Am 16. Oktober hatte ich dank Cassandra Clares deutschem Verlag die Gelegenheit, Cassie in Köln zu interviewen. In mehr als 20 Minuten sprachen wir über ihr neues Buch Lord of Shadows, weitere zukünftige Buchprojekte, ihre besondere Recherche für Die Dunklen Mächte und mehr. Ich hatte sehr viel Spaß bei dem Interview und möchte mich ganz herzlich bei Cassie und dem Goldmann Verlag bedanken.

Noch zwei kleine Notizen vorab: 1. Ich kenne Cassie mittlerweile schon seit mehr als fünf Jahren, weswegen ich sie in der deutschen Übersetzung meines Interviews duze. 2. SPOILER für Lord of Shadows! Ihr wurdet gewarnt 🙂

„Lord of Shadows“ hat ein sehr schockierendes Ende mit einigen überraschenden Todesfällen. Wie schwierig war es, eine Figur zu entwickeln mit dem Wissen, dass sie nur erschaffen wurde, um zu sterben und war es anders, über diese Figur zu schreiben als Figuren, die immer noch am Leben sind?

Ich denke nicht, dass es großartig anders war, Livvy zu kreieren als eine Figur zu erschaffen, von der ich wusste, dass sie die ganze Buchreihe überlebt. An einem gewissen Punkt musst du dich immer von deinen Figuren verabschieden, also ist die Frage eher, wann und wo du dich von ihnen verabschiedest. Bei Livvy habe ich es früher getan, als die Fans es erwartet hatten und früher als ich mich von z.B. Ty, Diana, Kit oder Emma verabschieden werde. Sie musste allerdings trotzdem eine vollkommen entwickelte Figur sein. Sie durfte trotzdem jemand sein, der Dinge ersehnte, sie hatte Ziele und Träume. Sie hat trotzdem lustige und unerwartete Dinge getan. Ich hoffe, sie war eine vollkommen abgerundete Figur, die die Leser mochten. Das allerletzte, was man von den Lesern hören möchte ist, ‚Oh, ich wusste, dass diese Figur sterben wird, weil sie einfach nicht so interessant und ausgearbeitet war.‘ Das wollte ich nicht für Livvy, also habe ich sie von Anfang an genauso kreiert wie all die anderen Figuren.

Ich habe sie wirklich geliebt und bin immer noch traurig.

Sie war eine ganz Liebe.

Das war sie wirklich. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es wahrscheinlich eine große Herausforderung war, ihren und Roberts Tod zu schreiben. Gab es noch andere wirklich große Herausforderungen während du „Lord of Shadows“ geschrieben hast?

Jedes neue Buch birgt neue Herausforderungen. Für mich war es auf jeden Fall eine Herausforderung Julian zu schreiben. Er ist eine sehr andere Art von Held, als Will oder Jace es waren. Er hat definitiv das Potential für eine düstere Seite, aber zugleich ist er mehr wie eine Vaterfigur und hat mehr für andere getan, als wahrscheinlich Will oder Jace als wir sie zuerst kennenlernten. Julian hat diese interessante Doppelseitigkeit: er opferte einen großen Teil seines Lebens für andere Leute, aber gerade weil er das gemacht hat und weil er es tun musste, als er noch so jung war, ist er auch jemand geworden, der sehr zielstrebig ist. Dieses große Opfer kann nicht umsonst gewesen sein und er ist bereit, wortwörtlich alles zu tun, um die Kinder und seine Familie zu beschützen. Ich denke, wir sind gerade an diesem kritischen Augenblick, an dem diese Bereitschaft uns wirklich Sorgen macht und uns fragen lässt, wie weit er gehen wird.

Oh ja, wir sind wirklich sehr besorgt.

Nicht wahr? Wir fragen uns, was er nicht alles tun könnte.

Ja, er kennt schließlich jemanden, der von sich sagt, dass er den Parabatai-Bund brechen kann.

Und in „Queen of Air and Darkness“ wird er herausfinden, wie man es macht.

Oh Gott.

Ja, er ist nicht uninteressiert.

Der Parabatai/Verbotene Liebesgeschichte Handlungsbogen ist wahrscheinlich der beliebteste in „Die Dunklen Mächte“ und ich hatte wirklich viel Spaß an ihm, aber ich liebe auch Kit, Ty und Livvys Freundschaft. Wie anders wird diese Freundschaft nun sein, da Livvy nicht mehr da ist?

