the first batch of books printed by a publisher. There are a limited amount. […[ The best way to make sure you get a first edition is to pre order. You can do this online.
If you do not want to order online, you can go into any bookstore now and tell them that you wish to pre-order a first edition. They will call you when it comes in. Bookstores can do that. They put in their own order with the publisher, and the publisher makes sure they get those first editions. You can even do this at Walmart. You can do this in any country, in any bookstore where English language books are sold.
Cassie obviously doesn’t know whether foreign language editions will have bonus content so contact your country’s publisher and ask them.
We are so pumped for the new runes and can’t wait to read Lord of Shadows with the bonus content! 😀
Some Lord of Shadows pre-order links (hardcover edition) for you:
UPDATE #1:
“I’ve preordered the LoS Barnes and Noble exclusive edition. Does that still include the new runes?”
UPDATE #2:
We asked Cassie whether the runes will also be included in the UK edition and she said
the UK is telling me yes, they will incorporate the runes in their first editions.
What does this mean for the UK? I planned on getting a US copy of the B&N edition. Because I want both does this mean I’d have to get a UK copy from Waterstones?
Thanks
I don’t know whether Waterstones has any plans for Lord of Shadows. I’ll ask someone who works for Simon and Schuster UK.
The UK edition will have the runes as well, that’s all I know for now. It’s still a while to go before LoS is released so I’m sure we’ll know more in the next few months.
Does online stores include Amazon?
Yes.
That’s what I thought. In that case, I’m gonna pre-order mine. Also can we talk that Heavenly Fire rune is?
Wait does that mean if you preorder on Amazon (I already did that like a couple months ago), you get a rune?
If you preordered the book (hardcover), you’ll get a first edition and the runes. -> The runes “will be printed on the back of the jackets of all English language FIRST EDITIONS of Lord of Shadows.”
I know you already answered this, but I just want to double check! Will the B&N edition have runes in the jacket AND their own content or just their own content and no runes? Just trying to figure out where to order from! Thank you!!!
Yes, look at Cassie’s tweet right at the end of our post.
Thank you!!!
I’ve already preordered the book. But I’m not sure whether it was hardcover or not. Is paperback ok? And my country doesn’t have Barns & Noble. Am I not able to get a different bonus contents that Barns & Noble’s edition has?
All first editions will have the runes although I don’t know whether that also includes paperback editions. If you’ve ordered online check your orders or if you’ve ordered in a store ask them whether you’ll get a paperback or hardcover edition.
thank you! BIg help
Will there be an online publication of the bonus content? I always preorder and try to get a First Edition, but the bookstores and Amazon in Germany don’t offer the B&N version. I remember that this was the case with the family tree in TID 3 and I would appreciate it so much if it would be possible to at least read the bonus chapter online. Thanks a lot ❤
Don’t worry, Flo, the bonus chapter will be online eventually.
