Cassandra Clare shares first excerpt from ‘Ghosts of the Shadow Market’
The first installment of Cassandra Clare’s new short stories collection Ghosts of the Shadow Market won’t be released until April 2018, but Cassie nevertheless posted an excerpt from Son of the Dawn on her Instagram. During our interview with her, she shared that
the stories are basically in chronological order, but the first story that is going to released is not in chronological order, it’s actually out of order. It’s the story of what happens when Jace first arrives in New York and little Jace meets little Alec and little Isabelle. It’s just really cute and we thought that it’d be fun to start there.
In this first excerpt we can now see the trio as pre-teens for the very first time and it’s giving us all the feels!
Aww! Jace acting like a brave little soldier is breaking our hearts.
Thanks to Cassie’s newsletter we do have a synopsis for these ten new short stories:
The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks and vampires. There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones, the very heart of the Shadowhunters. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. But once he was a Shadowhunter called Jem Carstairs, and his love, then and always, is the warlock Tessa Gray.
Follow Brother Zachariah and see, against the backdrop of the Shadow Market’s dark dealings and festive celebrations, Anna Lightwood’s first romance, Matthew Fairchild’s great sin and Tessa Gray plunged into a world war. Valentine Morgenstern buys a soul at the Market and a young Jace Wayland’s soul finds safe harbor. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Not even Brother Zachariah.
Son of the Dawn is going to be published in April 2018 as a self-published ebook, but “[t]hey [all the short stories] will be published in print form by a traditional publisher, but that will be after the first TEC book.” The first The Eldest Curses book – The Red Scrolls of Magic – is going to be published on March 5, 2019.
We can’t wait for Son of the Dawn!

I can’t wait for this!!! Jem is a favorite character and I love having glimpses of our favorite characters outside their ‘main’ storylines. This collection was a totally unexpected treat (when announced) and will tide us over until QAaD. Squee!!!