Ty reagiert in einer etwas unerwarteten Art und Weise am Anfang des dritten Buchs und Kit ist darüber sehr überrascht. Kit ist für Ty da, er möchte für ihn da sein und möchte ihn während der Trauerphase unterstützen, aber diese Trauer stellt sich in einer unerwarteten Form dar und Kit weiß nicht, was er tun soll. Er klammert sich an Ty wie eine Klette und es ist eine schwierige Reise für Kit, weil er denkt, ‚Ich muss für diese Person da sein, egal was ist‘, aber das wird dann immer komplizierter, je weiter die Geschichte voranschreitet. Er beginnt zu denken, dass es vielleicht nicht das richtige ist, vielleicht sollte er Ty als verantwortungsvoller Freund lieber stoppen. Ty ist die eine Person auf der Welt, die ihm am meisten bedeutet. Sein Vater ist tot, er hat Livvy verloren, die ihm eine gute Freundin war, und er hat Ty, für den er so ziemlich alles tun würde. Also haben wir diesen interessanten Handlungsstrang mit diesen zwei Figuren, die so ein bisschen auf einem Kollisionskurs sind. Allerdings will ich noch eine Sache sagen, die die Leser bestimmt mögen werden: die beiden beziehen Dru mehr in ihre Freundschaft ein. Sie wird Livvy niemals ersetzen können, aber sie tritt hervor, um Teil ihrer Freundschaft zu werden.

Also schlägt ihre Freundschaft die Brücke zu „The Wicked Powers“ [Cassies fünfte und letzte Buchreihe, die an „Die Dunklen Mächte“ anschließen wird]?

Ja, in „The Wicked Powers“ haben wir eine viel engere Beziehung zwischen Dru und Ty, was meiner Meinung nach normal ist, da der Unterschied bei Geschwistern, die 16 und 13 sind, enorm ist, aber bei Neunzig- und Dreiundneunzigjährigen gar nicht mehr. Ihre Beziehung durchläuft eine Entwicklung, sie wachsen enger zusammen und der Altersunterschied ist dann nicht mehr so wichtig, wenn wir in „The Wicked Powers“ angelangt sind. Sie sind dann mehr wie Freunde und Ty denkt nicht mehr, ‚Sie ist nur meine kleine Schwester.‘

Das ist gut!
Ich kann die Kohorte einfach nicht nicht erwähnen und nach ihr fragen. Sie ist offensichtlich ein Spiegelbild der US-amerikanischen Politik gegen die viele Menschen nun ‚ankämpfen‘. Viele amerikanische Autoren tweeten über den Präsidenten und über das, was vor sich geht. Können wir in „Queen of Air and Darkness“ damit rechnen, dass sich mehr Schattenjäger gegen die Kohorte stellen werden oder wird die Kohorte nur noch schlimmer und schlimmer?

Was am Ende von „Lord of Shadows“ passiert, gibt der Kohorte unglücklicherweise Macht. Sie hatte Desaster durch die Schattenweltler vorausgesagt und so verdreht sie nun, was passiert ist. Wir haben Robert als Inquisitor verloren und Horace Dearborn wird seinen Platz einnehmen. Also haben wir nun jemanden aus der Kohorte, der im Zentrum der Macht ist. Wir werden die Verbindungen zwischen Dingen aus der realen Welt sehen, wenn der Rat hart gegen die Schattenweltler vorgeht und neue, nachteilige Gesetze erschafft, die die Bewegungs- bzw. Reisefreiheit der Schattenweltler einschränkt. Weil das nun mal das Erste ist, was man tut. Man versucht, den Überblick über seine Feinde und vermeintliche Bedrohungen zu behalten. Der nächste Schritt ist, dass der Rat entscheidet, Alicante und Idris von Schattenweltlern zu befreien. Eine Schattenweltler-freie Zone.

Das wird aber schwierig werden wegen der ganzen Werwölfe in den Wäldern…

Ich weiß! Eine Menge von Schattenweltlern leben in Idris, aber die Schattenjäger kümmert das nicht. Diese Dinge wurden schon von je her Gruppen von Menschen angetan, also entscheiden die Mächtigen, dass die Schattenweltler eine unerwünschte Gruppe ist, die sie hinaustreiben wollen. Wir haben einen gespaltenen Rat. Ein Teil des Rates stimmt der Kohorte zu und der andere stellt sich gegen sie. Wir haben es mit einer öffentlich gespaltenen Regierung zu tun.

