Cassandra Clare on ‘City of Ashes’ movie: ‘It ratchets up the stakes’

City of Ashes

Cassandra Clare spoke with MTV about The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, which is set to begin filming sometime next year. Clare said that the sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones “ratchets up the stakes.”

“Simon (Robert Sheehan) is turned into a vampire,” Clare teases, “And he goes from being this human who’s Clary’s friend to this ravenous undead thing.” Clare adds that she pushed for Sheehan in the role, with early discussions about his casting centering on how right he’d look stalking the night and sucking blood. “Robbie was actually my idea,” she says. “I saw him in ‘Misfits,’ which is a big comedy hit in Britain, and he’s just so good and yet also able to be heartbreaking and I thought he’ll be great and he will enjoy the hell out of being a vampire.”

What else can fans expect from “City of Ashes?” Well, Sigourney Weaver is joining the series as the Inquisitor. Describing the previously-announced casting, Clare says the character is “This badass, scary lady” that fans can expect to enjoy. Although she’s sworn to secrecy about any other details for the adaptation, Clare says there’s a massive battle on the deck of a warship capping the second story that she’s excited to see onscreen.

Head to MTV for the full interview, which includes talk of City of Bones and the one thing she missed in the first movie.

We spoke to Clare to talk about the upcoming DVD release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, including what went wrong with the initial City of Ashes script. Stay tuned for that and talk of City of Heavenly Fire and City of Bones special features beginning this Friday.

*whispers* the most succesful book-to-movie adaptations in the last couple of years have been Hunger Games and Catching Fire and thEY CHANGED ALMOST NOTHING WAKE UP HOLLYWOOD (oh and harry potter. even the dreaded twilight)

    • Thats what im hoping too i still havent seen catching fire yet but i heard so many good things. If those movies can get better with every sequel who’s to say we can’t do the same we deserve a chance we just need to be on the right track and just simply STICK TO THE BOOK that’s all it takes

    • The problem is, HG is way more popular than MI, has much more critical acclaim (TMI has a negative reputation actually), and appeals to a much wider audience.

  7. I can’t wait! I just hope it isn’t a long wait till the next move

  8. I think the movie was great. I look forward to seeing future movies that go with the rest of the books. Im looking forward to see city of ashes. Please stick to the book though.

Let’s try to make the moments between jace and clary more fluid and natural this time guys! That kiss scene in the greenhouse was terrible with the loud music and shit. God I cringe when I think of it. It was meant to be subtle and beautiful.

  10. Please don’t mess up the second movie just look at hunger games was messed up but they made it super good in catching fire because they stuck to the book so please read the book carefully and try to make it like that I know they can’t put every single detail but at least keep all the major scenes in and correctly

  11. Please keep me up to date on the next movie City of Ashes I can’t wait!!

I REALLY, REALLY want to see City of Ashes made into a movie. I’ve watched the movie a billion of times. I’m a HUGE fan. I only got into TMI a few months ago, but I fell in love with this story. I loved BOTH the movie and book. Jamie (Jace) did an amazing job. I can see how much emotion he put into the movie. ANDDDD the way he looks at Clary makes my heart melt. I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE on the internet to see if the second one will be made… I can’t find anything. Please, if anyone knows ANYTHING, tell me. I need to know a date for when it will start filming or even better WHEN IT WILL HIT THEATERS.

TMI is my fandom. Please don’t let me down.
