Cassandra Clare talks tentative schedule for her future books
Cassandra Clare has been busy writing books for her The Shadowhunter Chronicles for over a decade now. Almost four years ago she also added her middle grade series Magisterium, co-written with her friend Holly Black, to her list of published books and she is by no means done with writing new books about Shadowhunters and Downworlders. The sequel to Lady Midnight, Lord of Shadows, is going to be published in a little over two months, Cassie’s adult trilogy about Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, The Eldest Curses, is currently being written with Wesley Chu and we know that Cassie is also working on Chain of Gold, the first book in her The Last Hours trilogy. On top of that is the series that is going to conclude The Shadowhunter Chronicles, a trilogy called The Wicked Powers which is set after The Dark Artifices. That’s eleven Shadowhunter books and two Magisterium books for the next x years! How many years are we talking of and what’s the publication order? Cassie answered these questions on her tumblr:
So, the tentative schedule I’m currently working from:
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices Book One): March 2016
Lord of Shadows: (The Dark Artifices Book Two): May 2017
The Lost Book of the White (book one of The Eldest Curses, otherwise known as “the Malec books”) : Late 2017/early 2018.
Chain of Gold: 2018. (The Last Hours, Book One) No specific release date has been set. I would guess late in the year.
Queen of Air and Darkness (The Dark Artifices Book Three) 2019
The Black Book of the Dead (book two of The Eldest Curses, otherwise known as “the Malec books”) : 2019
Chain of Iron: 2020
The Red Scrolls of Magic: (book three of The Eldest Curses, otherwise known as “the Malec books”) : Late 2020
Chain of Thorns: 2021
The Wicked Powers: Currently unscheduled!
(Other books include the CoB coloring book, April 2017, the CoB 10th Anniversary Special Edition this fall, and Magisterium: the Silver Mask, this October.)
So there you have it! 2021 plus three The Wicked Powers books so The Shadowhunter Chronicles could end in 2024 or 2025.
Which book are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments and if you want to, share how old you will be when The Shadowhunter Chronicles is over.
Thank you for sharing!
squee! Her output is just amazing. 2 books a year! It’s going to be so hard to wait for the end of TDA. Especially if LoS is as heartbreaking as I expect it to be! In a lot of ways I’m really glad I wasn’t introduced to her books until right before CoHF released. I could binge read all of TID and TMI! 😀
I’m looking forward to the “Malec books!” And I’ll be around 24 when the series end, and I’ll be extremely sad! 😭😂😭
omg i just realized i’m gonna be EIGHTEEN or even NINETEEN when queen of air and darkness comes out! (i’m sixteen right now and i could barely wait between lady midnight and lord of shadows! *CRIES*
Oooh thanks for this! in 2025 I’ll be 30…no I’m not ready. (For both the books and the age) I’m excited for The Lost Book of the White because Malec but I’m even more excited atm for Lord of Shadows. I really want to see where things go with Ty and Kit but I also want to know more about Kit.
I’ll be 53 when the series ends….. I eagerly await every book and I’m so glad Cassie is publishing 2 a year because I just love her writing and cannot get enough of her books.
I am going to be so devastated when the series ends.. !!!
Thank you so much for sharing!! I can’t wait for each and every one of them! I love Cassie’s books and characters and don’t know what I’m gonna do once it’s all over! I am going to be 38 in 2025, but I’m still hoping she will find more stories to tell. 🙂
I’m going to be 38 as well and I also can’t wait for Cassie’s books 🙂
It’s awesome to see so many adult readers, YA is for every age group!
I can’t wait!! I think I’m most excited for Chain of Gold and the rest of the Last Hours series (but honestly, I’m extremely excited for all of these) because I love stories set in London.
I’ll be 25 or 26 if she’s finishing around them! Omg
Thank you for the exciting news on what’s coming! I’ll be 65 when the series could potentially end, and I’ve been with the genre since CoB first started it all. I’m looking forward to all of it! I really enjoy Cassandra’s writing style, and the delicious inter-connections between the stories and the generations of Shadowhunters 🙂
I’ll be 20 or 21 by the time the series is over and I’ll be so sad.
I am eagerly anticipating The Eldest Curses but Chain of Gold is what I can not wait for. I love the books set in London and the time period. II will be about 45 when the chronicles end ❤
i really want you to write more about clace and their future/relationship. the main reason i read tmi was because of them and its kind of like your abandoning them and apparently writing a WHOLE ENTIRE SERIES CENTERED AROUND MALEC. PLEASE WRITE MORE ABOUT JACE AND CLARY OR JUST THE MAIN TMI CHARACTERS. I MISS THEM.