Wow, es wird sehr aufregend sein, dies im nächsten Jahr zu lesen! [Die englische Version von „Queen of Air and Darkness“ soll im Herbst 2018 erscheinen.]

Kannst du uns erläutern, wie du für Diana, deine transgender Figur, recherchiert hast?

Natürlich! Zwei meiner besten Freunde sind Ärzte und einer von ihnen arbeitet sehr eng mit der Leiterin einer Transgender-Klinik in Western Massachusetts. Er hat den Kontakt zu ihr hergestellt, als ich anfing Diana zu erschaffen und die Leiterin wiederrum den Kontakt mit mehreren Transfrauen. Ich habe mich sechs Monate lang mit ihnen in verschiedenen Cafés oder an Orten in der Nähe meines Hauses getroffen. Es war kompliziert, weil ich sie erst mit den Büchern vertraut machen musste. Das war noch vor „Lady Midnight“, also habe ich ihnen „Die Chroniken des Magnus Bane“ und ein oder zwei „Chroniken der Unterwelt“ Bücher gegeben, um ihnen zu erklären, wie die Welt ist, wie sie funktioniert und wie Diana sich in ihr entwickelt. Ich habe ihnen dargestellt, wie ich mir Dianas Entwicklung vorstelle und dann haben sie mir geholfen, ein paar Dinge zu ändern, die ich ihrer Meinung nach falsch gemacht hatte. Es war die Idee der Frauen, dass Diana all die medizinischen Maßnahmen nicht in den USA, sondern in Thailand bekommen würde, weil es dort sehr verbreitet ist. Diana nach Thailand zu schicken war definitiv ihre Idee.
Wir haben viel über die Therapie und Selbsthilfegruppen gesprochen; was sie brauchen würde, während sie diese Angleichung durchmacht, was es für Schwierigkeiten geben würde, aber auch was es für gute Seiten hätte. Ich habe sehr viele Informationen von den Frauen bekommen.
Es ist ein so wesentlicher Bestandteil einer Person, also war es etwas, dass ich auf keinen Fall tun wollte, ohne mit Menschen, die dies erlebt haben, zu sprechen. Ich hatte ein paar Trans* Leser, die mir schrieben und mit denen ich Ideen ausgetauscht habe. Ich wollte natürlich nicht die Handlung verraten, also fragte ich ‚Wie wäre es hiermit oder damit?‘
Die schwierigste Sache war tatsächlich, mit der Idee zu arbeiten, dass der Rat Diana nicht ablehnt, weil sie Trans* ist, er lehnt sie ab, weil sie irdische Medizin genommen hat. Wenn es ihr möglich gewesen wäre, zum Rat zu gehen und zu sagen, dass sie Trans* sei, dann hätte sie diese Entscheidung nicht treffen müssen. Wir haben das diskutiert und uns gefragt, wie wir das regeln. Was bedeutet das? Ist der Rat transphobisch oder ist es eher so, dass er die Existenz von Trans*Menschen nicht anerkennt, genauso wie er nicht anerkennt, dass es neurodivergente Schattenjäger gibt?
Als ich dann mit dem Buch fertig war, hat Anya DeNiro es gelesen. Anya ist eine Transfrau, Autorin und eine Freundin meiner Freundin Kelly Link. Kelly fragte sie, ob sie bereit wäre, das Buch zu lesen und mir Feedback zu geben und Anya stimmte zu. Also las sie das Buch und gab mir gute Ratschläge.
Es ist interessant, weil man nicht einfach die Geschichte einer erfundenen Person erzählt, sondern man auch ein Kunstwerk erschafft und eine Geschichte entwirft, in der Teile dieser Geschichte Zustimmung [beim Leser] finden und man sichergehen will, dass diese auch so ist, wie man es beabsichtigt hatte.
Anya hat mir sehr geholfen. Offensichtlich sind alle Fehler mir zuzuschreiben und nicht den Lesern, die das Buch vorabgelesen haben. Es war wunderbar, mit all diesen Frauen zu arbeiten und ihr gemeinsames Wissen war sehr hilfreich.

