Cover Reveal: ‘The Red Scrolls of Magic’ by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu

Malec shippers, today is your day because the cover of Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu’s The Red Scrolls of Magic was just revealed online on EW.com!
It’s been more than two years since Entertainment Weekly announced that Cassie would publish an adult series focused on Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood and there have been a few changes since then. But let’s have a look at the cover first before I catch you up on what has happened and what we have learned:

I love it! It’s so great that the cover is blue (and purple) because it does remind me of Magnus’s magic. I also love that we’re seeing Alec with his trusted bow 🙂

Here’s what Cassie said about The Red Scrolls of Magic:

The Red Scrolls of Magic is a project very close to my heart,” she tells EW. “An essential part of the Mortal Instruments series is the love between Alec and Magnus, a reserved demon-hunter and a freewheeling warlock. I carved out a space for their first romantic vacation through Europe halfway through [Mortal Instruments] and always hoped I’d get a chance to revisit it. They went on that holiday having just gotten together, and return committed to living and dying for each other, so I knew something big had happened! This book is a first chance for fans of ‘Malec’ to see them not as part of an ensemble, but taking center stage. And it’s my chance to explore the development of both the characters and their relationship — their flaws and their triumphs.”

Let’s talk about what we know about The Red Scrolls of Magic so far:

  • The Red Scrolls of Magic is now going to be part of a YA trilogy so The Eldest Curses is just like The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices.
  • The synopsis:
“All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation—a lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter who against all odds is finally his boyfriend. But as soon as the pair settles in Paris, an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is bent on causing chaos around the world. A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke.
Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand and its elusive new leader before the cult can cause any more damage. As if it wasn’t bad enough that their romantic getaway has been sidetracked, demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. As their quest for answers becomes increasingly dire, Magnus and Alec will have to trust each other more than ever—even if it means revealing the secrets they’ve both been keeping.” (x)
  • The book is going to begin with an Arthur Schopenhauer quote: “To desire immortality is to desire the eternal perpetuation of a great mistake.”
  • The Red Scrolls of Magic is set during City of Fallen Angels when Magnus and Alec are on vacation in Europe.
  • Cassie recently described it as a rom-com.
  • Lots of characters from previous books are going to show up: Tessa, Raphael, Lily, Aline and Helen.
  • About Helen and Aline: “we’ll see Helen and Aline meet and fall in love in TEC.”

    😍😍😍 this cover 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

  3. Can’t wait for this book 😍😍 also – Magnus founding a cult as a joke 😂😂 amazing

  4. Anything about Magnus will be worth the read, along with a wonderful cover to evoke more interest!!

  5. It was always one of my biggest complaints about Malec, that so much of their relationship development occurred off-page. It was honestly one of the harder relationships for me to buy into initially because it felt like there was so much of an imbalance in the power dynamic (which Cassie has addressed and it feels more equal to me now after she explained some of Magnus’s insecurities). I’m so so so excited to read more about them falling in love and getting to know each other.
It was like here we have this couple in books 2 & 3 ‘kind of’ but also it’s largely a read between the lines relationship with the exception of a few moments. And then they’re both gone until halfway through CoFA and boom they’re all in, but then Alec starts doubting things with Magnus/his past pretty early in CLS and the relationship feels unequal again. Then they spend all of CoHF broken up and miserable. I loved the extra Malec stories in The Bane Chronicles (major hearts for their first date) and TotSA. I just want to see them both happy and working through their stuff in TEC.

Also, deeply jealous Cat that you’ve already gotten to read it!