We’re not Cassandra Clare, but you can message her on tumblr since her ask box is open at the moment: cassandraclare.tumblr.com/ask
And FYI, Clary and Jace are still around in Cassie’s other novels; they’ve been in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and Lady Midnight. They are happy. Would you rather Cassie started a new trilogy about them and came up with more heartbreak for Clace? The couple was epic in TMI, but other couples (like Malec or Jemma) have an epic love story as well and I think these stories deserve to be told.
Oh my god! I’ll be 43 in 2025!!!! I’m still completely fangirling over all these upcoming books! 🙂 My daughter will be 13, maybe old enough to start reading them? 🙂
13 sounds old enough to me but it’s of course totally up to you as her mum. I think it really helps that you have read the books since you can then judge whether 13 really is ok 🙂
I was around 13 when I started to read them and I do find that I was old enough for them, though I was abnormally mature for my age and that was why I was aloud to read them. I do believe the books are not fit for all 13 year olds — it honestly depends on her maturity and character.
I started reading them when I was 10-current age. It really just depends on maturity. (I’ve read CoB, CoA, CoG, TID trilogy, and shadowhunter’s codex. On my way to read the complete Shadowhunter Chronicles!!) I’ll be 19 years old on 2025.
Already dreading that 2 year wait for Queen…
In 2025 I will be 23
I know it’s been a while since this was posted but I will be either 24 or 25 when it is predicted it will end. I’m so excited for more books and honestly The Wicked Powers it was I’m most excited for because it’s been confirmed that Ty, Kit, and Dru will be the main characters. However, I can’t wait to learn more about Malec.
I will be eighteen when they END!!! Can’t wait for them to come out but I don’t know about the eighteen part!!! 😦
Please don’t make me wait for two years to complete the Dark Artifices. I can’t believe how you ended the Lord of shadows – I’m in shock.
dang, I didnt realize she had SO much going on! I’m glad but also i cant wait! I like to binge read her books, so that’ll suck! I’ll be 42 when she’s supposedly done! Thats crazy! But hey, she’s like Stephen King, I’m sure she’ll continue to write some more good stuff. I’m just intrigued with what Clary & Jace’s secret mission is and why she keeps having those dreams! I’m still all about Jace & Clary!
I’ll be 25 or 26 when the last book comes out. I can’t wait for all the books to be out so I can read them all back to back :’) but at the same time it’ll be so sad to never get a new book again. AAAAAH so many feels (can’t wait for QoAaD) and I so can’t wait for the Malec books they’ll be so interesting to read. 🙂
I’m going to be 22!!😱😱😱😱😱
I would have finished college and be working by the time the shadow hunter chronicles is done….
I will be 62 and I hope to still be alive. However my main comcern is for the 3rd book of the Dark Artifices please forget the other books and complete that series first.
I’m going to b 68 this September and I can’t wait for her next books to come out. Can’t get enough reading!! Please keep on going and if you can be a little bet faster, I’m not getting any younger. Terrific job!!
I’ll be 70 when Queen of Air and Darkness comes out. You’re books are for everyone, including those young at heart.
I realise that I will be 15 when I get to read the Queen of Darkness and Air. Cassandra Clare please hurry up.I need to read that book. I can’t wait that long. And thank you for writing such amazing books .I love your books. Especially the Mortal Instuments and Clary Definitely Clary😀😢.I wish you can sign my books and I am currently writing my OWN fiction book .Can you please give me some tips.I am mot really good in English.😕
I just now finished reading Lord of Shadows and cannot believe I have to wait until 2019 to read the last book, Queen of Air. Very disappointing. I may not even be alive then.
Glenda, please read our other articles about Cassie’s book schedule. There have been a lot of changes and Queen of Air and Darkness is going to be released in fall 2018.
I’m going to be 36 when the series ends, and I am eager to read every book that comes out up until then. I absolutely love cassie and her shadowhunter books and will be sad when the series ends, for I can never get enough of them. Ill be a Shadowhuner fan forever!!
I just now realized that i will be either in college or just getting out of it by the time these books will be completed!
I am so ready for the quewn of air and darkness!! So ready!!
If it all ends in 2025 I will be 74. I am impressed with a writer who can grab the attention of someone my age and hang on to it the way Cassandra Clare has with her books about an obviously younger generation. Congratulations.
I’ll be 24 or 25!! I’ll be so sad when it ends, I love the universe she has created in her books so much!!
I AM GOING TO READ EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE BOOKS! I don’t know how i missed all of this information, I feel so out of the loop!!
I’ll be 21 or 22