Ich habe dir ja bereits erzählt, dass die Stelle, in der sie sich Gwyn offenbart, eine meiner Lieblingsstellen in „Lord of Shadows“ ist. Ich konnte sehen, wie sehr sie mit allem gekämpft hat und wie erleichtert sie war, als sie sich endlich jemanden anvertrauen konnte.

Ich wollte wirklich, dass Gwyn so reagiert, wie man es sich wünscht. Ich habe mir sehr viele interessante YouTube Videos angeschaut, in denen Transfrauen darüber sprechen, wie sie sich ihren Freunden oder Freundinnen gegenüber outeten und wie diese darauf reagierten. Ich habe vierzig bis fünfzig solcher Videos gesehen und mich dann noch mit Elyse, die eine der Frauen war, mit denen ich Zuhause gearbeitet habe, darüber unterhalten und gefragt: ‚Wie möchtest du, dass jemand reagiert? Was sollen sie deiner Meinung nach sagen?‘
Ich fand es wirklich gut, weil es mich davor bewahrt hat, gewisse Klischee-Antworten wie ‚Das ist in Ordnung für mich!‘ nicht zu benutzen. Weil es einfach nicht darum geht, ob es für dich in Ordnung ist oder nicht! Das ist nicht der Punkt. Der Punkt ist, anzuerkennen, dass die Person gewisse Dinge durchgestanden hat, dass sie wahrscheinlich von anderen Leuten verletzt wurde und dass du, komme was wolle, für diese Person da bist. Es geht nicht um dich.

Natürlich.
Ich mache nun eine 180 Gradwende. Dies ist eine Frage von Twitter: was ist dein wertvollster Ratschlag für einen aufstrebenden Schreiber, der aber Probleme hat, seine interessanten Ideen in ein Buch umzusetzen?

Das Beste, das du tun kannst, wenn du deine Ideen nicht in ein Buch umsetzen kannst, ist dir eine Gliederung zu erstellen, weil du nämlich Probleme mit der Struktur hast. Ganz einfach gesagt: in der Gliederung erzählst du dir die Geschichte, ohne Dialog, ohne irgendwelche beschreibenden Passagen. Du setzt dich einfach hin und sagst dir: „Das passiert, dann das, dann das…“
Du schreibst alles auf und dann versuchst du es in Abschnitte zu unterteilen. Es macht nicht sehr viel Spaß, aber es ist extrem hilfreich, denn ein großer Teil beim Schreiben besteht aus Strukturieren.

Ok, Gliederungen sind also genau dein Ding und andere sollten sie auch erstellen.

Wenn du Probleme hast, deine Ideen in eine Form zu bekommen.

Du hast erst vor kurzem deine neuen Kurzgeschichten [„Ghosts of the Shadow Market“] mit vielen verschiedenen Autoren angekündigt. Ein paar kennen wir und es ist auch ein Neuling dabei – Kelly Link. Wie bist du auf die Idee für diese Kurzgeschichten gekommen und was können deine Fans erwarten? Kannst du uns vielleicht ein kleines bisschen verraten?

So wie immer kam mir die Idee, als ich mit meinen Freunden zusammen war. Wir waren in Italien und haben darüber gesprochen, wie viel Spaß wir mit den „Chroniken des Magnus Bane“ und „Legenden der Schattenjäger-Akademie“ hatten, weil die Autoren der beiden Reihen dort waren. Und Kelly Link hat sich beschwert, dass wir sie nie zu einer der Geschichten eingeladen haben, was daran liegt, dass Kelly sehr berühmt und wichtig ist und es mir einfach nicht in den Sinn kam, sie zu fragen. Ich nahm an, sie würde wichtigere Dinge zu tun haben. Sie hat dann gefragt, wie alles ablief und ich sagte, wir wollten schon seit langer Zeit neue Geschichte schreiben, aber Sarah [Rees Brennan] war krank und niemand wollte es ohne sie machen. Wir waren nicht daran interessiert, solange Sarah nicht gesund oder bereit dazu war, wir wollten es nicht ohne ihre Mitwirkung machen. Aber dann hat sie gesagt, „Ich bin wieder gesund, ich habe Lust, ich will es wirklich machen!“ Wir haben dann über ein paar Ideen gesprochen und ich glaube, es war Robin [Wassermann], die sagte, der Schattenmarkt sei ihre liebste neue Erfindung in „Die Dunklen Mächte“. Ich liebe den Schattenmarkt, er ist einfach ein interessanter Ort. Wir haben uns dann dazu entschlossen, dass wir über den Schattenmarkt über mehrere Jahrhunderte hinweg und an unterschiedlichen Orten in Verbindung mit den Geschichten anderer Schattenjäger schreiben würden. Jem wäre die ideale Figur dafür, weil er ein Bruder der Stille ist, der in viele Geheimnisse eingeweiht ist. Es ist in Ordnung, dass er sich auf dem Schattenmarkt aufhält. Und er hat gute Gründe, ein Teil des Lebens der Schattenjäger zu sein, weil Brüder der Stille Ärzte, Therapeuten, Bibliothekare usw. in der Schattenjäger-Gesellschaft sind. Wir waren dann alle sehr aufgeregt und fingen an, die einzelnen Handlungen zu planen. Die Geschichten sind grundsätzlich chronologisch, aber die allererste Geschichte wird es nicht sein. In dieser Geschichte erfährt man, wie der kleine Jace zum ersten Mal nach New York kommt und dort auf den kleinen Alec und die kleine Isabelle trifft. Es ist wirklich niedlich und wir dachten, es würde Spaß machen, dort zu beginnen.

Das hört sich brillant an. Ich kann es kaum erwarten!
Dies ist eine Frage für deine deutschen Leser. Stell dir vor, du würdest hier in Deutschland Urlaub machen, was würdest du dir unbedingt ansehen wollen, was würdest du besuchen wollen?

Ich würde mir gerne die Burgen und Schlösser ansehen. Im Schwarzwald…? Ich habe Fotos gesehen, aber ich war noch nie dort, also würde ich das gerne machen.

Ja, wir haben viele schöne Burgen und Schlösser. Nicht nur z.B. Neuschwanstein…

Das ist das bekannteste!

Das stimmt, aber wir haben so viele mehr und sie sind alle toll!

Ich würde eine Rundreise machen und von Ort zu Ort reisen.

Wir haben noch Zeit für eine Frage: du arbeitest mit Cassandra Jean gerade an zwei verschiedenen Projekten…

(Cassie lacht.) Wir sind immer am Arbeiten!

Ihr arbeitet an den Märchenfiguren…?

Ja, wir arbeiten an den Märchenfiguren.

Ich denke, es werden wahrscheinlich noch mehrere hinzukommen, sind es weitere Pärchen oder auch noch andere Figuren?

Es sind nicht nur Pärchen. Manchmal sind es Freunde und manchmal Familienmitglieder so wie Hänsel und Gretel. Es werden Pärchen und Freunde sein. Bei manchen Pärchen drehen wir das Geschlecht um, zum Beispiel bei Emma und Julian. Er ist Dornröschen und sie wird ihn retten. Wir möchten Dru und Tavvy gerne als Hänsel und Gretel darstellen. Ich denke, wir werden eine ganze Reihe von Märchenfiguren machen und ich freue mich schon sehr drauf. Es wird großen Spaß machen!

Und die andere Sache, die du auf Instagram geteilt hast. Die unterschiedlichen Figuren, die Bücher lesen?

Das ist eigentlich ein Poster. Es ist nur ein einziges Kunstwerk, aber es ist riesig! Es ist ein Poster für selbstständige Buchläden. Es ist eine riesige Nachbildung von Luke Garroways Buchladen und in jedem Fenster und draußen sind die ganzen Schattenjäger aus all den Buchreihen, die ihre Lieblingsbücher lesen. Man sieht wie Ty „Sherlock Holmes“ liest, Magnus liest das „Weiße Buch“, Tessa liest Will und Jem „Eine Geschichte aus zwei Städten“ vor. Ich glaube, Julian liest Tavvy und Dru Märchen vor. Es ist wirklich bezaubernd und eine kostenlose Sache, die Cassandra Jean und ich machen, die dazu dienen soll, Lust am Lesen zu erwecken und den selbstständigen Buchhändlern unsere Wertschätzung zu zeigen.

Thanks to Cassandra Clare’s German publisher Goldmann Verlag, I had the opportunity to interview Cassie in Cologne on October 16. In more than 20 minutes we chatted about Lord of Shadows, future book projects, her special research for The Dark Artifices and more. I had a lot of fun during the interview and would like to thank Cassie and Goldmann Verlag.

Although it’s been nearly six months now – Lord of Shadows spoilers ahead! 😉

Lord of Shadows has a very shocking ending with some very unexpected deaths, how hard was it to develop a character, fully knowing that they were created to die and did writing them differ from writing other characters who are still alive?

I don’t think that creating Livvy was enormously different than creating a character that I knew was going to survive the whole series. You always have to say goodbye to your characters at some point so it’s really a question of when and at what point you say goodbye to them. With Livvy I said goodbye to her earlier than people were expecting and earlier than I’m saying goodbye to Ty or Diana or Kit or Emma. But she still had to be a fully developed character, she was allowed to be somebody who had things that she wanted, had goals and dreams. She still had to do fun things and things that were unexpected. I hope she was a fully rounded character that people cared about because the last thing you want is for people to say ‘Oh, I knew this character was going to die because they weren’t very interesting, they weren’t well developed.’ I didn’t want that to be the case with Livvy so from the beginning she was developed the same way all of the other characters were.

I really loved her and I’m still sad.

She was a sweetie.

She really was. I can imagine that writing her death and Robert’s death was probably a big challenge, were there any other really big challenges when you wrote Lord of Shadows?

Every new book represents a set of new challenges. I think for me writing Julian is definitely a challenge. He’s a very different kind of hero than Will was or Jace was. He’s definitely got a real potential for darkness and yet at the same time he also has been more of a caretaker and done more for other people than Will or Jace has when we first meet them. So he has this interesting duality of being someone who sacrificed a huge amount of his life for other people yet because he did that and because he had to do it so young, he’s become someone who’s extremely single-minded. This huge sacrifice can’t be for nothing and he’s willing to do literally anything to protect these children and his family. And that literally anything, I think now at this juncture we’re all worried about how far that is going to take him.

Oh yes, we really are worried.

(Cassie laughs.) Right? Because we’re like ‘What could he not do?’

Yeah, I mean he does know someone who says that they could break the parabatai bond.

And he finds out how to do it in Queen of Air and Darkness, so he does learn how you do it.

Oh my God.

Yeah, he’s not uninterested.

The parabatai/forbidden love story arc is probably the most popular one in The Dark Artifices and I really enjoyed it, but I also really love Kit, Ty and Livvy’s friendship. How different is this friendship going to be now that they have lost Livvy?

Ty reacts in a somewhat unexpected way in the beginning of the third book and Kit is very surprised. Kit is there for Ty, he wants to be there for him and wants to be there for his grieving, but the grieving takes an unexpected form and Kit doesn’t really know what to do. He sticks to Ty like a limpet and it’s a difficult journey for Kit because he’s thinking ‘I need to be there for this person no matter what’ and then no matter what becomes more and more complicated as the book goes on. He starts to think that maybe that’s not the right thing to do, maybe actually stopping him is what I should do as a responsible friend. (Cassie did air quotes when she used the word friend) Ty is the person in the world who means the most to him. His father’s dead, he lost Livvy, who was his other good friend, and he’s got Ty and he’d pretty much do anything for him. So you have this interesting story line with these two people where they are a bit on a collision course. But one thing that I will say that people will probably like is that they pull Dru into their relationship more. She can never replace Livvy, but she steps up to become part of their friendship.

So their friendship is then foreshadowing The Wicked Powers?

I would say so because in The Wicked Powers you have a much more close relationship with Dru and Ty, which I think is normal because with siblings the difference between sixteen and thirteen is huge, but the difference between ninety-three and ninety is nothing. It’s a progression of growing to be closer and the age difference making less of a difference, so by the time we’re in The Wicked Powers and because of birthdays, Ty is like eighteen and Dru is sixteen so they’re not that far apart anymore. They are more friends on the same level than when Ty thought ‘Oh, she’s just my little sister.’

I cannot not mention the Cohort and ask about it. It’s obviously a reflection of the US-American politics and many people now fight against it, authors tweet about the president and everything that has been going on. In Queen of Air and Darkness, can we expect more Shadowhunters to rise up against the Cohort or will the Cohort only get worse and worse – if that’s not too much of a spoiler?

What happens at the end of Lord of Shadows unfortunately gives the Cohort power. They were predicting disaster at the hands of Downworlders and that’s how they spin what happens. So now that we have lost Robert as the Inquisitor and Horace Dearborn takes his place, which I don’t think is a spoiler, now someone in the Cohort is in the very heart of power. We will see echoes of the real world as the Clave starts to crack down on Downworlders and create new, prejudicial laws that restrict their movements and their travel. Because that’s the first thing you do, you try to keep track of where your enemies and perceived threats are. The next step they take is to decide that they want to make Alicante and Idris Downworlder-free. A Downworlder-free zone.

This will be difficult because of the werewolves in the forests…

I know! There are plenty of Downworlders living in Idris, but they don’t care. This has been done to groups of people throughout history. The powers that be decide that Downworlders are an undesirable group that they want to drive out. What you have is a splintered Clave. The Clave that wants to go along with the Cohort and the Clave that opposes them. We’re looking at a more openly splintered government.

Wow, this will be exciting to read next year!
Can you explain your research process for Diana, your transgender character?

Sure! Two of my best friends are doctors and one of them works very closely with the head of a transgender program/clinic in Western Massachusetts. He put her in touch with me when I started creating Diana, she put me in touch with several trans women and over six months I would meet with them in different coffee shops and in places near my home. It was complicated because first I had to familiarize them with the books. This was before Lady Midnight so I gave them The Bane Chronicles and I gave them one or two of The Mortal Instruments to try to say, ‘This is the world, this is how it works so within this fantasy world there is this character, so how might she evolve?’ I sketched out what I thought was Diana’s character arc and then they helped me fix things that they felt I had gotten wrong. It was their idea that Diana would get her medical transition stuff done in Thailand because that’s very common, and not in the US. Having Diana in Thailand was definitely their idea. We talked a lot about the kind of therapy and groups and what she would need while she was going through her transition, the difficulties of going through transition and also the good things about it. Just an enormous amount of information. It’s such an integral part of a person so it was definitely something where I didn’t want to do it without talking to people who had experienced it. They were extremely helpful. I had a couple of trans readers who wrote to me and I bounced some questions and ideas off them, but I didn’t want to ruin the plot so I was like, ‘How about this and that?’
I think the hardest thing was in fact working with the idea that the Clave is not rejecting Diana because she is trans, they are rejecting her because she used mundane medicine. But had she been able to go to them and say that she was trans in the first place, she wouldn’t have had to make that choice. We went through that, how to balance that. What does that mean? Is the Clave transphobic or is it more like they just don’t acknowledge that there are trans people in the world, in the same way that they don’t acknowledge that there are neurodivergent Shadowhunters?
Then after I had finished the book, Anya DeNiro read it. Anya is a trans woman, a writer, and a friend of my friend Kelly Link. Kelly asked her if she’d be willing to read my book and give feedback on it, and she was, so she went through it and gave me really interesting notes.
It’s interesting because you’re not just telling a story of an invented person, you are also making a work of art and you’re also creating a story where the pieces of the story have resonances and you want to make sure that the resonances are all the ones that you intended.
Anya was really helpful. Obviously, all mistakes are mine and anything I got wrong is my fault, not the fault of my early readers. It was wonderful to work with these women and to have the combined assistance of their wisdom.

You already know this, but the part where she revealed her story to Gwyn was one of my favorite parts in Lord of Shadows. I could see how much she struggled with everything and how relieved she was to finally reveal herself to someone.

I really wanted him to react the way you want someone to react. I actually watched a lot of videos on YouTube, which I find very interesting, in which trans women talk about coming out to their boyfriends or girlfriends as trans and their reaction. Watching forty or fifty of these and then also talking to Elyse, who was one of the women who I was working with at home on Diana, I kept saying, ‘How would you want someone to react? What would you want them to say?’ I thought it was good because it warned me away from some basic clichés where people say things like, ‘Well, that’s okay with me!’ Because it doesn’t matter whether it’s okay with you or not! That’s not the point. The point is to acknowledge that the other person has been through something, that they’ve been probably hurt by other people, that you want to be there for them no matter what. It’s not about you.

I’m doing a 180 now. This is a question from Twitter and one of our followers wanted to know your most valuable piece of advice for an aspiring writer with interesting ideas, but who struggles to transform them into a book.

I think if the problem you’re having is transforming your ideas into a book then the best thing you can do is create an outline, because you’re having problems with structure. In its very simplest form an outline is you telling yourself the story without any dialogue, any descriptive passages. It’s just you sitting down and saying, ‘This happens and this happens and then this happens…’
You write all that down and then you try to break it down into sections. It doesn’t sound like the most fun, but it’s extremely helpful and a lot of writing is structure.

Okay. So outlining is your thing and others should really do lots of outlining.

If you are having a problem with getting your ideas into a form.

You just announced your new short stories [Ghosts of the Shadow Market] with lots of different authors, some of whom we do know and a new one, Kelly Link. How did you get the idea for these new short stories and what can fans expect? Maybe you can give us a little teaser?

As always, I got this idea when I was with my friends. We were in Italy together and we talked about how much fun we had with The Bane Chronicles and with Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy because all of the authors for Shadowhunter Academy were there, all the authors for The Bane Chronicles were there. And Kelly was complaining that we never invited her to do any stories, which is because Kelly is very famous and important and it would never occur to me to invite her. I assumed she was doing more important things. So she started to ask questions about how it worked and I was saying that we’d been wanting to do another one for a long time, but Sarah had been ill and none of us wanted to do it without her. We weren’t interested in doing it if Sarah was not well or up for it, we didn’t want to do it without her involved. But she was saying, ‘I’m well now, I’m up for it. I really wanna do it!’ And we had a couple of different ideas we started to bounce around. I think it was Robin who said, ‘One of my favorite new inventions from Dark Artifices is the Shadow Market.’ I really love the Shadow Market, it’s such a fun thing. Basically, we decided what we would want to do. We’d do the Shadow Market throughout time and in different places, crisscrossing the stories of other Shadowhunters, and Jem would be the perfect character for that because he’s a Silent Brother, he’s privy to all these secrets. It’s okay for him to be in the Shadow Market, and there are reasons he has to be involved in everybody’s lives, as Silent Brothers are the doctors, the therapists, the librarians (and so on) in Shadowhunter society. Then we all got really excited and once we all get really excited, we start generating stories. I think I can say that the stories are basically in chronological order, but the first story that is going to released is not in chronological order, it’s actually out of order. It’s the story of what happens when Jace first arrives in New York and little Jace meets little Alec and little Isabelle. It’s just really cute and we thought that it’d be fun to start there.

This sounds brilliant, I can’t wait!

I think it’ll be fun.

This question is for your German readers: if you were here in Germany on vacation, what’s something that you’d really want to see or visit?

It’s really dorky, but I’d like to see the castles. In the Black Forest…? I’ve seen pictures but I’ve never gone so I’d like to see the castles.

Yeah, we do have lots of beautiful castles. Not only Neuschwanstein…

That’s the most famous one!

It is, but we have so many more and they are beautiful!

I would do a castle trip. I’d go from castle to castle.

(We both laugh.)

We’ve got time for one more question: you’re working with Cassandra Jean on two new projects, I think.

(Cassie laughs.) We’re always doing so much stuff!

You’re doing the fairy tale characters…?

Yes, we’re doing the fairy tale characters.

I think there are probably more to come, more couples or is it not only couples?

It’s not only couples. Sometimes it’s friends, sometimes it’s family like Hänsel and Gretel. It’ll be couples and friends. We’re going to gender flip some of the couples like we want to do a gender-flipped Emma and Julian where he’s Sleeping Beauty and she’s saving him. We’d like to do maybe a Dru and Tavvy Hänsel and Gretel. I think we’re going to do a range and I’m really looking forward to it! It’s really fun!

And the other thing you posted on your Instagram with the different characters reading books?

That’s actually a poster. It’s just one piece of art, but it’s huge! It’s a poster that’s for independent bookstores. It’s a huuuge reproduction of Luke Garroway’s bookstore. And in every window and outside are all the Shadowhunters from all the different series reading their favorite books. You can see Ty reading Sherlock Holmes, Magnus is reading The Book of the White, Tessa is reading Tale of Two Cities to Will and Jem. I think Julian is reading fairy tale stories to Tavvy and Dru. It’s just really adorable and it’s a free thing that Cassandra Jean and I are doing that’s meant to inspire literacy and show our appreciation for independent booksellers.

I love that. That sounds absolutely perfect!
